If this is the end of Twitter, I wanted to share the only art “trick” I know: how to draw evenly spaced things in perspective. Start with your perspective lines and your first two things, in this case lightposts 1/4🧵

I found out today, by watching the stream, that this is for the borderless foil Serialized Version of the card. Thanks to AD Dawn Murin for trusting me with the Mother of Machines!
I have been doing Magic illustrations since 2008. I didn't get a legendary character to illustrate until 2017. Since then I have been very fortunate to illustrate some major characters in MtG lore, but Urza, Planeswalker was highest-stakes commission I have ever painted /1 🧵
The Dungeons and Dragons Legend of Drizzt Visual Dictionary also features the Iconic Class paintings that I did in summer 2021. I painted 6 and Jason Rainville painted 6.

It is my 40th birthday today, and I thought I'd have new art to show but it looks like I was misinformed about the date. Maybe tomorrow! But here's an oldie:
Benalish Honor Guard
16x20 oil on canvas
Holy cow, how did I miss this? I just won my first ever award as a professional illustrator! Benalish Honor Guard won Silver in the Oil/Acrylic/Watercolor category! I can finally add 'award-winning' to my bio :)

A little process thread for the most difficult painting I've had to do. But first: Standing in back (L-R): Dantrag, Quenthel, the Illithid, Yvonnel, Triel, Jeggred. Seated (L-R): Bladen'kerst, Vendes. Standing in front (L-R): Gromph, Jaraxle 🧵
This is turning out to be D&D week!
Adventuring Party
24"x30" oil on canvas
AD: Nick Bartoletti
This is atypical of my usual compositions, which are usually character-centric. But this art had to be able to be cropped and zoomed for multiple purposes.
In honor of the new Secret Lair, I’m auctioning off this Artist Proof sketch with 100% proceeds going to
@TrevorProject
. It’s on the back of a signed Titanic Growth. Bid in the comments. Bidding ends May 3, 2022 at 5pm EST. High bid will be in the thread.
Tip for illustration students and young professionals in this new world: get ready to show your work/ your process in your portfolio. It's no longer enough to show the finished images.

Ranger of Eos got a little older, more experienced, and got me into Spectrum this year!

It's taken me a decade of professional work to get my

illustrations to a point where I'm proud of them. That's a lot of time, and I'm thankful for my wife and my ADs for sticking with me.

It was a blast to paint this character! The wonderful concept art team at WotC gets the credit for designing her look; I'm guessing Cynthia designed her?

It was such an honor to get the opportunity to paint Urza for this set. I still can't believe it.
As long as we are talking about age, I'm 37. Almost 38. I started painting for Magic when I was 25. I currently have 21 unreleased Magic paintings in my house and the worst one is better than my best Magic painting when I was 25. Not everyone starts out fully-formed!

I was busy signing cards so I didn't see this previewed! Looking forward to going back to Eldraine later in the summer.
Hey, PSA: Don’t tag me in En Ef Tee stuff. I don’t do them, never will do them. If Magic goes away forever tomorrow, I’ll do dog portraits for people instead. If you see my stuff in that realm, it’s fraudulent. End of story.
I have more to say about Linden's design, but for any adventurous cosplayers out there, here's some help. I figured if Linden's a knight of multiple kingdoms, she might have to be ready for action. Her dress is basically knight armor with a detachable collar and skirt.

On the topic of comparisons; Mayor of Avabruck (2011) and General Kudro (2020). Similar character, same model (my dad), and nine years of illustrating between them.

TIL that the Werewolves of Innistrad and the Vampires of Ixalan tend to develop similar hairlines, beards, and habits of brooding over maps.
Parallel evolution by

Probably the wildest thing I did at

was sign this card (yes on the card itself). My hands were shaking 😆 I saw two all weekend and signed the sleeve on the other one
Due to a variety of factors, I will not receive Artist Proofs of the serialized Elesh Norn card. This was different than the initial information I received from Wizards, and I apologize to the collectors and fans who were looking forward to the chance to collect the APs
