When you’re grumpy because you drank your milk too quickly and the keeper doesn't have anymore 😻
Our vet & Animal Care staff are now working on building up her strength so she can explore her outdoor hospital stall.
We’ll keep you “cub-dated” on this fuzzy little fighter.
We are happy to report that Holly the rescued orphaned mtn lion continues to improve. She is much feistier, and has also started eating for us!
Our vets remain cautiously optimistic, but she is still under intensive care treatment.
We'll keep you posted on this little one ❤️
After years of being deprived of enrichment at the roadside zoo she was rescued from, Mia's first interaction with a ball at our Vet Hospital is caught on camera thanks to Keeper Nikki.
We think it's safe to say she likes it.
Holly Update! 😺
Our girl is gaining weight, no longer receiving ICU treatments, and getting stronger every day!
She's hitting all her benchmarks, which is a great sign for her recovery.
Check out this cat nap video by Keeper Nikki.

The reports about any of our animals being outside of the Zoo are FALSE. The FALSE report was given by a bus driver to the Alameda County Sheriff.
Thank you all for your concern and have a safe night!
Holly with the fierceness!
This mountain lion behavior is exactly the kind we want to see. In addition, she's eating, investigating her new stall, and in true cat fashion, taking naps as she builds her strength.
Stay tuned for more updates on her progress.

Hazel CUBdate: this orphaned mtn lion is learning to eat on her own, currently small amounts 5x/day. She still has her IV in, but that could come out soon. She’s not “in the clear” yet, but eating on her own is a big step in the right direction. 😻

Vet Tales Friday - Holly Update!
Our amazing vet team has made some great progress with this little cub. Holly is gaining weight, eating and drinking independently, and becoming more active. She's participating in training and interacting with enrichment. All things positive!🤞
Great news! Today an Oakland resident living a few miles from the Zoo spotted Deauville, one of our 2 last missing birds, a Pied Crow. Our keepers headed over and were able to lure him inside this kind resident’s home, where he was safely caught & brought back to the Zoo!

Oh, baby! Our meerkat mob has expanded with the arrival of a litter of pups. They are 3 weeks old and have started to make a few appearances outside of their den.
IF you see the mini-meerkats when visiting the Zoo, please speak softly — they’re very new and tender ❤️
Another cub rescue! Meet Hazel, our newest patient.
This mtn lion cub was spotted yesterday in Soquel (near S. Cruz) by a resident. After it was determined there was no mother nearby,
@CaliforniaDFW
captured Hazel and brought her to our vet hospital for treatment.

Highway 17 in Santa Cruz County has its 1st dedicated wildlife crossing!
Busy highways separate cat populations and lead to cats being injured or killed by cars. This underpass will help mtn lions and other animals safely get to where they need to go.

Our vet team examined Rose yesterday and she is looking really good 😊 She now weighs over 12lbs (she was only 8 lbs when she arrived). She's eating 5 times a day, which is great!
No other concerns found during her exam.
Happy Friday indeed ❤️
Our newest hospital patients -- two rescued, orphaned mountain lion cubs -- now have names: meet Maple and Willow!

Oakland Zoo is closed and will be unable to reopen until January 17th, or possibly later, due to a major sinkhole caused by a collapsed culvert located under the vehicle entrance to the Zoo at Golf Links Road... (Part 1)
Rose CUBdate: this orphaned mountain lion's energy has improved!
Yesterday, we removed her IV catheter and her collar. She's gaining weight and feistier than ever.
We will be rechecking her blood and weight Thursday. We'll keep you posted on this little fighter ❤️

Did you know American bison, like this guy romping in the dirt, were driven to the brink of extinction back in the 1900s? Protecting species like this led to the 1973 passing of the Endangered Species Act.

Happy HOLLY-days for this rescued mountain lion cub, who continues to improve!
Holly is already showing us a calm but curious demeanor. She has a growing appetite too :)
The Christmas spirit is strong in this one — we hope you are all feeling loved and cared for today as well!
While the Zoo remains closed to the public, our Animal Care staff is on site every day as usual, making sure all animals are comfortable and cared for...including resident mountain lion Silverado. Nice rain-gazing nook, cool cat!

