During my entire early childhood & early teens, I have been bullied for being autistic, being different, for loving nature. Today, reading from my book, to a packed audience; talking about nature, being autistic, being different. I can’t help but feel like this 👊

This looks just like a ‘hole in a hedge’ but it’s not. It’s a Wren portal! I’ve been watching it, moving like light trickery. Today, it seemed to look at me, curiously trusting from a distance. It felt like an age but it was just a second. It was magical. Nature is magical.

I always knew that my age and being autistic would be a barricade for reviewers and readers. I was expecting it. I have been gloriously surprised & elated by the response. I wasn’t expecting it! This is beyond any hope I had!

My last walk before I travel back to Cambridge tomorrow. I will miss the waves, the angle of the light as it shines through my window, the curlew cries, watching the plunge of gannets. I will miss Rosie our elderly rescue greyhound and my family. I will really miss them, so much!

The news still hasn’t sunk in. The youngest and (I think) first ever person from N Ireland to be longlisted. In my book I express deeply my geographic and cultural roots, which make my words different & hopefully, a little refreshing. Thank you so much @wainwrightprize ! 🌱

I’ve just gotten over what has been my most exhausting fortnight here in Cambridge. I’m loving student life so much but it’s 🤯 & the workload is INSANE for my course! I can’t wait to show mum & youngest McAnulty this beautiful city at the end of term in just over 2 WEEKS! 🎉

I’ve never felt so exhausted, with the intensity of everything going on right now - my autistic brain & body is just flatlining be honest. I’m very grateful to have a quiet lane, away from the traffic, to walk on though and escape with bird and bee song...and hound hugs 🙌

Since 1966, we have lost 44 MILLION House Sparrows. To hear this glorious chittering outside my house, brightens my everyday. Destruction of habitat, tidy gardens & changes in land use, are having a decimating effect. We must make space for nature, before it’s too late.

As a small child, I was bullied constantly because of my love of nature - in particular, birds - I talked constantly of my fascination and was jeered at and…beaten up. Well, I’m glad I didn’t let the bullies win and I get the opportunity to do what I truly LOVE 💚🎉
