I’ve been appointed by the
@UNReliefChief
as Climate Crisis Coordinator for the El Niño Response.
The climate crisis is the defining challenge of our generation. I’m excited and honored to be able to work on this important issue. (1/5)
What we need now in Somalia is emergency life-saving assistance, urgent funding for the
@UN
, NGOs and partners.
The families I've met last week in Somalia need help now. Tomorrow will be too late.
This!
Thank you to all the search and rescue personnel and humanitarians working tirelessly to help people affected by the earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria.
Women empowering women.
Thank you
@AminaJMohammed
for bringing together
@UN
women leaders to discuss innovative solutions to today’s most pressing challenges.
More women in leadership = a better future.
Flying over the beautiful coast of Somalia this morning.
I’m looking forward to discussing with the Government and humanitarians leading the response to the drought. Most importantly, I’m eager to see the situation on the ground and talk to communities.
There is nothing inevitable about famine. It can be averted. But business as usual is not working.
Here is what I shared with
@OECDdev
today.
A thread.
Congratulations
@cindymccain
on your appointment as
@WFPChief
.
Great to see a strong woman leader as head of
@WFP
to help save lives and find global solutions to the challenging hunger crisis we are facing.
Looking forward to working together to fight famine.
Somalia
Syria
DR Congo
Afghanistan
Yemen
Chad
South Sudan
Central African Republic
Nigeria
Ethiopia
These 10 countries contribute 0.28% of global emissions.
They are also the most at risk of climate disasters contributing to food insecurity.
Somalia contributes only 0.003% to global emissions, yet already suffers the worst consequences of climate change.
Supporting Somalia is also a matter of climate justice.
As
@antonioguterres
visits the country this week, let’s commit to stand in solidarity with Somalia.
Extreme hunger is on the rise. New
@WFP
-
@FAO
report identifies 8 hunger hotspots of highest concern, up from 6 last year.
The number of people facing the risk of death and starvation has increased too.
There’s no time to lose, we need to act now.
It is now the second time Kenya is affected by floods in less than a year.
We need emergency assistance like the one provided by
@KenyaRedCross
in support of Government efforts.
But we also need longer term solutions to the climate crisis.
Women are more likely than men to experience food insecurity.
They often eat LEAST & LAST. The risk is to see a regression in the progress towards gender equality.
But women are also powerful agents of change. That’s why we need to put them at the CENTRE of humanitarian action.
I was in Iraq that tragic day of 19 August 2003. I lost dear friends and colleagues in the Canal Hotel attack.
On
#WorldHumanitarianDay
we pay tribute to the humanitarians who dedicate their lives to saving others'. We reaffirm our commitment to serve humanity.
#NoMatterWhat
The humanitarian situation in Somalia remains worrying, with 6.6 million people projected to face acute food insecurity in the coming months.
Now is not the time to forget Somalia. Urgent funding is needed to sustain the response.
Looking forward to my trip to
#Somalia
next week, a country very dear to my heart.
As the drought situation worsens across the country, we need all hands on deck to prevent the worst.
The climate crisis is a humanitarian crisis.
It is a moral imperative to act now to alleviate the suffering of those who are the most impacted by climate change - and contribute the least.
The women I’ve met in Somalia this week told me they’ve lost all their cattle. This means no more milk for their children or money to buy food.
We have to unlock urgent funding to provide lifesaving food & assistance.
We need funding NOW to
#FightFamine
. Later will be too late.
It is time we hear and amplify the voices of local organizations and marginalized communities.
It is time we invest in the solutions that align with their priorities.
#FightFamine
#FightFoodCrises
Famine could be the next big crisis of 2023 if we don’t act now.
Solutions exist, we just need to step up, together.
Member States,
@WFP
,
@FAO
and I discussed today at
@UNGeneva
how to strengthen collective efforts to
#FightFamine
.
In the Somali region of
#Ethiopia
, the communities displaced by the historic drought need emergency life-saving assistance.
But the women I met this week asked for this assistance not to be forever, and move to sustainable support to help them rebuild their lives and dignity.
Our world is facing multiple challenges, but the threat of famine must be a red line.
We have the resources to
#FightFamine
, what we need is political will.
Great to connect with
@NimoA_Hassan
from the Somali
@NGOConsortium
today!
Local actors are key to build community resilience.
We discussed the need to ensure national NGOs receive a bigger share of humanitarian financing and are better involved in decision processes.
Imagine being a child and surrounded by high waters.
Women, children, and people living with disabilities are the most vulnerable to disasters.
Huge appreciation to first responders who prioritize their needs.

