✏️ I wrote a little post about how we designed and shipped blended diffs in
@pierredotco
. If you haven't seen them yet, def give it a read—we're working to reimagine how we build products and a better diff experience is just a small (and rad!) step.
Hey friends—wanted to share something. On Dec 5, I had a massive heart attack that put me in the hospital for two weeks. The first week I was in a medically induced coma in the ICU, frozen Han Solo style to preserve my mind and body. No one knew if I’d still be me when I woke up.
Apple Maps just hits different at this point, especially with this awful new Google Maps color scheme rolling out. Compare place views and directions...
Has anyone built the opposite of code linters? Instead of only telling me all the stuff I did wrong, tell me all the stuff I did right so I'm excited to keep going :D.
Anyone else wishing VS Code went this direction for their Big Sur icon update? Threw it together in Figma over the weekend. Too many apps on white squares now.
After more than 10 years
@github
, today is my last day as a Hubber. Thankful for all I was able to ship, and even more thankful for an epic decade of design, code, and friends I made along the way. Excited for what comes next!
Moral of the story? Talk to you doctors more, get more tests done, know your family’s medical history, do your physical, ask more questions, and be as safe and healthy as you can. It’s cliche to say, but it could very well save your life. ❤️
Nearly three years of personal open source work and energy has gone into this thing. Words cannot express how happy I am that it’s out. Now, on to v4.1!
Preview of the expanded color system coming to Bootstrap v5! Sass unfortunately makes this a very manual process because we cannot dynamically generate variables (sidenote: no classes planned for all these, just variables).
Hard to believe I've been working on Bootstrap for more than a decade! Still love getting to work on it. Open source can be an intense ride, but 10 years later and through all the ups and downs, it’s still worth it. Thanks for starting it with me,
@fat
!
🎉🎂 Happy birthday, Bootstrap!
Ten years ago today, we shipped the very first version of Bootstrap. What an absolutely incredible ride it’s been. Thanks to all the maintainers, contributors, and everyone who built with Bootstrap along the way.
For the first time ever,
@GitHub
has put a banner on nearly every page of our site for US-based users and logged out visitors. Proud that it's for something as important as
#netneutrality
.
Still continually amazed at all the places Bootstrap gets used. My online rent portal, the California DMV, the US Postal Service—always brings a smile to my face.
I really miss the macOS app toolbar and settings icons of yesteryear. So much detail and delight in each one. Opening a settings pane felt like a gift every time.
I’m here because of my amazing wife and the outpouring of love and support through all of this from our friends and family. Most of all, I’m incredibly thankful for all the strangers, EMTs, nurses, and doctors who helped save my life.
Today’s Bootstrap release was nearly seven months in the making thanks to my heart attack, so this is a hugely meaningful ship. Definitely feeling rusty shipping again. 😅 Onward to the next one!
🎉 Bootstrap v5.2.0-beta1 has arrived! This is a massive update with so much to love: redesigned docs w/ search and version picker, CSS variables for every component, responsive offcanvas, new helpers and utilities, a blog redesign, and more!
Okay nerds, is this too much for a possible Bootstrap logo? I was hyped about it months ago, but got worried and self conscious that it was too presumptuous or misleading given the obvious inspiration from the HTML and CSS shield logos. Thoughts?
Bootstrap 5's first alpha has landed! We've dropped jQuery, dropped IE10 and IE11 support, added a new utilities API, redesigned our docs, improved our grid, redesigned our forms, and oh hey we're sporting a new logo, too!
Just realized Bootstrap 4 was part of the the Mars helicopter mission! 😻 Wonder if it was used for the launch or is actually on Mars right now—either way, so cool. Such an awesome GitHub profile badge, too!
🚢 Shipped Code Guide v4 today with a new logo, refreshed design, and modernized some HTML and CSS rules. Have a read and let me know what else should be added—I’m sure there’s tons missing. Thinking a JS section would be a fun update.
Good news is I have a new stent in my heart and I'm recovering well. I've been slowly dipping back into Bootstrap to make sure I can still design and code (I can!), but will be laying low online and off work for awhile still.
