Early morning on 17 Feb, 1979, Chinese forces attacked six northern Vietnamese provinces. President Ton Duc Thang ordered general mobilisation. The bloody border war lasted until 16 Mar, both sides claimed victory. (Pics: Children being evacuated in Cao Bang. By Tran Manh Thuong)

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh paid tribute to the martyrs of the border war at Bo Hen, Quang Ninh province. His visit took place on 26 Jan, the timing was probably chosen to not raise too much attention. Vietnamese officials are still very cautious when speaking about China.

@ngahpham The quote I heard was Deng called Hanoi and said he would have breakfast in Beijing and lunch in Hanoi, right after he launched the attack. Did not work out that way for him.

#PresidentTonDucThang led Vietnam to win the #KhmerRouge genocidal forces in Cambodia (1978), the #SinoVietnamWar (1979) and worked hard for a massive reconstruction effort to rebuild the industry, infrastructure, economy of #Vietnam after war.