The drought in the Horn of Africa has devastated communities for years.
I’m honored to be moderating a panel on 24 May with humanitarian partners to explore the long-term solutions needed to end the threat of hunger in the region.
➡️
#InvestInHumanity
Without urgent support, the Horn of Africa risks being trapped in a cycle of hunger and displacement causing suffering for years.
We have to take action to address this climate injustice.
#InvestinHumanity
Let's share this call from NGOs partners:
Immediate funding is needed now in Somalia to
#FightFamine
, as well as investment in long-term solutions to support economic development and climate adaptation.
It's about saving lives now, and building a better future.
Climate change and economic shocks are exacerbating hunger in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.
It’s time to
#InvestinHumanity
and step up in solidarity for the Horn of Africa.
The
@UNReliefChief
message yesterday on CNN was very clear: if female aid workers are not allowed to work in Afghanistan, then we won't be able to deliver humanitarian assistance as planned, in particular for the six million people on the brink of famine.
There is clear evidence that the drought in Somalia has caused excess deaths. Numbers have been increasing sharply since 2021.
Behind these numbers, there is loss, and grief. These deaths are entirely preventable. We can, and must act now.
This week, I traveled to Ethiopia’s Somali region with
@OCHA_Ethiopia
colleagues &
@ZimudziFarayi
from
@FAOEthiopia
to talk to communities displaced by the current drought.
We need to help these families with urgent assistance & long-term support against climate change.
As we continue to see rising hunger in the world, the Global Report on Food Crises is an essential tool to inform action.
Join me as I moderate its launch event from Nairobi and hear from UN & partners how we can
#FightFamine
together.
🔗
We live in an interconnected world. We are all impacted by the global hunger crisis, and we can all play a role in solving it.
When we hit a crisis of immense proportions like this one, business as usual is not working. We have to come together and act as one.
This incredible data visualization makes it clear: climate change is accelerating. And this has a direct impact on food security.
Meteorological services and early warning systems are essential to inform action.
#WorldMetDay
.
We can prevent this El Niño event from turning into a disaster.
What are we waiting for?
@BethBechdol
and I raised the alarm at
@UN_Spokesperson
noon briefing.
There is no simple solution to the scourge of hunger.
This week at
#EHF2023
,
@eu_echo
brought us together to think about coherent and sustainable ways to address the global food crisis.
This is what we said:
Parenting is the most rewarding thing I will ever do.

