Once the mother plant has given enough nutrients for the babies to form, the fruit will start to dry, as well as the seeds inside of it. These babies can lose ~90% of their water. What is super cool! (e.g. we humans can't lose even 8%of our body water). A reminder: #drinkwater 💧!

Most likely the baby seeds 'know' they will face extreme drought already during their development, and the resurrection plants were smart enough to wake up this 'memory' dyring their evolution so that they could live and chill in very very dry environments! ☺😎✌🏾 #plantsarecool

For example, some proteins called LEAs can protect cells from death caused by dehydration. These proteins are produced in the developing seeds even before they start to dry.😯The same protective LEAs help the leaves of #resurrectionplants to survive extreme drought!🤯

Some species of spikemosses (Selaginella) can dry out and 'resurrect' once re-hydrated. A recent study found that different genes have been co-opted for the same desiccation tolerance trait in several species of #Selaginella . A cool example of convergent #evolution !
