(Bookmark this and mock me when it’s wrong)
1. Shohei Ohtani likes Seattle
2. Shohei Ohtani may not sign with the highest bidder
3. The Mariners will make him an offer that stretches both their budget and imagination
4. It will not be close to enough
I will say, while I am obviously skeptical it works out, there is something admirable about the Mariners getting their hearts ripped out and stomped on in 2018 just to try *exactly* the same thing five years later. I aspire to this level of emotional amnesia.
I see no compelling reason not to try and do this. He's the best baseball player to ever live and it costs you nothing to try. But last time the backup plan was to cry for a few days and then blow up the roster. I sure hope there's a better one in place this time.

I want to believe but “We just didn’t feel comfortable going to the level negotiations ultimately ended up at” on a $700m deal feels so likely

Yeah I would really like to know if John Stanton and Co. understand they can offer the largest contract in professional sports history and quite possibly not be close to the highest bidder here.

I see Seattle making a hard run at signing him to a shorter term contract. Something like 5 years 275 million but don't see them doing the 10 year contract.