I’m on my way to Brussels to attend the European Humanitarian Forum
#EHF2023
.
Looking forward to a strategic discussion tomorrow on how to respond to the global food crisis and
#FightFamine
.
This has to be a top priority of the world’s global agenda.
We cannot wait for another famine to help Yemen. Today, 17 million people, more than half of the country’s population, suffer from acute food insecurity.
As donors meet this Monday to renew their support for Yemen, I urge them to step up in solidarity.
#YemenCantWait
.
In South Sudan and dozens of countries across the world, the climate crisis is exacerbating hunger.
We need to invest massively in climate adaptation, and countries that are the most impacted by climate change should benefit from loss and damage funding.
Nearly all countries are experiencing high food inflation, contributing to an unprecedented hunger crisis.
As global leaders meet this week at the World Bank on
#ReshapingDevelopment
, they must step up to ease the impact of the global crisis on the most vulnerable people.
Latest data from the
@WorldBank
shows that food inflation remains worryingly high globally. This impacts communities that can barely afford food, but also aid operations.
Trade restrictions are only making things worse. We need to work together to fight the global hunger crisis.
Burkina Faso continues to face the worst humanitarian crisis in its history.
Over 2 million people are suffering from acute food insecurity, and the number could reach 3.4 million if urgent assistance is not provided now.
Thank you
@adam_abdelmoula
for our fruitful discussion on the scale-up of humanitarian operations in Somalia.
Now is not the time to slow down. We need early funding to keep delivering life-saving aid.
Food insecurity hits women and girls the hardest.
We need to recognize and address the gendered impact of the global hunger crisis.
#InternationalWomensDay
Great meeting with Deputy Prime Minister
@SalahJama
, Commissioner
@MahamuudMoallim
, and humanitarian partners in Mogadishu & Gaalkacyo.
We are working together to reach people in urgent need of assistance & build a resilient Somalia to face the impact of the climate crisis.
“It’s a climate crisis now.
People are dying because of it.”
#ClimateChange
is driving famine. 220 mln people don't know where their next meal will come from. UN Famine Prevention & Response Coordinator
@RGhelani
calls for climate funding and adaptation now.
#ClimateAction
The
#ClimateCrisis
is one of the main drivers of the humanitarian crisis in the Sahel.
Urgent humanitarian support needs to be coupled with long-term solutions such as investing in climate adaptation.
How comes one of the most resources-rich countries in the world has the highest number of hungry people? WFP's
@PhiriTomson
is right to ask.
This year, over 25 million people will face acute food insecurity in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Farm schools of drought-resistant crops.
Climate information.
Cash transfers.
This is how
@WFP
is helping communities anticipate the impact of El Niño in Madagascar.
Very impressed by my visit to
@PamMadagascar
project in Southern Madagascar - with
@WFP_UNHAS
support.
Today, there are 150 million more hungry women and girls than men. The gender gap in food security is increasing quickly.
Investing in women and girls is the smart thing to do to fight the global hunger crisis.
Good news.
@UNReliefChief
is releasing an extra $13.5 million from
@UNCERF
to strengthen the response to El Niño, bringing the total allocations to over $60 million globally.
This will help Governments & communities in Southern Africa address the worst impacts of the drought.
The
@IPCC_CH
report is clear: increasing climate extreme events expose millions of people to acute food insecurity.
We need climate justice now, through climate adaptation funding for countries that have contributed the least yet are affected the most by the climate crisis.
More than a billion adolescent girls and women suffer from malnutrition because of lack of nutrients in their diets. In some countries, it’s 25% more than just two years ago.
Women and girls must be at the centre of our efforts to
#FightFamine
.
This $250 million
@UNCERF
allocation will help actors on the ground quickly scale up life-saving assistance.
This is a historic sign of mobilization to
#FightFamine
.
The unprecedented challenges we face require bold solutions.
Fighting the global food crisis must be a top priority for the international community.
Our latest update produced with partners at
@fightfoodcrises
highlights efforts undertaken to
#FightFamine
, including a spotlight on
@NimoA_Hassan

Great to meet President
@Mustafe_M_Omer
today in Jijiga, Ethiopia.
Heartened to see how his team is focused on scaling up humanitarian response for those most in need, while leading change to build a resilient future against recurring drought.

