I regret to inform you all that our book is no longer available for pre-order… because today is the official release date!!
This book means so much to
@joelasievert
and me, and we really hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed writing it.
Unpopular opinion: the best thing young people can do early in their careers is adopt a dog. Then another one mid career. Then two more late career. Four more in retirement. Success is measured by the number of dogs you pet.
Since political science doesn’t really publish null results, I wonder how much time/energy/money has been wasted on people independently studying the same/similar ideas only to learn the same lesson. I would love to see the Journal of Don’t Bother We Already Tried That
One cool thing about imposter syndrome is how you don’t feel better when your work gets published in a good journal. Instead, you just question whether or not the journal is really any good.
I am genuinely over the moon to officially share that I will be joining the faculty at the University of Wyoming this fall! I’m so thankful for the memories and friendships I’ve made at Auburn and R Street, but this move is a dream come true for me. I can’t wait to get started!
Just received this review: “I have truly enjoyed reading this paper: it is well written, the exposition is good, and the story is coherent and makes sense. In fact, this is the best paper I have received to review this year. Thank you for all this effort.” This calls for pie!
How do I start a professional award to reward the nicest people in political science? That feels like behavior we should be encouraging and celebrating more often.
I’ve got a few copies of our book I would love to give away. Feel free to reach out if you’re interested. Preference will be given to grad students and non-TT folks, but otherwise it’s first come, first served.
My diploma has a significant void where it should say “political science” so I like to award myself new specialties sometimes. Here’s my degree de jour.
I have never been a morning person, but getting to wake up in time to see everything bathed in pink like this is an extremely strong incentive for me to change that.
Drafted my dream acknowledgments section of the book while on a layover like I’m Michael Jordan giving his Hall of Fame acceptance speech. Can’t decide if I actually want to put it in there though.
I’m so incredibly flattered and honored to be the recipient of the University’s Promoting Intellectual Engagement teaching award. I’m even more so thankful for the students who went out of their way to make it happen for me, and the comments they submitted have me in stitches.
Today I reached the (extremely arbitrary) milestone of 100 citations on Google scholar. This seems like the perfect opportunity to treat myself nonetheless.
Without a doubt, the most exciting and rewarding thing I’ve ever done was author S Res 463 in the 115th Congress (and explain the difference between an amendment and a standing order over and over again). Every time I see a baby on the floor now it fills me with so much joy.
Just had a cabbie lecture me for about 30 minutes on the importance of studying politics. I didn’t have the heart to mention that there’s not much more I could be doing on that front.
My only experience with polisci rumors was having multiple people post about how I didn’t deserve getting the job I have now because they were so much better at both teaching and research. So I may be biased, but that site is hot garbage nonetheless.
Unsolicited life hack: make sure to check your email immediately after you wake up each day. That enables you to go ahead and ruin your own day before anyone else really has the chance to.
Today I inexplicably woke up at 5am and decided to just go ahead and start my day. And I absolutely devastated to report that you “morning people” might be on to something. Completely gutted.
I have a few that I really love, but given how many times it has led strangers to spontaneously sing Schoolhouse Rock at me, this one has to be my favorite.
The bad news: A huge tree fell so close to my parents’ house they couldn’t open their back door.
The good news: It miraculously didn’t do any damage to the house.
The great news: This provided me with an opportunity to use a chainsaw and buy a new axe.
One of my favorite projects on one of my favorite topics was recently accepted for publication. (My first solo, peer-reviewed piece!) I talk about the major findings in this blog post. Also, anyone interested in the full text should let me as I'd be happy to share!

! Interbranch Warfare: Senate Amending Process and Restrictive House Rules. Come for the analysis of over 125k amendments to 3000+ bills over 57 congresses, stay for the hot takes about reforming the Senate! A short thread 1/4
Ten years ago today I moved to Athens to start grad school. In retrospect, I really didn’t know what I was getting into, and it feels like a (not so small) miracle to be where I am today. I feel so fortunate. And kinda old.
I’ve been trying to hold back tears for hours. I feel so completely gutted and betrayed. It was the honor of a lifetime to work in the Senate. To see it sacked and defiled by these seditious insurrectionists is too much to stomach.
Zuzu had been lazier than usual. I chalked it up to aging but she has hypothyroidism. Thankfully it’s easy to treat and now she’s like a puppy again. We even played tug of war for the first time in a while tonight. It’s like we’ve been given more time together and I feel so lucky
I nearly froze my beard off on my walk home today (good thing that’s not actually possible). Even if it was, it would have been worth it. I just love the snow so much.
Come work with us!! Auburn is looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Election Administration, Policy, and Law to start this fall. Here's the link:

Fun fact that always bears repeating: Literally every state is still counting ballots right now. In fact, AZ and NV are actually further along than CA, OR, and WA. They just happen to be less competitive so most have stopped paying attention to them.
Today marks 4 years since I brought Zuzu home. She was found in a junkyard eating rocks, has moved to 4 different cities with me, and has had to spent a lot of time around me during the pandemic, but she’s still the sweetest dog ever. This was her only 5 hours after meeting me.
Our book is available for pre-order on Oxford's website! Plus, for every copy sold,
@joelasievert
will* post a video of himself dancing to a different 90s pop song!
"That's amazing!" the ghost of Teddy Roosevelt to Barack Obama after seeing this, probably
*very likely will not
While we’re sharing horror stories, I’ve had 3 papers take 40+ days to get desk rejected, I’ve had 3 papers take over a year to get a 1st round of reviews, and I once went through 5 rounds of reviews with different reviewers that asked us to undo what we’d done in earlier rounds
Today is my last day at
@RSI
. I loved the people and the work, and I'm so thankful for the support I've received as I get ready to begin work at Wyoming. To commemorate my time, here is a thread of some of my favorite things I've worked on as a governance fellow:
Instead of pleading the fifth whenever someone asks me something, I’ve started pleading any other amendment. It makes no sense and no one ever laughs. It’s absolute perfection.
Just got complimented on how I arranged my groceries on the conveyer belt at the store, which brought me more joy than I care to admit. This is also bad news though for my other neuroses that may not be as compliment-worthy.
I had such a wonderfully delightful and productive time at MPSA this year. Thank you to everyone who made that possible. Looking forward to the next one!
2020 is a nightmare and the election season is especially stressful. But my sisters and parents got to see me on tv, and excitedly said they were proud of me. So it turns out not everything is awful.
I don’t know why I check on my manuscripts regularly knowing full well that the options are (1) anxiety about the reviews not being complete and (2) anxiety about the reviews being complete. Here’s today’s surge of adrenaline that I will learn nothing from.
Every interaction is an opportunity to learn and grown or double down on being an asshole. Tenure is not a free pass for the latter. Thanks
@devon_cantwell
for helping us learn which camp some people choose to fall in to.

I’ll share a brief thread, but you can find the full paper here:
Final grades submitted! It may be 39 degrees outside but my summer has officially begun!
Thus concludes my first year at UW, and I have to say it was a remarkable one. I’m truly thankful for the students and colleagues who helped make it such a productive and enjoyable time.
