Percy dreamed of Kronos and Luke in his old principal’s office because it was the last place where he felt both powerlessness from an authority and betrayal from a friend 😃

With season 2 renewed, it’s clear the writers are looking forward and considering the full picture of the series - and that means the Great Prophecy. The show is already sprinkling in some little seeds about it. Annabeth saying “you still don’t know how you fit into all this.”
@LONGLlVE_
until he thought about the few times Poseidon showed he cared about him. that was the only hope that pushed him to jump to the river (besides having no other choice) 🥲
Percy Jackson, the son of Poseidon (see episode 8), while at the same time making it clear that he holds innately human qualities, instilled in him by his mother, that make him different from the gods and even many of the demigods (see episode 5). His unconditional love, loyalty,
Kronos saying his rise depends on Percy’s survival. It all points to Percy being important in ways he can’t even realize just yet. But the show is also doing something the books never did - it’s giving us insight as to WHY Percy is the prophecy child.
Why did the Fates choose him specifically for the job, rather than Thalia or Nico?
A big theme in the show - maybe the BIGGEST theme - has been Percy’s relationship with the mortal world and the godly world respectively. Over the course of the season he fully accepts his role as
next episode
* Percy leans over to Annabeth in the truck *
“you’re being weird again…oh I get it…it doesn’t have to be a thing, you know…that you cried over me”
But the Great Prophecies? Preserve OR raze. Storm OR fire. Even the Fates don’t know the outcome. In the end it all comes down to a hero’s choice. So why was Percy made to be the hero in question? Maybe because he lives in his father’s world but sees it through his mother’s lens.
light on complete different areas i.e. the Great Prophecy.
If you read to the end of this thing I actually love you and wish you all the good things in the world 😌💙
etc. are all common talking points. His belief in free will, not so much.
We get to see this most clearly through the lens of Percy and Annabeth, especially across episodes 4 and 5. Annabeth believes in fate and the power of the gods to guide their lives. She is terrified when
she sees the string get cut at the arch because she knows it means someone will die, no question. But Percy tells her that his own choices alone determine the course of his life and destiny. Annabeth’s line “Luck? Or fate?” showcases this dichotomy well. She believes in the gods.
He is more willing to place his faith in pure coincidence than do the same. Maybe this goes back to the sea not wanting to be restrained and all. More likely it goes back to the fact that submitting to fate would mean leaving the mortal world and fully accepting this frankly
“If my life is going to mean anything, I have to live it myself.” Percy does come to accept the godly world at the end of the season, yes. But that in no way means he leaves his mother and the mortal world behind. Quite the opposite - he incorporates one into the other.
about the Oracle’s prediction, he insisted to Ares that they wouldn’t let the quest fail. When Luke betrayed him, he said, “This isn’t you. This is Kronos.” Through Percy’s eyes, the tragedy was not in Luke’s actions, but in the idea that his friend’s free will had been taken
That’s REALLY what the series is about. Not just Percy coming to terms with his godly family, but using his mortal upbringing to try and make them better. So while fate may often influence his decisions, at the same time he has been raised to believe his decisions can influence
For the record I do think I just spouted a bunch of bs and the writers in no way did all of this intentionally. But they were clearly leaning into a fate vs free will dialogue with Percy and Annabeth, and I just think it’s cool how their attention to detail in one area can shed
awful world of gods and myths he’s been dropped into.
In reality, this belief in free will is not so simple in the ways it actually plays out. Percy was born cursed because his father broke an oath - his entire life affected because of someone else’s choice. And even the
fate instead. And that’s the basis to me. Those 3 old ladies and their yarn might not know how the Titan War ends. They can’t say whether or not Percy will make the right choice. But they DO know that when the time comes, he alone will have the courage to make a choice at all.
choices he makes himself are oftentimes either guided or impacted by a higher power. He picked Grover and Annabeth for the quest solely because he was afraid of the Oracle’s prophecy. He kept choosing to sacrifice himself because of an ingrained fatal flaw that controls his
entire worldview and way of being. He mailed Medusa’s head to Olympus, but was shocked and confused when the gods changed the rules and punished someone else for his decision.
All of this, however, is not enough to totally diminish Percy’s faith in free will. Though he worried
away, that he wouldn’t have possibly done these terrible things otherwise. It’s safe to say he gets this emphasis in self-determination from Sally, who said she wants him to grow into his own person without the gods molding him into their version of a hero. Who in the books said,
That finally brings us back to the Great Prophecy. I never noticed this until recently, but what makes the Great Prophecies different from all the regular prophecies is that they are open-ended. Before a quest, the Oracle states exactly how it will go down, set in stone.
@CWilde003