When given the opportunity, women have proven that they can lead the fight against hunger.
Just wrapped up two days of dialogue about
#WomenAgainstHunger
with this group of amazing women leaders bringing change in their communities, determined to lift each other up.
Since its launch last summer, the Black Sea Grain Initiative has enabled the export of 23 million tons of grain from Ukrainian ports, helping reduce the prices of food and fertilizers.
Its rollover is critical to tackle the global hunger crisis.
Enough is Enough.
Women and girls are the most impacted as wars are raging.
We are coming together as
#WomenForPeace
to urge for a humanitarian ceasefire.
We must be faster and less risk averse to tackle the global food crisis.
It needs commitment and hard work. But by working together, we can better prevent and respond to food crises.
My remarks at
#ECOSOC
today:
Today I had the opportunity to accompany
@KenyaRedCross
in Kisumu in Western Kenya and meet families displaced by the floods.
Volunteers and first responders are real life heroes. They have rescued more than 300 people and assisted thousands of families in the past week alone.
Donors have been incredibly generous in their support for the humanitarian response in the Horn of Africa.
Now is the time to redouble efforts.
Great exchange with
@VOANews
journalist and Somalia expert
@HarunMaruf
.
Burkina Faso
Mali
South Sudan
Sudan
Palestine
Those are the five most concerning
#HungerHotspots
globally.
Urgent scale up of support is needed to avoid a deterioration.
Over 60% of the population in South Sudan is food insecure.
The country has the potential to grow food for the entire region but is now experiencing some of the highest levels of hunger in the world.
Emergency assistance and long term investment are both urgently needed.
The Global Report on Food Crises is a wake up call to redouble efforts to
#FightFamine
.
Encouraging to see partners coming together today to reaffirm their commitment to collaborate to fight food crises.
We can turn this around, but we can only do so by working together.
Condolences to the families and colleagues of the humanitarians killed on Saturday.
Standing in solidarity with
@WFP
, humanitarians and civilians affected by the conflict that has erupted in Sudan.
This is a moment of great tragedy for the
@WFP
family. I am heartbroken to confirm that three of our team members have lost their lives in the ongoing conflict in
#Sudan
, while two others are severely injured.
I demand immediate steps to guarantee the safety of those who remain.
“Famine is wholly unnecessary in the modern world. There is no deficit in human resources; the deficit is human will.”
- Martin Luther King’s words resonate with our fight today.
The climate crisis is pushing millions of people on the brink of famine.
We need a
#ClimateHungerMovement
to scale up mitigation and adaptation efforts now.
What happens when you combine climate-smart agriculture and women leadership?
You fight hunger, empower women and girls, lift communities out of poverty, and build resilience to the climate crisis.
Very inspired by the projects I visited today in Niger.
The lean season is starting in the Sahel.
High food prices and climate shocks are putting millions of families at serious risk of starvation.
The humanitarian partners I met last week in Niger told me it’s vital to scale up support.
We need to act for
#SahelNow
.
School meals are key to:
🔹Reduce malnutrition and hunger
🔹Keep children in school
🔹Boost local economies
🔹Promote gender equality
We need to keep supporting school feeding across Africa.
#ADSF
Food insecurity remains at crisis level in too many countries.
With the climate crisis getting out of control and the cost-of-living crisis, perspectives remain very worrying.
We urgently need humanitarian funding while working on long term solutions.
#FightFoodCrises
“War means hunger. Armed conflict is a key factor driving food insecurity around the world.”
-
@antonioguterres

We must redouble efforts to alleviate their suffering.
Amid grim news and suffering, I keep hope in humanity.
What puts a smile on my face is to see what women can achieve when they work together.

Almost half of the population of Haiti is facing acute hunger.
The latest report from
@theIPCinfo
shows the situation is worsening because of high inflation and insecurity.
We need increased access and resources to reach people in desperate need.
#HaitiCantWait
Nearly half of the population of Haiti suffers from severe food insecurity, one of the highest levels in the world.
Despite insecurity, humanitarians are reaching people in need even in gang-controlled areas, but urgent funding is needed to

Inspiring story from Somalia.
@DrSadiyoSiad
has founded the STEM Sisters Initiative to help Somali women and girls access careers in science and technology, and build resilience against recurring crises.
We have the technology, knowledge and resources to predict and prevent extreme hunger and to halt the deadly slide into famine. Now we need political courage and commitment to
#FightFamine
.
Almost half of the population in Somalia needs humanitarian assistance as a result of prolonged drought and conflict.
To avert the risk of famine, immediate funding is needed now.
In a world with more than enough food to nourish everyone, allowing famine to happen is unconscionable.
Today at

we underscored solutions to revert the current hunger crisis and avert future crises.

Key takeaways from
@UNOCHA_ROSEA
report on the drought response in Kenya:
▪️Needs rose quickly in 2022,
▪️UN & partners supported the Government-led response
▪️Funding should come earlier
▪️Thanks to the US for providing 70% of funds : we need other donors to step up.
Letting famine happen in the 21st century is an offence to our shared humanity.

Now is not the time to forget the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Because of climate change, the Horn of Africa could be trapped in a cycle of hunger and displacement causing suffering for years.
Solutions exist: we need to invest in climate resilience to prevent future disasters.
Only 3% of funding for climate solutions go to women led-businesses.
