Yahya Haig, School Principal, was held and tortured by Houthis in an ancient castle in Hodeida. "Before they hang you, they tell you to do a specific exercise, to make you tired and feel the pain more. They ask you to sit down and stand up for 1,000 or 2,000 times."

The Houthis have refused to release positive test results and intimidated medical staff, journalists and families who try to speak out about cases. Doctors and local health officials said they believed many people are dying of COVID-19 in their homes, undocumented.
U.N. officials said the Houthis’ control of information about the spread of suspected COVID-19 cases has hampered their response. As long as the Houthis do not officially acknowledge cases, the U.N. cannot rally global donors to send supplies to tackle the outbreak.

Hussein had to dress in an abaya to hide from the RSF and allied militias looking for Masalit men to kill. Hussein said he saw the bodies of young men, many his age, lying in the street, some with their hands tied behind their backs and gunshot wounds to the head.
Farouk saved lives inside Hodeida castle, despite his own torture and detention for no crime except that he treated a wounded detainee who was brought to his health center bleeding. Now he lives in a displaced camp, with no support from the government.

Extreme measures: In West Darfur, farmers whose lands were plundered by the RSF have eaten the seeds they bought for planting. In the Kordofan region, people have sold their furniture and clothes. In Khartoum, residents under siege picked leaves and boiled and eaten them.
In Sanaa, medical staffers said they are under surveillance by Houthis and can’t speak about what they see inside health centers. In Aden, many medical facilities in Aden have closed as staffers flee or simply turn patients away.
