This is the second quality core of players Dipoto has had here and the track record of him trying to complete the roster around those cores is not good. He deserves all the credit for assembling and developing this one, but it’s very fair to speculate if he can finish the job.
@JacsonBevens
Definitely some FA land mines out there thus far but when your plan revolves around getting the best out of players over 30 with mid-level track records the danger of sudden decline is real. Of all the acquisitions last year Hernández is the one I feel most confident about.
@nathan_h_b
Bruh, it’s still early though. Don’t you know they’re gonna win 14 in a row on the backs of each of these guys posting a 200 wrc+ the rest of the way!?
@nathan_h_b
Look at the "core" group and which one of them has outperformed expectations? 1. That's it. That's the list. As much as we want to criticize DiP for the above, Julio, Cal, Ty & Geno need to tote the mail. *JP has been exactly what he should be.
@turnz44
I can agree Julio hasn't been what you want him to be. France I'm not sure how good he really is, Geno is at an age where decline could be real. Raleigh's profile is gonna make him real hot and cold offensively. Still a good catcher.
@nathan_h_b
I think KW and Teo will move back into productive ranges. The others had short leashes and have now been replaced by Trammel and Caballero who should both be upgrades. Hummel Pollock LaStella were never here to upgrade they were just here to fill spots for cheap.
@aaron_p_o
Not great! Dodgers also have multiple established superstars and a decade+ of established big payroll/the best development in the game. Gives you a little margin for error.
@nathan_h_b
Since they moved Kelenic up in the batting order on 4/26 he has an:
OPS of .532
wRC+ of 55
Compare that to Kelenic in 2022:
OPS of .534
wRC+ of 55
Not a good sign.
@nathan_h_b
We’d be less upset if Ms took bigger free agent risks (short term, high AAV) and they under performed. But the lack of adding pieces for a championship level pitching staff and bullpen is unacceptable
@nathan_h_b
Valid point and absolutely accurate. The quality core hitters are not performing much better. Kelenic and Crawford are the only ones who are matching or besting their 2022 performance. For this team to truly compete, they need to hit as well.
@nathan_h_b
I keep having a thought in the back of my mind wondering if these guys may not just be placeholders for guys in our system... a good example would be Caballero and wong.
