💼 How to hunt for game design jobs
💡 Detailed run through of the game design process
🖼️ Many handy resources
And more!
Loads of people were asking me what the difference between a game designer and producer were so here you go!
A quick intro to roles in game development. 👩💻
(This took all day... Please appreciate. 😂)
✨ Sup my game friends! ✨
I've made a GDD template cause someone on TikTok asked me to.
You can access it for free here:
Feel free to copy and use it to document your games! 💖
I think the idea that you can't be a great game designer unless you know how to code is a myth that we need to stop perpetuating. By saying these things you are ultimately gatekeeping the industry, whether consciously or not. Let me explain. 🧵👇🏽
TikTok to finally shut up all those dudes in my mentions saying you can't make *real* games with easy game making tools like Game Maker.
You absolutely can.
Follow your dreams, my peeps. ✨
I had this one in my drafts for half a year and never posted it because I thought it was too dark.
But with everything going on with Activision Blizzard this needs to see the light.
This is our reality. It needs to change.

I can't wait to be old and run a studio with other old women.
👵🏼👵🏿👵🏾 We'll be a grandma games studio. 👵🏻👵🏽👵🏿
Our studio will be in a greenhouse full of plants, where we'll make wholesome wise games and bake every Friday.

Went to an interview for an indie studio I was excited about. Met up at a cafe and I brought my portfolio. He tried to kiss me at the end. Turns out he thought it was a date. 🤦♀️
Woah! The super talented Wootha dropped 90GB, their life's work, for free. 😱
Royalty free, copyright free, free to use, edit, remix, recycle.
Can't wait to see what games come out of this! ✨
Their manifesto is pretty powerful too:
I guess it's time to do my yearly tweet about my game
👩🏽🦱 A Woman Goes To A Private Games Industry Party
A game about the things men have said to me while in the games industry.
When an 11 year old Roblox creator started sounding like a 40 year old jaded game developer and started drawing graphs in MS paint, I lost it.
It's fulfilling to express yourself in an age of easy content creation tools but this is not it.
Finally got a working prototype of something really complex the team and I had been working on for over a year.
My camera was on when I tested it for the first time and it captured this moment of unfiltered joy.
I'm a senior game designer and have been in the industry for almost a decade. I'm also Spanish and emigrated to the UK to pursue my career.
Don't assume because someone looks a certain way they're not a game dev!
#WhatAGameDevLooksLike
All this $70 billion Activision acquisition talk reminds me of this tiktok explaining how wealth is exponential.
Even the wealthiest among us are but specks of dust before a mountain.
Anyone else feel like as they age, they're getting better looking?
Like, despite media being so toxic about aging, particularly for women. I look better now that I'm nearing 30 than I ever did in my supposedly "prime" early 20s.
Can't wait to see what I look like nearing 40!
The Spanish games industry is fuming today and with reason.
A publisher has closed down and the directors have run off to Peru leaving a large trail of debt.
Buckle up because this is some real telenovela/fyre festival stuff.
Thread incoming 👇🏽
New TikTok series!
🎲 How to design a game. 🎲
Where I go through common game design concepts that you can apply to your games.
First up, design pillars.
The way I like to define it:
🎮 GAME DEVELOPER 🎮
An umbrella term for everyone who works on a game. From programmers to community managers.
✏️ GAME DESIGNER ✏️
A specific role within game development requiring a distinct skillset that focuses on the design of the game.
Let me talk for a moment about the narratives we tell around how game designers enter the industry.
Its just a theory but maybe there is some truth in it.
I burnt out super badly at age 25 because of this mentality.
Awards, lists and industry praise don't mean crap if you are working 12 hour days, 7 days a week, yet still can't pay rent.
I spent a whole month incapacitated in bed with multiple health issues. Not. Worth. It.
Kids in america be like "oh man if i don't create my magnus opus by age 25 I'll never be an artist" meanwhile i keep reading about legendary japanese game designers that are like "i was a ditch-digging metal-working salaryman for 30 years until someone told me i could make games"
Last week was difficult. To get through it I made this game about things men have said to me at industry events.
Being a woman in this industry is hard.
I wish more people in this industry truly understood that good games are made by happy teams.
Our fixation on and glorification of auteurs is bad for all of us.
People are complex.
All the victims were right to come out and call out their abusers. Don't go blaming them for murder.
I hope women will continue to speak truth to power. I hope this isn't used to silence us.
A perfect illustration of how:
🙃 There aren't enough junior and entry positions in games
💸 Studios don't want to invest in training
👋🏼 A lot of people leave before making it to senior and lead
💀 There is no standard for what junior/associate/senior/lead/etc even means
This is my favourite achievement of 2020.
Ever since I started doing educational TikToks about the games industry, my followers rose to nearly 30k on 3 months.
And the best bit: over half of them are girls! 💪🏼
Diversifying the games industry, one TikTok at a time.
A game design degree is NECESSARY if you:
🙋🏽♀️ Are a marginalised identity in games
🔗 Don't have connections in the industry
✈ Want to move countries
📚 Want to learn effectively
Game design degrees are only going to become more vital as time goes on.
Dunno who needs to hear this but...
👏Don't👏Spend👏Money👏On👏A👏Game👏Design👏Degree👏
Download Unreal, find a mentor, teach yourself, join a mod team, make something.
But chucking 75 grand at school for a game design degree isn't it.
I have one, hindsight is 20/20 💜🚀
It makes my heart sink every time I see a game that has diverse characters and themes. Then you look at the team and it's mostly white men.
Please... we need diversity in hiring and financing, not just in content.
I think it was
@Vialixia
who once said buying an NFT item and expecting to use it in all your favourite games is the same as buying a recipe and expecting every restaurant to make it for you.
Perfect analogy.
There were loads of aspiring game developers in my TikTok mentions talking about how the industry has a crunch problem.
It does, but I thought I'd clarify a few things...
Unity now comes with a free visual scriptwriting tool.
🙀🙀🙀
This is a ✨HUGE deal✨ for game designers and aspiring developers.
You'll be able to make professional games without writing a single line of code.

