Oh, nothing. Just a play where Tyrann Mathieu fakes a blitz, drops to cover Deshaun Watson's first read, then covers his second read, then forces the scramble out of bounds.
Doesn't get credit for any stat here but holy crap.
The only problem with paying Patrick Mahomes $40 million a year is if he gets hurt the Chiefs are screwed.
Also: if Patrick Mahomes is making $30,000 and gets hurt the Chiefs are screwed.
If you are a reasonable human and upset by young men celebrating the accomplishment of their lives with alcohol please state your case for both why you’re upset and provide proof that you are otherwise a reasonable human.
LeSean McCoy: "We undefeated! Y'all, I haven't been undefeated in ... man, I don't even know. Y'all take it for granted."
Jeff Allen: "We used to it, bruh."
Darrel Williams: "Big facts."
Frank Clark said the division title "don't mean shit," called himself the "crazy man with the gold hair," and then I believe compared himself to a TV character I've never heard of.
Long live Frank Clark.
Frank Clark was asked if he had a message for Tom Brady: "I don't have anything to say to him, honestly. I'll see his ass on Sunday at the Super Bowl."
No joke, the first quarter was as loud as I can remember the Coliseum in 10 years coming here. They are now booing the Raiders.
Patrick Mahomes is mean.
Chris Jones is going to get criticized by some for wanting what he's worth after playing for much less. He's been a model professional in attitude and performance, and the Chiefs wouldn't have won the Super Bowl without him.
Hard to criticize him for wanting what he's earned.
Andy Reid was asked about the Chris Jones roughing the passer call: "I saw our quarterback from play 27 on get hits that were way worse than that that weren't called." This is play 27:
More than anyone else, Alex Gordon personified the Royals' climb from punchline to parade.
When it's built, the statue should be him rounding first base, pointing to the sky, after hitting Familia's quick-pitch sinker over the centerfield wall.
Two years ago, when the Chiefs lost to the Bucs, Terez told Brett Veach he’d someday write about how the Chiefs’ next Super Bowl title began with that loss.
Wild mix of emotions remembering that one.
Last thing on Mahomes until the MRI:
Dr. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif said a key is how quickly the kneecap is put back. There's a lot of tension on those tendons, so the time to put it back in place is a big factor in swelling. Chiefs staff got to him quickly.
Patrick Mahomes should be allowed to:
- sleep
- eat
- workout with EMT on hand
- watch film safe distance from screen
- lay in cryo chamber
That's the whole list. If you want freedom, don't win MVP in your first year for a team whose previous best drafted QB was Steve Fuller.
Doing this job with and for you has been a joy. Thank you a million times.
Stepping in for two legendary sports columnists at the Star wasn't enough, so now I'll do it for the legendary
@Swanee54
with the Royals.
If the Chiefs and Patriots play Tuesday a really easy solution to the problem of the Chiefs having 3 games in 10 days would be to move Chiefs-Bills from a Thursday to Saturday or Sunday but that would require caring about player safety so
Charvarius Ward, undrafted in 2018 and traded for a backup lineman, finished his first full season as a starter giving up one touchdown and two interceptions in 631 coverage snaps, according to
@PFF
.
QBs completed 48 percent with a 67.3 rating against him.
Dustin Colquitt is a gem of a man, beloved and respected teammate, and damn good punter. Not sure I’ve ever known someone who so perfectly balanced taking his job seriously, but not himself.
Looking forward to his ring of honor ceremony.
Charvarius Ward was held back in kindergarten and spent part of his childhood in a wheelchair. Now, he’s starting at cornerback for the Chiefs, one win from the Super Bowl.
“Been coaching 20 years. Then I find this kid just laying on the couch.”
Fan sentiment largely turned on Eric Berry this past season. That’s natural. But whether it’s for a game or his ring of honor ceremony the next time he’s at Arrowhead it will erupt. Shame he didn’t have more playoff success. He’ll be loved forever.
Dear twitter:
I get it. People shouldn’t throw snowballs. But the next snow game with no snowballs will be the first. Maybe don’t act like a new moral low point was found yesterday.
With love,
Me
In the last 24 hours, this guy entertained a family going through a hard time, added juice to Lo Cain’s night, threw out the league’s best base stealer, took a pitch off his calf, and had five hits including a 462-foot homer that dented a wall.
