Life Update: I've loved leading the PAIR team these past 18 months, but I've also missed having time to be hands-on with research, so I'll be transitioning to Google Brain in September, where I'll focus on fundamental research in Human-Computer Interaction and Human-Centered AI.
So excited to finally receive this today! (Though also still sad there was no
#chi2020
in Hawaii!) (And grateful to fellow 2020 CHI Academy inductee Steven Drucker for getting this the "last mile" to my house after a mail mix-up!)
I'm excited to announce that
@minsuk_chang
will be joining the
@GoogleAI
PAIR team next month as a Research Scientist, growing our research expertise in Human-AI Interaction!
Grad students in
#CS
and other computing fields (including
#HCI
) - you need to have a web page with info about your thesis work, your publications, project videos, & other portfolio items, and CV. Amazed by how many internship applicants lack a basic web page.
The PAIR (People + AI) team at

folks think the COVID-19 crisis and resulting increase in remote work will be the start of CS departments hiring fewer

I’m shocked how many people have replied to imply someone doesn’t deserve a PhD if they don’t want to do research 24/7. I stuck to a 40 hour work week during grad school and then enjoyed outside interests. This is a very reasonable approach that can lead to a very successful PhD.
Am looking for suggestions of good
#HCI
papers to read - do people have favorite CHI, CSCW, ASSETS, or UIST papers from this past year or coming year that they'd recommend? Am most interested in papers about the intersection of HCI and
#AI
, FATE topics, and AI for

work

I kid you not. But that must be the bar they use for the male candidates, too, because I'm sure 100% of their senior male faculty have Turing Awards, right?
Wow! So glad to see this change! It is something

,
@colegleason
, and I have been suggesting for a while, reducing the barrier to adding alt text to tweets:
Adding descriptions to images is a great way to include everyone in your conversation. These descriptions, aka alt-text, enable folks who use screen readers to interpret images in Tweets. Starting today, you no longer need a setting to add alt text and it's available on 📱 & 💻.

I literally get one email a week from well-intentioned but poorly informed techies making either a glove app or an vision-based app that recognizes a tiny number of individual signs - please read to understand why the premise of these apps is broken
Folks. Sign language is more than hands. More than fingers. More than hand shapes. It’s body, face, position...
A glove will never ‘translate’ sign language in a way that is beneficial to the deaf.
Fellow nerds, when designing, remember this: “nothing about us, without us.”

So excited to see
