Pro-tip: the next time someone says that acts of genocide or ethnic cleansing were committed against Muslims in the Balkans or Anatolia, you can fall back on the “on their own accord” defense

When I wrote for BBC History last year, I was initially told, apologetically by the editors, that I could not refer to the Armenian Genocide as unqualified fact for fear of legal action.
Another way of asking this question is why Russia is so conspicuously silent on TB2. Arguably it’s because 🇷🇺is eager to maintain the relationship despite the costs. It’s of genuine strategic value and one that exploits a key rift in NATO.
My heart goes out to people in Turkey this week. I cannot imagine the stress and the dull heartache everybody’s carrying. No one deserves to endure that kind of pain amid all the other things life throws at you.
You know, I'll admit, I'm not the smartest guy around but I can't help but ask why a person would quote tweet an American, for any reason, if indeed Amerikacilar are "RTE dusmanlari"?
Article 39 of Treaty of Lausanne: "No restrictions shall be imposed on the free use by any Turkish national of any language in private intercourse, in commerce, religion, in the press, or in publications of any kind or at public meetings."
A Turkish policeman tearing down a poster on a window of a restaurant in Gaziantep, southern Turkey.
Despite that Turkey is a home to minority of around 5 millions Arabs, and a host nation of 3.7 million Syrians, Arabic writing is illegal.
What type of policies is this?
I was just informed that a Turkish publisher will not be releasing a translation of my book, Heroin, Organized Crime and the Making of Modern Turkey, for fear of censorship and prosecution.
Disappointing but not all that surprising.
If you indeed could revoke territorial claims on charges of treaty violations, one could argue virtually all of the Treaty of Lausanne would be nullified, including Turkey's full sovereignty over Anatolia and Istanbul.
3. On the demilitarisation of the Aegean islands, this is stipulated by the 1923 Lausanne Treaty and the 1947 Paris Treaty. The transfer of sovereignty was made conditional on this commitment. Even today the islands are under this regime of conditional sovereignty.

I have trouble imagining a “significant” country where 532 military personnel can be taken into custody on charges of subversion and it not be a top story worldwide.
Turkey's casual militarism in 2 tweets: One is a blithe official threat to launch missiles against Athens. The other officially boasts that the campaign against Afrin began with an attack by 72 warplanes to avenge the loss of 72 soldiers.
It should be said that neither Samos or Lesbos are designated as strictly demilitarized under Lausanne. The treaty only forbids naval bases and fortifications.

A video game made by a 🇹🇷state owned company wherein players get to attack Greece I think tells us two things: 1) the increased internalization of militarism in Turkish state and society and 2) the increased normalization of the belief that war with Greece is probable.
Forgive me, but I find it *really* hard to believe that Greece or any state in Europe would be willing to renegotiate the Treaty of Lausanne at this stage, particularly if it's being prompted to do so at gunpoint.
In return, if the position of Greece, firmly backed by France, remains that the only problem is the continental shelf issue and nothing else can be discussed because they pertain to the sovereign rights of Greece, then we are stuck.
For those watching Külup, a couple of separate, but related, factoids.
1) Ahead of the September 1955 pogroms, American narcotics officials were told that Armenians and Greeks involved in Istanbul's heroin trade were being driven out of business.
Yeesh. Never have I received such abuse for an iphone autocorrect.
Btw, may I remind the bigots out there that my last name is French Canadian. I know the temptation to slay me for being Greek is strong, but try to hold back. For me, please.
On a more serious note, it is one of the weird things I have found about the Turkish press. Despite being so virulently "anti-imperyalist," Aydinlik, AHaber and other outlets will quote and embrace Americans if they think they're boosting Turkey's image. Very strange.
People will focus on the implicit threat of firing missiles on Athens. There is a much more explicit threat concerning the islands: if more "things" are brought to Greece's islands, Turkey will act.
Turkish Armed Forces declare Incirlik a "completely Turkish base." Not necessarily clear what that means to custody of nuclear weapons or status of non-Turkish personnel.
One could imagine a world where Erdogan seized upon the events on Saturday as an opportunity to secure better relations or attain important strategic or political concessions from Israel and the US. Clearly that's not where his head is at the moment.