We haven’t seen significant improvement in Lisa the elephant’s mobility since her recent stem cell treatment, but more importantly, we haven’t seen continued decline.
We're hopeful the treatment slowed progression of her arthritis that we often see in the winter months.🐘❤️
With extreme sorrow we share the news that after several years of chronic health issues Lisa, our beloved 46-year-old African elephant, was humanely euthanized yesterday.
Her decades-long residency deeply impacted dedicated keepers, vet team, & millions of Zoo guests.

Soon, rescued mountain lion cubs Maple and willow will be too big for their care team to handle directly.
In order to continue our high standard of care, we've begun to desensitize these sweet sisters to all kinds of additional experiences, including shifting to different
Did you know Oakland Zoo has helped rescue over 20 mountain lion cubs that otherwise would not have survived? For the next 5 Wednesdays we’re revisiting some of the most memorable mountain lions our rescue team has helped save and find “furrever homes” for.
Hazel has remained anemic, so our vet team decided to perform a blood transfusion from our resident mtn lion Silverado.
We are pleased to report that the transfusion, performed yesterday, was a success.
Thank you Silverado, for once again saving an orphaned cub’s life!

Hazel is stable, but keeps chewing through her IV. We're troubleshooting ways to make the IV look less tasty to her.
This rescued mtn lion cub is also teething and likes to gnaw on everything -- even when she's super sleepy after eating a meal.
Oh baby! We have now welcomed TWO new bison this season 🦬
When they are older, these bison offspring join a larger bison herd in Montana as part of the Iinnii Initiative, restoring this majestic mammal to land they once roamed freely and in much larger numbers.

Hazel and Holly are settling in to their temporary home at California Trail. We're working with the cubs to acclimate them to different temperatures, spaces, and activity.
When they’re ready, we’ll give H&H access to additional outdoor space.
Sadly, in addition to her ongoing arthritis and mobility issues, Lisa has developed a condition called ventral edema, which is fluid collecting along the bottom of her belly.
In short, Lisa is slowing down. We continue to provide lots of TLC to this elderly elephant 🐘❤️
Attention to all our followers: The reports about any of our animals being outside of the Zoo are FALSE. The FALSE report was given by a bus driver to the Alameda County Sheriff.
Thank you all for your concern and have a safe night!
RAWR! Rose the rescued mtn lion got a room upgrade, is now eating 4 big meals a day. She's experiencing some hair loss (often seen in animals recovering from severe emaciation) but is growing rapidly & looking very big and fuzzy.
We'll keep you posted on this spectCATular cub!

Holly is doing great! She has put on healthy weight and we are working on helping this mountain lion cub get stronger. Here's Holly having a yummy protein-rich lunch of meatballs, courtesy of Keeper Nikki.

Holly & Hazel have moved to their temporary home next to our resident mtn lions!
Before they head to their "furrever home" in SoCal, these 2 cubs will experience sounds & smells of animals & human visitors, and soon, interact w/our resident mtn lions along a shared fenceline.
As many of you know, Lisa, one of our African elephants, passed away last month from age-related health issues. And some of you have asked us what will happen with Donna, Lisa’s life-long best friend and companion, since she is now our only female elephant. For now, we have been

brought an emaciated mtn lion cub to our vet hospital. A Santa Cruz resident noticed the cub on her property and alerted CDFW. After waiting to see if the cub’s mother returned (she didn’t), they brought the cub to us.
Willow and Maple are getting comfortable in their new surroundings up at California Trail. They’re not in public view, but they are in a nice penthouse suite with both indoor and outdoor areas, and they share a fenceline with our resident mountain lions Coloma and Silverado.

In the 49 years since its passage into law, the act has helped to save many species including the bald eagle from going extinct. In the 1950s, there were less than 1,000 remaining. Today, there are over 300,000!
