Scholz and Economy Minister Robert Habeck are liaising closely on the matter with European allies and the US, which is pushing for a global blockade of China’s access to key technologies, including semiconductors.

Officials in Berlin said there’s no pressure from Washington on the matter but rather a strong desire to work together and to close ranks on China.

Habeck, who is also the vice chancellor, has advised officials in his department to work on a tool box of measures to strengthen Germany’s economic resilience in certain areas and reduce one-sided dependencies on China. The idea of imposing export controls on chip chemicals is…

@pstAsiatech “Germany in Talks to Limit Export of Chip Chemicals to China” That’s why BASF is expanding in China and not in Germany.

While the U.S. is seeking to isolate China economically, two powerful engines of the German economy, Volkswagen and the chemical company BASF, are broadening their huge Chinese investments.

@pstAsiatech ”Germany depends on China to provide essential technology products, including mobile phones and LEDs, as well as raw materials, including lithium and rare earth elements. These are critical to Germany’s plans to make a transition to cleaner energy and transportation."

@pstAsiatech CN has benefitted a lot from western technology no matter what many said about the Chinese economic miracle. The litmus test will be whether they can truly innovate and become less dependent on the west. Quite hard to do so in my view.

@pstAsiatech Every day, German commits economic seppuku, it's INSANE that they don't see it. How does a country greatly benefiting from globalisation cut off industries from their biggest client consistently??? But when u figure Germany has been occupied by the USA since WW2, it makes sense

@pstAsiatech But also, have preemptive calculations been made on China's countermove on Germany if they pull such a stunt. This is not only the end of globalization but also the beginning of a trade war.