Angel Hernandez’s general incompetence creates many problems in baseball games, particularly baseball games with him behind home plate the day after he generally sucks.
This is always a bit strange. Is Mahomes a better QB if the Chiefs have a clue on the 2 pt conversion vs the Chargers, or if Sorensen can cover a TE vs the Rams, or Gronk isn’t left 1-on-1 against a practice squad guy?

Had to happen. Bob Sutton is a good man, and smart coach, but the time had come. He's taken a lot of abuse the last few years and handled it with class. The NFL is about results, so people don't care about that stuff as much, but it should be said. I'll miss talking with him.
Mitchell Schwartz and Eric Fisher were enormous parts of the Chiefs’ success. Consistent, tough, diligent, both should be in the ring of honor someday.
The world’s first stadium built for a women’s professional team will be in downtown Kansas City.
KC NWSL owners Angie and Chris Long will say more this afternoon, but here’s what I got from them for now:
New rule: if your dream job offered you millions, and you turned it down for like $5,000 per year and free rent, you can say whatever you want about college athletes going pro. Otherwise, maybe sit this one out.
Overwhelmed. Grateful. This is too much. You all are too much. I owe Kansas City much of what's right in my life. Just struggling with the words. You are the best. I owe so many of you so much. Please don't make me pay it all back.
You know that Eric Berry beat cancer, and then recovered to All-Pro form in the NFL.
Then he ghosted, not talking publicly for years, until now:
On everything from a potential return to his love of cars and the advice he got from a stranger in KC.
Mom would’ve been 74 today.
She’d be terrified of Covid, but would’ve found a way to grow. New meals to try, new books to read, something.
She’d think my hair is too short, and pretend to like my beard. She’d be obsessed with her grandsons.
She’d be proud of our family.
Lots of complaints about the refs, but come on. The Chiefs have stunk. This is like complaining the fire department takes too long after you lit the match.
Best player on the best Royals team of all-time. The score from first on Hosmer's single in Game 6 is one of the most exhilarating plays you will ever see. And every day in the big leagues he's walked around like his feet are crumbling in real time. Legend.
Some personal news: over the weekend our 5 year old had his first ever football take.
"The Broncos' quarterback is better handing off than throwing."
I wept with pride.
"A solution to the pandemic, one expert said, isn’t a perfectly effective vaccine, but a vaccination campaign that can reach large portions of the population quickly — like baseball team that wins with steady base hits and bunts, not just home runs."
Ok, fine. The Chiefs traded Marcus Peters. Time to move on and think about how they can improve. I have an idea: they need a young, badass cornerback who can create turnovers.
So if the Chiefs win tomorrow all they have to do to get to the Super Bowl is stop the run against Derrick Henry lol this is a good time to be a sports columnist in Kansas City.
Laurent Duvernay-Tardif has started a masters in public health at Harvard. Because he didn’t have enough else going on between the frontline of Covid and working back to the NFL in his second language.
He is only borderline human.
@heathcummingssr
Home run in like 8th grade. As I stepped on the plate I smiled at this girl I’d liked in the stands. We kissed that night. She is now my wife.
League sources believe Chiefs' OC Eric Bieniemy will emerge as a head-coaching candidate for USC. Bieniemy is from Southern California and has told confidantes in the past, that USC is one of the only college jobs that might interest him.
If this was a player Roger Goodell would strap him to a rocket and shoot him directly into the sun. Many players will be curious how he handles a powerful owner. Sex trafficking is beyond awful.
Patrick Mahomes has thrown for 46 fewer yards than Joe Montana did in two seasons with the Chiefs. He's pacing to be the franchise's career touchdown leader in four years and yards in five, at which point he would be 28 years old and theoretically reaching his career prime.
Tyreek Hill, on his way off the last Zoom before the Super Bowl, shared a favorite Bible verse, promoted his YouTube channel, and grabbed his necklace toward the camera: "See this gold chain? It's fake."
3 takeaways from Chiefs practice today:
- They continue to be cautious with Tyreek Hill, who did some individual work.
- Juan Thornhill is progressing.
- Clyde Edwards-Helaire is going to be a star.
