World premiere at Venice: MARRIAGE STORY is a knockout. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson marvelous in Noah Baumbach’s fully felt chronicle of a long-distance breakup and the child in the middle. Plus Driver performs a tip-top rendition of Sondheim’s “Being Alive.” #Venezia76

Confirmed by one of his sons this morning: Director Stanley Donen has died at 94. With Gene Kelly he brought ON THE TOWN and SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN into the world; on his own, 7 BRIDES, CHARADE and TWO FOR THE ROAD. A huge, often neglected talent. #StanleyDonen

I just loved Tom Wilkinson, gone far too soon. Rewatched the first 3 minutes of "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and his 1985 prologue--right down to the tiny, barely inflected aside ("it's all right") on camera to his remorseful son--is so very, very right indeed. RIP, and thanks.

There was nobody in Hollywood in 1940 or 1950 that came close to the raw acting talent of someone like Meryl Streep or Daniel Day Lewis or one of our great actors today. The "greats" of that era were turning in performances that would be considered hammy and contrived today.

When a film as good, and as "small" ($2.4 million domestic box office) as THE RIDER wins an award, even if that award urges a few hundred or a couple thousand more people to take a chance on it, any platform...this is why awards aren't entirely full of shit. @NatSocFilmCrix