What are some red flags you look out for when job hunting?
Things that instantly make you nope out of an application or interview?
I often hear people asking:
😅🤣😊☺️😋🤪
How do you express complex human experiences and emotions through game mechanics?
🤔😳😣😢😭😍
And it's difficult... but some game designers have already been figuring this out and documenting it.
A little thread.
Something that worries me a lot about the games industry is how many jobs just aren't advertised.
All roles I've ever held as a game designer have been via recommendation or head hunting.
How are aspiring game designers meant to compete with that?
🤔

Pretty proud to have one of my games in this bundle. Now go buy! 👇🏼

Yes!!! 😭💖😭💖😭💖
Game devs! ✨
How did you fund your first prototype BEFORE getting publisher funding or investment?
Especially interested in hearing candid answers from studios led by white men.
So many marginalised devs in my timeline and DMs rn who are baffled by how you do it.
What is your job now and what A-Levels and/or uni course did you do?
I'm a ✨game designer✨.

Talking to different studios, I've realised some don't do structured ideation sessions.
This can cause unproductive disagreements in a team and is less effective at finding ideas.
Let me explain what structured ideation sessions are and how to run them. 🧵
A (super summarised) retelling of my journey as a game designer.
Wanted to share that there is no one route into the industry and it can come with a lot of ups and downs.
But we all eventually get there in the end! 💖
👏🏽 Learning game design theory will make you a better game designer. 👏🏽
And I'm not talking about reading a few articles on gamasutra, I'm taking hardcore academia.
📚
Going to go private overnight cause some g*merg*ter crawled out of 2014 and got angry that I, a woman, made a gentle dig at gamer culture.
He retweeted me to his 8k followers and I can't be bothered to spend any more time blocking fragile men on temper tantrums.
Loads of people were asking me what the difference between a game designer and producer were so here you go!
A quick intro to roles in game development. 👩💻
(This took all day... Please appreciate. 😂)
We need to start being more critical of games, as an industry.
Yes, we're all friends and we know what an incredible feat making a game is.
But we need to start criticising each other's work more openly and fairly.
Otherwise this industry will never mature.
Sony removing and refunding Cyberpunk leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
I really hope AAA execs take this as a lesson to never crunch.
But I really feel for the devs who've had to deal with the crunch, gamer harassment and will now bear the grunt of this decision.
🎲 GAME DESIGN HACK 🎲
Need to quickly prototype a narrative game with characters for testing purposes?
Use Fungus with Picrew.
Create your character sprites in Picrew then plug them into Fungus and tada, you have a playable prototype in minutes.
