So, it happened. I’ll be a tenure track assistant professor of
#physics
and group leader at
@UmeaUniversity
12/21! Extremely grateful to my family, friends, collaborators & mentors! Ready to do some interesting (ultrafast) science on functional nanomaterials for energy and life!
Nicolò Maccaferri, physicist at Umeå University, has been awarded a €2 million grant by the European Research Council for fundamental research that could change the way we store and process information.
#postdoc
position (2 years) in my group is available. I am looking for candidates with skills on modeling
#nanophotonic
systems and also with experience in standard optical characterization, as well as willing to learn more about ultrafast science! DM me if interested, please RT!
Looking for ambitious postdocs eager to apply to the next Marie Curie Fellowships call and join me at Umeå University to perform cutting edge research on ultrafast nanophotonics and advanced (quantum) materials! Interested candidates are invited to contact me! Please RT!
Just submitted my first ever
@ERC_Research
#StG
! Independently on the outcome, my greatest thanks go to my
#wife
, who let me sleep the last month so that I could finalize the writing, while she was taking care of our 4-months daughter during the night. She is the real

here!
I am looking for a postdoc researcher with strong experience in ultrafast optics to join me at
@UmeaUniversity
next year! Contract duration 2 years, extendable. I am also happy to support the researcher for applying to his/her/their own research funding for career advance. Pls RT
Thrilled to finally announce that I have been appointed Wallenberg Academy Fellow! This strong and long-term support will allow me and my group to conduct blue sky research on light-driven technology and explore high risk ideas in an open way. Extremely grateful to
@KAWstiftelsen
31 Wallenberg Academy Fellows that will tackle issues in future research has been appointed by Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. The grant includes five years of funding and the opportunity to benefit from a unique mentoring program

At
@UltraFast_Nano
@umeauniversity
, I will be hiring in 2024 on 2 grants. I look for both PhD students (4 years contract) and postdoctoral researchers (2 years contract extendable to 3 years). Expertise: ultrafast optics, magnetism, nanophotonics. If interested DM me. Please RT.
I was looking at 2023 conferences…always the same invited speakers since I was a PhD student. Well done. The funny thing is that these people organizing these self-celebrating events are the “heroes” of “diversity”, “inclusion” and “equality”. Peggio dei massoni.
I am looking for young scientists active in
#plasmonics
and
#nanooptics
who are not Caucasian and possibly not male to serve as new subcommittee members at CLEO 2023. We reached a 50/50 male/female balance last year, but now we want to be more inclusive! Please help, RT, DM me.
Super excited to receive an email from EU that one of my postdocs got a
#MarieCurieFellowship
! I am so happy for her and very proud for this milestone as it shows that the right combination of expertise can give great results! I hope this will be the first of many more!
BREAKING NEWS
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2023
#NobelPrize
in Physics to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier “for experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter.”
Very nice to start the weekend with a paper accepted in
@NatureComms
! Although I cannot disclose to many details now, this work is very important since it is one of the cardinal and starting points for a set of research directions we are taking in our lab! Stay tuned!
🎉 The latest ERC Starting Grant competition results are out!
400 bright minds have been awarded over €628 million to fund ideas at the frontiers of science & scholarship.

The system is simple: you belong to a club, a big university, a big group. You are successful. You publish “high impact”, you get all the money. What an idiot I was to think that curiosity and progress were the basement of science. End of the story.
When the "big" professor (clearly the reviewer of your proposal) publishes an article on one of the proposed experiments🤣...well done, you look very "smart"...I wait for the follow ups! Let be clear...I'll not give up, you just gave me the energy to speed up my activities!✊💪
Quite shocked to see that, despite my suggestions to correct serious errors in an article for a famous journal, the editor decided to accept and publish it anyway...I was not against publication, but several mistakes were present and I suggested (how) to correct them. Astonishing

More than 20000 “scientific” journals. Let’s say 1000 articles per journal per year on average. This means 20.000.000 articles/year. Let’s remove reviews, tutorials, etc, so 15.000.000 to stay conservative. 15 fucking millions of advances in science. We should be Gods right now.
Very happy to see that our project on nanoscale ultrafast nonthermal control of magnetism to make information processing less energy consuming will be funded by
@Vetenskapsradet
for the next 4 years! Thank you
@UmeaUniversity
for believing in us and supporting our proposal 🙏
Very happy to be part of
@IceLab_umea
and I very much look forward to push further the boundaries of interdisciplinary research
@umeauniversity
! I think this is one of the few places in the world to build genuine new bridges and unique synergies between different disciplines!
IceLab welcomes
@n_maccaferri
as an Affiliate Assistant professor. Head of the Ultrafast Nanoscience Group at the dept of Physics, UMU, and a PI at UCMR, Nicolò has many interdisciplinary projects and is involved with IceLab through several programs.
After receiving the good news in December, we signed the grant agreement recently and now we are ready for the new adventure! To those who are afraid to apply or got sad after a rejection…do not give up and continue to fight if you believe your idea is great! It will pay off!
@Nature
If you let publish in your magazine only big groups and names (sometime spotted to heavenly cheat and most of the time presenting incremental work) almost only from “ivy leagues” all over the world, the result is obvious.
I remember, when PhD started, my advisor telling me “the secret of success is going from one failure to the next one while maintaining the enthusiasm (Churchill)”. I guess that’s exactly what brought me here today.

To all the winners of the

@umeauniversity
to co-fund the purchase of a new EBL system! And today we got also the wonderful news from the other co-funder
#Kempestiftelserna
…they also approved our application and going to support us!
The Faculty of medicine board and the Faculty of science and technology board have decided grants to applicants of mid-range equipment. Four UCMR Pis receive money: Ronnie Berntsson, Felipe Cava, Gerhard Gröbner, and Nicolò Maccaferri.
@_canndo
If you pass without revisions it looks to me that reviewers have read your work in the toilet, and that they did not care for you to improve. There is always room to improve, even a genius can overlook something.
Just found out former colleagues excluded me w/o any reason from an article containing figures w/ my data. Apparently they re-made them, but there is an arXiv version of the manuscript with my figures and my name inside. Quite unpleasant!

Up to five tenure-track positions as Assistant professor at
@UmeaUniversity
…consider to apply! Deadline 15 February 2022! More than happy to provide suggestions to candidates as I was one of them almost one year ago! Please RT
Tip for candidates for PhD, Postdoc or Faculty positions: when asked, always be honest about your strengths and weaknesses. This type of honesty tells much more about who you are as a person, scientist and leader than many papers published in high impact factor journals!
Yesterday was a great day! Thank you

We look forward to see you in Messina!
Offering postdoc positions shorter than 12 months should be considered ILLEGAL. If it is the continuation of a contract I could (partially) understand. But how can you think a person with the goal to have an academic career can even think to accept an offer like this? Would you?
We are glad to present you

Hard times creates strong people. Strong people create good times. Good times create weak people…weak people creates hard times. Unfortunately, I fear that this time we are all (once again - story repeats itself) on the wrong side of history.
Many faculty positions openings in the past weeks…is this an effect of the big exodus from academia to industry in the past months or it has just arrived a period of massive retirements? 🤣
Thank you
