I help self-taught programmers like me overcome doubt and build their career | Author of The Imposter's Handbook, explorer, writer, annoyingly curious.
Hi I've been using JavaScript for 18 years and for the last 9 years every day, all the time. I can build just about anything in Nuxt and Vue and Node and today I spent 90 minutes trying to debug a scoping problem... I still fall for "this"....
It's finally done - The Little SQL Book! Weighing in at 70 pages, you'll assemble a fantasy football cheatsheet using actual 2019 NFL data... oh yeah and learn some SQL too. Have a look - it's *free*
So who’s the one person that you would leave Twitter for? They leave, you’re gone?
I think it would be
@shanselman
for me but don’t tell him I said that.
I just had a really good idea RE learning SQL. It involves turning 2020 NFL stats into Fantasy Football cheat sheets using SQLite. Seems like more fun than DVD rentals and YES I KNOW not everyone likes football
I'm thinking a 50 page PDF (free of course)... thoughts?
It's been a while... but we're back with Season 5 and yes, we're going to keep going with this.
This show features
@anjuan
and
@TheAprilEdwards
. Our thanks to them both!
I think this might be ready to go! SQL in Orbit - 2 hours of SQL and data science using the data from Cassini. Always wanted to learn SQL? Maybe PostgreSQL too? These videos might be for you:
Ohhhh I'm so excited... using some time off to put the polish on my next video release - a set of videos to complement my book "A Curious Moon". It's all about Postgres and basic data science stuff. If you'd like to test for me, let me know!
Oooohhhhh this looks like fun! Wish I had the time for

@livelovegeek
This will be a fun story in your long, wonderful career. Deep breath - you have friends who are always willing to help when you need. And you never know what tomorrow will bring :). If there's any way I can help just ask.
In honor of my wonderful standing in the .NET community as a bully and mean person, I would like to remind you that there's a free book on SQL in which I'm not mean at all. Learn SQL this weekend with real data!
“Don't have a computer science degree and feel like you should?”
EVERY. DAMN. DAY.
Great pitch from
@robconery
, and I love the design work here. Seems like required reading for me.
I feel like today is a historic inflection point. The thing that spawns The Next Thing. Someone out there will have bios written, starting with “it started on Blue Friday when a lot of people lost their jobs…”
If you're presenting on a Mac, one thing that's great to master is zooming in what you're trying to show people, as well as making sure your fonts are sized up.
You can zoom your screen based on your settings - be sure to turn them on and practice.
Don't know who needs to hear this but of all the discussions of "personal care" etc, I've found that cooking for myself is the most therapeutic thing I've ever done. Subbed to 5 or so "pro home cooks" on YouTube and have been so so so happy for lunch/dinner. It really helps.
Super excited to work on HyperMap, a hypermedia api for automapper using GraphQL bindings with the blockchain.
@jbogard
your a genus for coming up with this!
Having some fun with schedule data and Postgres today so I made a video. Unreal what Postgres can do with constraints - erasing hundreds of lines of code!
Hey friends who are alone for the holidays… I see you. It can be super tough, especially if you‘re finding yourself again after a long relationship/marriage.
Lean into it and make yourself a kickass dinner. Or take yourself out!
In JavaScript Math.max() will return the largest number given to it. If you don't give it any numbers, it returns -Infinity because that's the biggest number you didn't give it.
I dropped some stuff on the floor and said, out loud, "well done mate, a bit fucked now aren't we?"
I never realized it until that moment. My inner critic self-talk bully is Australian.
WTAF.
So I managed to turn
@Ghost
into an online course system (aka "LMS") by hacking my theme with Vue and plugging in
@supabase
. It's working pretty well and was surprisingly simple to do. Anyone interested in knowing more? /cc

Kids aren’t clay. They have their own agenda and yours is likely last on their list. Even if, in fact especially if, it makes no sense at all. Your kids aren’t you and an ego check is a good thing.
@KevinNaughtonJr
You know... the funny thing is my coding skills atrophied dramatically in the mid-2000s as I was using snippets and code libraries for everything. I was recording a video with
@ayende
and couldn't even write an inner join expression... I had completely forgotten!
I know a lot in the world is happening but I just wanted to drop a simple thing: some olive oil, salt and pepper on a sourdough slice with meat of choice and pickled onions/peppers (home made of course) is HEAVEN
Great question and interesting replies. I think there's a lot of confusion about hashing vs. encryption... which is great as it inspired me to make another video!
This one's for you

The first “big” travel I’ve done in 3 years and I’m ok. I’m really ok. I think it’s ok. Being careful, thoughtful, but poking my head out. The world is still there and it’s wonderful. I’m inflating a little… it’s ok…
So this is … weird. My sister Candy who passed in 2005 did hairstyles for Hollywood films and TV. Her first break was Mork and Mindy and my mom reminded me last week that “Mork came to dinner at our house” back in 1970-something.
That would be Robin Williams.
Been working with and EF for the first time in a long time. I keep fighting the urge to drop into SQL (it's Postgres) but I take a deep breath and read up on EF...
And then...
"Oh right... Copilot". It's unbelievable how right on the money this thing is.
I'm wondering how my DDD Cowboy Architect friends are gonna weather the daylight savings change... I mean... a time zone is a value object right? Immutable?
Seriously would be fun to see how your systems react to this... especially if it's nbd /cc Head Astronaut

Today I…
Woke up at 9 because my kids are off at college and I’m divorced.
Went for a walk in the sun when it wasn’t being eclipsed by the needy moon
Did final edit on my next YouTube video not generated by AI
What’s your excuse?
Like everyone, I have an "inner critic" that I struggle with. Sometimes a bully, other times condescendingly surprised when something I do goes well.
Today I realized that inner voice has an Australian accent. I'm 💯 serious. I realized it when I was making myself lunch...
I get asked about Tool and why I love them and when I get “I guess I don’t get angry music“ responses I say “listen to this song when you have a few minutes”. Only failed once.
"What's that noise...?"
"It's the sound of headcount springing from nowhere and hundreds of interview loops being assembled at once over the holidays..."
Perhaps the biggest contribution to home cooking has been the discovery of home-made pickled red onions. If you know, you know. 1 cup white vinegar, 1 cup water. 1 tbsp of salt and sugar. Boil, add two red onions in a mason jar and MY GOD
Oooohhhhh this looks like fun! Wish I had the time for

Hey .Net friends, what’s better: an EF query writing 10k records using 10k parameters in a big sql string or 10k threads writing one query? Assume transaction is not required and eventually consistent will work ok. Is there a third option here?
Hey .NET friends I was goofing around with "config stuff" the other day and whipped this up for fun. Does it look useful? I was inspired by Viper in Go land...
Goofing around with my old Take Off With Elixir course, seeing if I can update my failing demos on my lunch hour. Made it through 10 of 25 or so... this is fun :).
Hey want to do something fun over the weekend? Maybe write a linked list from scratch 🤣? You'd be surprised how many people can't, no matter how experienced they are!
I totally understand flaming someone for spamming you with unsolicited marketing crap; but lighting someone on fire (me) for trying to offer Good Content that you don’t want … I mean just unsub and be on your way ya know?
BG3, Armored Core, Starfield, Elden Ring DLC… my calendar is full of Friday “vacations”. Didn’t we all do this when Taylor dropped an album per week last fall?
