Schools are told at 8pm the night before schools move online (13 hours notice?!). They tell parents to complain to OFSTED if the work isn’t up to scratch. Yet they had 9 months to come up with a Plan B and haven’t managed to do so.
Ministers have been accused of a 'dereliction of duty' as schools face a near two-month wait for the government’s plan to replace GCSEs and A-levels with teacher assessments
Cheery Sainsbury’s delivery man: “doing anything good this evening?”
Me: “Nothing exciting. Just finishing off a bit of marking”
Him: “You’re a teacher, heh? Think of the overtime pay.”

(this isn’t a moan, just puzzles me that some people actually think this is the case!)
What does a successful A-level student look like?
1st draft complete. I'd really appreciate any fbk on this before using with students. Editable version available for anyone to have on the bottom of this blog post:
Thanks to

It’s set to lob it down all day so I’m having a school-work day. Going to get working on a Biology version of

? Some more photos of kids who got a C grade or an E grade, who worked really hard for that grade. Or kids who worked hard and got DDD and off to start something they’re really excited about 😍
My amazingly talented friend Mark has built this website that uses the National Grid's carbon data to show you when best to run your dishwasher, tumble dryer, etc. 🌍 Have a peek!
Two of my favourite ever A-level students from two different schools, ~15 years apart, have met each other in their medical careers and are learning from each other. My heart is full 🥰
Year 11 are using the next 10 hwks to revise the Required Practicals. They have to: (1) watch a revision video (2) make notes on the prac (3) complete past paper questions. They've made a great job on Prac 1 so far.

I finally got around to uploading a first draft of the cross-course skills booklet for Alevel Biology I’ve been trying to find the time to make all year. It’s on here - feel free to edit and share.
I’ve been trialling out printing more mini-markschemes using the “4 per page” setting. I just highlight the marking points so it’s easy for students to see which points they’ve missed out when we review the work as a class. SO much faster to mark too for most 5/6 markers.
I’m going to try & collate class sets of data for all of the applicable GCSE & A-level Biology Required Practicals (AQA). Always handy to have for data analysis or for when something goes wrong. GCSE done and I’ll add the A-level when I have time:

Remember the group of Y9 girls who found a dead fox, buried the skeleton and bleached the bones…..
They’ve finished! What an amazing job they’ve done this summer. Absolutely love it! 🦊 🦴
🧠📈📊🔍 This week I’ve have a couple of stand-alone lessons with Y12, trying to develop their AO3 evaluation skills. 🧠 📈📊🔍
I made them a booklet concentrated with “evaluate this conclusion” type questions.

Hurrah! Seven and a half years after starting my mission to cook and eat a meal from every country in the world I have finished! We started in January 2013 with a with a delicious Afghan feast, and have finished up tonight with a Zimbabwean meal. 🍴🌏
🦠🦠 How I Teach: Monoclonal Antibodies (GCSE Biology) 🦠🦠
🌟Full lesson resources attached - could save a RQT some time.🌟
HT to

for sharing their resources.
Explaining the difference in appearance of mitochondria under an electron microscope to Y12:
How do you slice a sausage for a sausage sandwich?
How do you slice a sausage for a pasta bake?....
Now more than ever, it’s vital that our young people can read, dissect and evaluate things science-based content they read online. Here is one example where I teach Scientific Literacy in the GCSE curriculum with resources attached:
First time teaching monoclonal antibodies to Y11 since the roll out of lateral flow tests. Fab to have a really relevant application to look at. Will share resources later… 🦠

I've just finished making two new skills assessments for checking tables, graphs and variables with students. Also useful for cover work. Available to download and edit to suit your classes here:
Just getting my head around the “Build a Bird: Pigeon Gene Shuffle” activity. What a fantastic resource! I love the use of real alleles. I can imagine using this case study right across the DNA topic.

Judging by the replies to this tweet you are causing a lot of unnecessary stress to our already very stressed year 13 students in what is a very unusual and uncertain time. Maybe delete it?