Fault Lines last night and it occurred to me how relevant Iran-Contra still is and how few direct comparisons have been made to it in light of recent events.
Meanwhile, Disney+ offers Turkish subscribers a chance to catch this series featuring a revered national figure/military commander who ordered the burning of whole towns and mass rape of its women.
Remains to be seen if and when the US will ever get this one either.

Another exhibit re: the legal ambiguities of Turkey’s occupation of Syria. Despite no declared intent toward annexation, Turkish regional and national officials govern occupied territories as an extension of Turkey.
After 9/11, no major Turkish news outlet would have uncritically published a piece entitled "Al Qaida: Attack on Twin Towers was a Defensive Operation."
This article is reprehensible. Full stop.
State Department issues a direct statement rebuking Erdogan's threat against Greece's islands, stating that such threats are "counterproductive" in light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The fact that this tweet registered so strongly can only mean the world really wants to hear my genuine, yet outlandish opinions about my favorite, consistently underperforming sports franchises.
A pretty good reproduction of a map found within the personal papers of Talat Pasha. An interesting snapshot of the effect the genocide had upon Anatolia's demography near the war's end.
2 things, however, can be said with some certitude re: events in recent weeks:
1) After months on the defensive, there is now a concerted 🇹🇷gov/media effort to depict 🇬🇷as an unworthy NATO ally and threat to stability in the Aegean.
2) Erdogan threatened to invade 🇬🇷 2X in 1 week
An ongoing worrying problem is the general lack of transparancy when it comes to reporting in Turkish/Greek incidents. Neither side has a great track record when it comes to providing providing evidence of wrongdoing. Nor is there much contrition when things do go wrong.
Amid the pictures of looting, I think it's important to note the joy with which Turkish media shows soldiers raising Turkish flags, not Syrian ones, over Afrin. Denotes a war of conquest, not liberation.
To clarify: after a good amount of back in forth, I agreed to revise a statement that said that the genocide was "widely agreed upon". In final publication, the Armenian genocide was referenced without qualification.
The maritime programs of both Koc University and Bahcesehir scrubbed their original administration and personnel in the aftermath of the admirals scandal
One of the most, if not the most, enduring legacies of Atatürk is the use of history as a loyalty oath. Accepting the state’s version of events is an article of faith. Rejecting it is heresy or, at it’s worst, treason.
It is remarkable to note

+ other websites essential edited out Bahceli's comments that the Dodecanese as well as the northern Aegean islands are legally Turkish due to supposed treaty violations. Sort of a big deal when the government's coalition partner says this, no?
In light of the prospect of Turkey’s exploratory intentions in the Aegean, bear in mind that Greek maritime sovereignty is not only rejected but Gr islands in the Aegean are deemed a threat to Turkish sovereignty by senior Turkish officials.

Can anyone recommend articles, books or movies, in Greek or Turkish, on 1923 Greek exchangees or Turkish exchangees who go back to visit their hometowns or villages?
Can confirm: My new book, Last Days of the Ottoman Empire, will be due out late October 2022 (in time to commemorate the 100th anniversary of empire’s dissolution)
The speech Erdogan is giving now began with a statement on the need to respect the religious beliefs of others. As he’s continued, he has accented the Israeli occupation and the need to make Jerusalem the Palestinian capital.

Credit where credit is due. Turks stepping up and calling what is happening in Ukraine a war thus giving them the right to block Russian warships from transiting the Bosporus.
Ankara has had time and opportunity to make a political issue out of the mass at Sumela. All in spite of nationalist efforts to have it canceled. Seems to confirm a) no appetite for raising tensions w/🇬🇷 and b) Zaferists/Mavi Vatanists only so influential.
This is the first time I see Erdogan referring to recognised sovereign Greek territory as "occupied". While Turkey continues to claim Greek islands have to be demilitarised, it has not yet officially claimed any part of the Greek mainland as being occupied. A clear escalation.