Everything that needed to happen to save me, happened. I'm incredibly lucky my wife found me immediately, that she called 911, that the neighbors she screamed for gave me CPR, that the EMTs came in minutes, and that the hospital was 10 mins away with an amazing cardiology team.
One more time, we're gonna celebrate—Bootstrap 5 has officially arrived! New accordion and offcanvas components, no more jQuery, no more IE, RTL support, new utilities and utilities API, new examples, new docs, and so much more!
I woke up on my birthday on Dec 12 to my wife telling me what had happened. I had just married her a month earlier, and we had just spent two weeks in the middle of nowhere for our honeymoon. Had it all happened there, with no hospital, I probably wouldn’t be here today.
Two years ago this week! 🫀❤️
Heart is doing great, even recovering some since the heart attack. On amazing meds that are keeping my numbers in check. Modern science is honestly a miracle.

We’re hiring a new Shop Program Manager
@github
to help us manage our global retail and internal merchandise and more. Take a look and apply if you think you’re a fit!

Was hesitant to make the change, but digging it thus far—y'all should try out the MonoLisa font if you can. Adds just the right amount of personality to your editor.
Icons are often an underrated piece of a product's brand and personality, so I really wanted to get them right with
@heypierreo
. Cranking out these ~100 icons has been a ton of fun, especially around the evolving shape language. Definitely room for improvement, but oh so nice! 🤗
The heart attack I had is known as "The Widowmaker" because of rather obvious reasons. Doctors still aren't sure what caused it, but most are aligned on it being genetic. I was eating great, in the best shape of my life, and not under any stress.
Use Keynote? Don't forget View > Show Object List for getting that layer view of everything in your slides. Makes complex layouts so much easier to work with.
Shoutout
@_aguillaume
for showing me the way months ago!
Worked on these Bootstrap Icons for a long time and am excited to share the first alpha release. Already have dozens more designed for future releases, and am excited to redraw a lot of existing ones too :D.
Double ship day! Introducing Bootstrap Icons, our very first open source SVG icon set designed to work with Bootstrap and any other project you might have. Read all about our first alpha release!
🥳 Very exciting news—introducing
@heypierreco
! A few months ago our small team set out to build a brand new developer platform for hosting, reviewing, discussing, and shipping code. We're stoked about it, and we'd love your help for our alpha!
👋 We're reimagining industry-old primitives for a new developer platform for teams to build and ship software.
🌳 Branches, not pull requests

New homepage day! 🥳 We're finally showing off more of
@heypierreco
and sharing a sense of where we're taking this thing. Can't wait to show off more and hear what y'all think! Join our Discord to follow along and get early access!
Bootstrap v4.5.0 is out with new user-select utilities, zipped and downloadable examples, dependency updates, tons of bug fixes, and a refreshed homepage!
Been balancing the "constant on" of working from home by working on open source whenever I can, and I just crossed over 500 icons made for Bootstrap Icons! Getting there!
Mechanical keyboard nerds—I want to get a high quality GitHub keycap set and a complete keyboard (87-key max) in The GitHub Shop. Who’s the best partner to work with out there?
Zed has arrived!
It’s honestly mind blowing how fast it is. I had the chance to work with this team—they’re Atom and GitHub alums!—on their new brand and website. They’re all in on building the fastest multiplayer editor out there. ⚡️👨🏻💻
Congrats on the launch!
Yes, Biden isn’t the best Democrats can give, but he’s infinitely better than Trump. We can’t do four more years of this imbecile. Never been clearer that this is a battle for our future and our national identity.
Can anybody find me some icons to love?
The latest release of Bootstrap Icons is here with over 530 icons (220 brand new ones!), dozens of redrawn icons, a new 16x16 viewBox, and icon permalink pages! Go get 'em.
I haven't done enough, but donating and speaking up feels like a meaningful start. Just sent a total of $10k to a handful of black nonprofits and the ACLU. Donate, listen, amplify, and vote—there's an abundance of resources being shared. Black lives matter.
Finally took Bootstrap Icons stable after five alphas with over 1,100 icons! Designing icons has been a bright spot these last few months for sure. Tons of fun :).
