11 federally recognized tribes are within the borders of Minnesota; 5 are inside the 8th Congressional District. That's why it's perplexing and disappointing to see #MN08 Rep. Pete Stauber leading the opposition to Deb Haaland's historic appointment as Interior Secretary.

β€œThis historic nomination is more important to us and all of Indian country than any other Cabinet nomination in recent history,” leaders of five Native American tribes wrote in defense of Rep. Haaland, President-elect Biden’s pick for Interior secretary.

Never before has a Native American led the Department of the Interior - the agency responsible for protecting our natural resources and honoring our relationship with tribes. Deb's qualified leadership is needed now more than ever. Rep. Stauber should rescind his opposition.

@peggyflanagan Representative Stauber is allowed to have differing opinions on natural resource development on federal lands. Rep Haaland coauthored legislation with @BettyMcCollum04 to restrict mining in MN. That’s a good reason to oppose her nomination.

@peggyflanagan Disappointing too, yet not hugely surprising, that he did not first go to the tribal leadership of the tribes in his district to discuss this prior to taking that action in Congress.

@peggyflanagan Thank you @LtGovFlanagan . One question though, why did Governor Walz approve Line 3? I emailed and got a generic response back but it seems like that is a pretty big disappointment to the tribes in MN (and to anyone who cares about climate change).

@peggyflanagan Maybe Sedition Pete hasn't been paying attention. I mean he does seem to have his head in the sand unless, of course, you're talking about opposing American democracy. (He has interest in that.) Right, @RepPeteStauber ? What do you say?

@peggyflanagan Historic should be a side note to β€œqualified”. No offence, but the Dems specialize in trying to avoid ascertaining if someone is β€œqualified”.
