Today’s comparison comes from Autocar’s 2005 test of the Maserati Quattroporte. I am following the magazine’s lead on this one, I would love to tell you that I would go for the Maserati but, the truth is, if it were my money, I would buy the BMW M5. What about you? #classccars

The best incarnation of the 240 but still a brick, if long living. I don’t like Granadas but this one looks good value and quick in this company. Rover needs to be V8. I like the Renault but going for the quirky Saab Turbo this time. What would you have? #classiccars

The Renault 20TS introduced the 2 litre engine to the very worthy car, when launched in 1977. I would probably be happy with any of the top three but the CX is undoubtedly the most interesting and is my choice here. Which would be your choice? #classiccars

In January 1985 Motor found the Citroen BX 19GT a little lacking in pace and refinement in this road test. I am not sure I ever thought I would say this but I would have the Maestro from this list with an honourable mention to the Cavalier. Which would you choose? #classiccars

The Alfa 155 was launched in 1992 under Fiat ownership but was developed prior. It replaced the rear drive 75 with a FWD format. The V6 engine, tested here by Autocar, was to die for, the car, disappointing. I would save up for the RWD BMW, what would you choose? #classicars

Motor struggled with a list of rivals for the TVR350i. I think they left off the 911 price because they were embarrassed comparing a £36k car (I checked) to a £16k car. I am going cheap with the Scimitar for the engine and lack of weight. What would you have? #classiccars

The series 3 XJ looked similar to the S2 to the casual observer but offered a smoothness difficult to match. It had to compete with the best Germany had to offer from Mercedes and BMW. Build quality sometimes questionable but still my pick, what about you? #classiccars

I always had a soft spot for Colt cars but more for their early adoption of turbo technology than this less that inspiring example. Nothing to get excited about here but really do not want the Princess or Cortina. True to form I will have the 132, what about you? #classiccars

The Escort RS Turbo burst onto the hot hatch scene in 1985 with a great look and performance and handling to match. At almost 20% more than rivals it’s too expensive for my taste, I would go for the awesome Strada Abarth, what about you? #classiccars

Motor got confused with their choice of rivals for the Mondial, tested it here in 1988. Difficult to choose, out of the sports cars I would have the Jalpa because it is beautiful and of the GTs, the 928, I would say Aston but too expensive. What would you have? #classiccars

The Fiat 128 3P, tested here by Motor in 1976, was a sports hatch of the 128. I desperately wanted one when I got my first car, it was cheap to insure, looked good and was quick. Sadly I could not find one so I am picking it now. What will you have? #classiccars

This page is from a 1988 group test, it is not an inspiring list but represents the decision options faced by thousands of families at the time. Sierra, probably the best seller, is last for me. My choice would be the 405, best engine and handling, what about you? #classiccars

The W123 Coupe tested here by Motor in 1977 had incredible build quality paid for with a high price, woeful performance and precious few extras. Toss up between the bottom two, I love the Scimitar but the Commodore is better. What about you? #classiccars

The Renault 12 was a worthy car but even at the time I thought it a little odd looking. These were the happy days when you could buy a good car for £2k. Predictably, when there is an Alfasud on the list that’s my pick, an Allegro costs more?? What would you have? #classiccars

It’s 1985 and the new Ford Granada has just been launched with the updated 2.9 litre engine. Would you choose it or one of the rivals below? I am not sure whether I would go for the BMW or Rover although Senator and CX GTi are good value. #classiccars #motormagazine

The original 6 series was a thing of great beauty but the second coming, to me, was an awkward looking car that I have never warmed to. I know it’s expensive but here I would have the Maserati, it’s beautiful, fast and has street cred. What would you have? #classiccars

This Motor magazine road test of the Fiat 127 Sport shows the junior hot hatches of 1979. Not a clear cut choice for me. I am tempted by the power of the Fiat, the engine of the Sunbeam and the R5 because they were great. Which would be your choice? #classiccars

I am a fan of Aston and think the premium worth it, if you can afford it. The Virage, however, is the exception, it looked odd and was too slow for the money. Here I am going for the Jag but I might just take the Nissan too, out of the change. What about you? #classiccars

The Ford Capri was very popular in the 70s and 80s despite unexciting technology. Personally I could never understand the car, I am tempted by the Datsun and the Alfa but I always wanted a Fiat 128 3P so that’s my pick. What would yours be? #classiccars

The W126 Mercedes-Benz 380SE tested here by Motor in 1982 was short on thrills but had a level of build quality not matched by other manufacturers. My choice here would be the Jag, if someone else was paying the bills or the Senator if I had to. What would you get? #classiccars

The list today comes from the 1988 test of the Rover Vitesse and is a difficult choice for me. For me, the Rover is last and the BMW too expensive but I could make a case for each of the remaining four. If pushed I would settle on the Alfa, what about you? #classiccars

Junior hot hatchbacks from 1993 compared today in Autocar’s test of the Corsa GSi. In 1992, after considering most of these, I chose the AX GTi, which I loved, at the time. Now I would be with Autocar and take the Clio. What about you? #classiccars

The Cavalier Coupe tested here by Motor in 1977 was a stylish version of the Manta that was good to drive and offered lively performance. I love the Lancia but it very hard to ignore the speed of the Capri. I think I would save for the Lancia 2.0, what about you? #classccars

The Volvo 244 was safe, long lasting and was in production for a generation from its launch in 1974 but was not an inspiring drive. Here the 505 and CX are tempting but I am going for the Rover for looks and speed, so long as it is not yellow, what about you? #classiccars

I would happily take any of the cars on the comparison page of this 1984 Motor test of the Renault Fuego Turbo but the Lancia HPE would be my first choice. I don’t care it is front wheel drive, unreliable and prone to rust, it is beautiful. What’s your choice? #classiccars

The Jag XJ6 was undoubtedly legendary but this version was old by 1978. I am really torn here, I know I should go with the solid quality of the W123 Merc but I loved the SD1 from the moment it was launched. Risky, I know, but it is my choice, what about you? #classiccars