Bootstrap Icons v1.0.0 is officially out! Get your hands on our first stable release, complete with 1,120 icons (up from 200 in our first alpha!) all ready for you to use and customize. Huge labor of love and a ton of fun to work on—hope you enjoy! :D
Hi 👋
I made a simple tool to generate an image of all your Github contributions! So you can tweet it ✨
Check it out here:
Disclaimer: It’s still very raw. Just wanted something for myself, but feel free to send PRs and submit issues ♥️
Not sure I'll ever get tired of drawing icons—just shipped ~300 more to Bootstrap Icons :D. Using Figma for it has definitely helped my vector learning curve.
(Knock on wood for doing a Friday release!)
Don't stop us now—Bootstrap Icons Alpha 5 is here! A brand new SVG sprite, nearly 300 new icons, and dozens of improvements to existing icons, docs, and build tooling.
See what's new and find out what's coming in our next release, v1.0.0 stable!
Took
@tobiasahlin
's awesome layered box-shadow idea and turned it into a Sass mixin to see if I could make something more customizable by shadow size, including a multiplier for diffusing further. 90% there maybe? Feedback very much welcome.
Prepping a big update to my in the next couple weeks with refreshed content (some stuff is outdated), updated design, and some more under the hood maintenance. Needs some love yet, but liking the direction.
Took our time on this one and still wish we took even longer. Even debated calling this a v6 release, but ultimately wanted to just get it out there so we can ship and iterate :). Happy holidays everyone!
Closing out the year with a big new release, v5.3.0-alpha1! Get your hands on the pre-release with color modes, expanded color palette, new utilities, and more!
Wishing everyone an amazing holiday break and a Happy New Year! Catch y’all in 2023 🎉🥂💜
Any freelance web designers available for a project? Have a friend looking for someone to help a team workup a new marketing site. Details are slim, would love to make introductions if interest and timing work for you. DMs open!
With icons in
@pierredotco
, I used shapes to differentiate groups. Status icons—in progress, merged, in review—are circles. Diff icons—modified, added, deleted, moved—are squircles.
Side note: that rounded caps on dashed circle suck, but I'd like to fix that sometime.
Writing docs—and the code that powers them!—is always a fun project. After being heads down for a couple weeks, we've shipped all new docs for
@pierredotco
. MDX galore and some fun design elements. Read all about it and check 'em out at .
New 13” MacBook Pro, or the 16”? Are non-Intel graphics that big of a boost during most design/dev tasks? With working from home more, it feels like 16” is the better workhorse here for the future.
As always,
@brian_lovin
with the knowledge.
Have fun with it all, sure! But honestly, most new landing pages are just boring, even with the flashy scrolls, gradients, and animations. I think we're starting to become numb to it...
We just shipped blended diffs on
@pierredotco
!
Blended diffs replace stacked and split diffs. With a lighter design, focus on a file's final state, AI summaries for hidden deletions, and more, they reduce time to review and improve code comprehension. 💥
We’re moving the Bootstrap Slack community back to GitHub to go all in on Discussions. Better tools, indexable and searchable history, closer to the code, and a less divider community. Can’t wait!
👋🏼 We’ve made the difficult decision to shut down our community Slack and transition all conversations to the Discussions tab of our main GitHub repo by Aug 31, 2022. Slack just doesn’t scale to a community of 44,000+ members. Moderation, spam control, and cost are all factors.
Bootstrap 5 Beta 1 is here with RTL (and some renamed classes to better support it), new toast positioning, Popper.js v2, namespaced data attributes, states in our utilities API, and more. From here out, no more breaking changes!
Every now and then the Silk famfamfam icon set pops back into my head. So many icons, so widely used, so well designed. (Who’s got the retina versions? :D)
Been messing around with creating a starter kit for compiling and customizing Bootstrap via npm. Mostly to make sure I know how folks use Bootstrap, but also to test out new things in the future ;). Would love feedback and help!
I’ve avoided talking about it a lot here, but just to be clear, Trump is a liar, sociopath, sex offender, racist, sexist, narcissist, and all around terrible example of humanity. Please vote and help get him and the GOP out before more harm is done.
