I need a new pinned tweet but I'm currently still in One Piece hell and working on a book I can't talk about yet so this is what you get. I'm
@ohcararara
on all social platforms (and PayPal/Venmo/CashApp if you're feeling 🤪), and you can see my work on
Remember when Nintendo was like "listen, we're sorry but we're delaying Tears of the Kingdom a bit so we can make a better game without totally destroying our devs" and everyone was like "ok bummer, but cool" and then the game came out and blew everyone's BUTTS OFF?
I left a four year relationship because as my art was gaining popularity and I was doing more shows, my boyfriend insisted I was wasting my time trying to do art for a living.
Last year I got to do official art for one of his favorite video game franchises.
So at the library, patrons can check out laptops to use while they're in the building. Usually we ask them to leave their ID at the desk as collateral, but like, teens only have their school ID if that. SO one group of teens here has taken to leaving Kpop photo cards instead.
Nerd boys wanting to date me because I "remind them of Ramona Flowers" have fucking ruined Scott Pilgrim to me.
Spoiler: no girl wants to date Scott Pilgrim.
Hey casual reminder that Over the Garden Wall comics exist and I drew a lot of them, and this spooky scary fall is a good time to go to your local shop and pick them up
Also it is not lost on me how valuable some of these cards are, whether literally or sentimentally, so the trust these teens have in leaving their idol cards with librarians is powerful (don't worry, we protect them as dearly as anything else we receive as collateral)
Oh my god I had to crawl through my old Tumblr to find the one piece of Hannibal fanart I drew TEN YEARS AGO but also I found this cursed announcement so I'm gonna just go crumble into dust now
Anyway I cried last night because I got so overwhelmed by how good the story structure of this stupid game is and also probably because I hadn't eaten dinner yet
I feel like so many of my artist friends, myself included, have been hit by art burn out in a real way this year. No longer finding joy and instead dreading what used to be your favorite thing is the WORST. Please tell artists how much you enjoy their work.
We should also probably have a conversation about how comic artists usually have to work multiple jobs under grueling hours and deadlines to make ends meet thanks to paltry rates and no health benefits. We're destroying our bodies and our health for very little reward.
I think a lot about the high school counselor who told me "if you get into the college you want, you shouldn't let the cost stop you. That's what loans are for."
Like. Can I sue her or something? Haunt her when I'm dead?
Hey.
Hey you wanna know a secret about getting past an art block?
Embrace the slump, do something else for a while, and know that when you're ready to draw again, its gonna feel AMAZING.
I did not expect this post to blow up, please visit your local library and sign up for a card if you don't have one yet! I can't say if other branches will accept idol cards as collateral, but most libraries offer TONS of really cool services you may not be aware of!
Anyway, BOTW was the first time I've ever actually played a Zelda game and I ate it UP and I need to work my way through the rest of the series but at the same time I'm glad I haven't because while I know that it's hard to string together a coherent plotline over all the games--
Hey seriously though, don't put pressure on artists to "use this time to create even more/powerful art". We're tired and depressed too and depression =/= art for everyone.
For example, at my library we lend out Wi-Fi hotspots if you can't get online at home! We also have a huge DVD and video game collection with new releases! We also have classes and workshops almost every week! I'm teaching a class on making comics next month!
I'm having such a good time learning about the Zelda universe through BOTW and TOTK. Like, I found myself wondering why you don't see male Gerudo, and then later in TOTK I was like "OOOOOOH....that's badass". Lots of things like that.
The entire comics industry needs a complete overhaul. Publishers need to stop spending crazy licensing money for the rights to do certain franchise comics and then turning around and paying artists less than $100/page for pencils and inks.
I say this before nearly every large convention, but seriously, even if I've met you multiple times before, even if we once shared a personal, intimate talk in which we stared each other in the eyes for an hour, PLEASE remind me who you are when we meet again
/whispers/ this was discussed a lot last summer, but as cons slowly start coming back, can we NOT bring back the culture of feeling pressured to make all your industry connections at bars over drinks after show hours?
Anyway, if the books and movies dont make it obvious, Scott Pilgrim is a story about a shitty guy treating people like shit and acting like a hero about it, and it should absolutely not be idolized, you walnuts.
Like 3 years after drawing this I finally sat down and finished it and I honestly love how it turned out??? 🥺 I’ve just been in a Haikyuu mood again recently.
Halloween is almost here, and you know what that means: Time to be reminded of your weird crush on a zombie and a cat when you were 10 and saw Hocus Pocus for the first time
We also: can give out museum passes, loan out cute puppets for kids, talk excitedly about our favorite books and LOVE to hear what books you enjoy, go out of our way to hunt down titles even if we don't have them at our branch, and let kids play Roblox on our computers lol
If your art teachers look down on you for drawing anime or manga, argue with them to an extent but also: let them teach you outside of your comfort zone. Tear that knowledge away from them. Use it to make you better, stronger. Then draw REALLY GOOD anime and get paid for it.
LRT: I've been quiet about it for a long time, but I've never been able to enjoy Spider-Gwen since shortly after the series first debuted, Robbie invited one of my best friends and I to his hotel room for a threesome.
Vaguely more context: we both graduated college wanting to pursue careers in comics. He was doing really well, but realized it would take him a LONG time to start earning Marvel money, and he found a job in movie production instead--
But yes even just signing up for a library card even if you never use it actually helps libraries out SO MUCH because we can show our numbers and say "look! Look how many people rely on us in our community! Give us more funds so we can keep helping!"
We also have cooking classes and take home craft kits! Local professionals come in to talk about things like bee keeping and mushroom foraging! And our branch and many others automatically renew your check outs AND we're fine free! GO TO YOUR LIBRARY!
Hey let's make 2019 the year you tell content creators how much their work has meant to you. It's so easy to focus on the negative voices and forget the positive ways your work has touched other people.
Don't want to go to the physical library? That's okay! Your library card will give you access to all KINDS of digital resources like audio books, ebooks, magazines, language courses, genealogy resources, and more!
Life has been kicking me in the head a lot this year, and I have two bills to pay this week and need a way to DO that, SO, I'm releasing two popular designs for 2 WEEKS ONLY
I know these dang mom gangs arent gonna stop grouping together to push their kids in packs of strollers past my house everyday, but I'm gonna be passive aggressive the only way I know how.
This is still one of my all time favorite movies because of the over saturated, over the top, maximalist catholic imagery from the late 90's it does an amazing job of capturing
It was a fine fit for him and he was happy doing his new work, but his experience in comics left him jaded and he was like "why would you WANT to do art as a living?"
OKAY BRACE YOURSELVES.
It was a wake/memorial.
For the guy's ex.
At a Dave and Busters.
I had no idea ahead of time. I just thought we were gonna go play skeeball.
This local black owned business has amazing cookies AND theyre shipping right now. I'm hoping that lemon cream pie cookie is back in stock soon because omg.
Hey brag about your D&D characters to me. I need some positive vibes and I love how excited people get about their creations. DM's, who are your favorite NPC's?
Which I mean, is more or less what I do now. But boy perfected the art of not leaving the apartment for days and surviving off of delivery food and ignoring me
I'm psyched to announce my new series, Eighty-Six, coming this fall from me and