I’ve quickly written up how I use a model to show filtration and selective reabsorption in the kidney with GCSE groups. Accompanying PowerPoint on here too:
After a pre-recorded lesson yesterday with Y12 looking at phagocytosis, with optional Teams drop-in for help (which 3 of them popped into to ask a quick q) I asked them for some feedback as to whether they’d prefer lessons like this, or live lessons via Teams. Interesting fbk:
I’m trying to create a list of about 25 interesting organisms for Year 8 Adaptations topic next year. Ones they won’t necessarily have come across before - really obscure but cool ones. A range of animals, plants, fungi, bacteria etc. Let me know your favourites.

I know it’s a pipe dream, but imagine a world where a 3 day weekend and 4 day working week was standard. I’d gladly work longer hours for four days to have a longer weekend. More travel, more rest, more family time 🤩
@KJF239
Let's say class size of 30. I write down 30 "murder weapons", 30 locations around school & their 30 names. They draw one of each of of 3 pots. So I drew Marlowe with a pencil case in the foyer. I had to sneakily get him there and invent a reason for him to hold my pencil case 1/2

Sat marking in my lab this morning. Door bursts open and two Y12 boys fly in:
Them: “1027, 1028, 1029, 1030….”
Me: “What are you up to?!”
Them: “Counting whether there are more doors or wheels in school.”

My skills booklet (draft 1) for Alevel Biology is working out well - keeping content that doesn’t belong in one specific chapter all in one place. Needs tinkering with next year but it’ll do for now.
Thread: Explicitly teaching note-making skills to Y7
On Fri I had to teach about Asteroids & Comets to Y7. I had a ppt to use from our physics dept. As each slide came up I asked them to write down what they thought was essential into their table. I did the same on my copy (1)
Such a simple but hugely effective idea. I usually write on the markscheme - which marking points were missed, misconceptions etc, but this would give me more space.
Picked up this tip from
#edutwitter
Using a spare exam paper to jot down feedback points for each question as I mark. Helping me to record common misconceptions and mistakes. Highlighting where we need to focus our revision efforts next.
Kidney structure round on University Challenge last night (thanks, once again, to Ed for the tip). Lovely starter quiz for Y13. I’ve cropped it and popped it on YouTube for safekeeping
@AQA
please please could you consider changing this required Prac to another enzymes one? It virtually never works and is conceptually difficult for students to understand. It makes me cry inside.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I’m going to add updating this to my to-do list this week. If anyone has any data they want to share (excel files, photos or word docs etc) please do email them over or DM me. It’s a handy resource for us all to share. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Did this gem of a practical today with Year 10 on sixth form taster day. It has a wow factor and is much easier in terms of cognitive load than the cursed starch amylase.
Two weeks in and I’m glad I made the transition from books to booklets with Y7-11. I’m finding students are spending far less time writing notes and far more time practising their knowledge and I already have much more data in my mark book to see who is struggling or excelling.
I only leant about this tip last week but it saves so much time! Can print 4 tiny versions of an A4 page onto one A4 page by popping 1,1,1,1 into the “pages” box and 4 pages per sheet - handy to tape the markschemes to 5-markers etc close to the question when marked. 💡💡
Want a smaller hand out?
Two copies of the same page/slide in an A4 sheet?
Put 1,1 in the Pages box
Select '2 Pages Per Sheet'
Automatically makes an A4 sheet --> 2 x A5 copies.
Teaching Y12 how to estimate population size by random sampling in the lab with 60 paper daisies. Their estimate was about 250. “That can’t be right… there’s no way she’d be bothered cutting out that many daisies”. Too right.
Do people know about this simple demo for the impact of sweating on thermoregulation? Two TTs, wrap in cotton wool (one wet cotton wool, one dry cotton wool), fill with hot water, observe temp change. Wet cotton wool tube cools down much more quickly.
