I made an ARKit face filter that will let me sing

dubstep drops. Here's my attempt at the growl sounds from Promises - Skrillex & Nero Remix. Updoot if you'd use this 😂😂

Hey GDC Folks! If you're working on a VR/AR project and would like to add multiplayer, I'd love to chat. I'm planning to release the multiplayer plugin we use at
@normalvr
. Looking for interesting projects to include in our private alpha to help us shape the API :) (DMs open!)
Working on a shader that can separate my hands out of the camera feed. I’m hoping I can use it to make my hands render on top of virtual objects in AR.

Half + Half is the culmination of almost four years of research at Normal. We’ve spent so much time thinking about what makes a multiplayer experience great. And it comes out tomorrow :)
almost 10 years ago! I snuck into the press / exec section after the WWDC keynote and showed Forstall an iPhone running Android. He wasn’t a huge fan to say the least 😅😅 Got this nice picture at the bash tho 😂😂
I’m still in love with
@zachlieberman
’s 2D light reflection experiments. I took a minute to try reflecting rays in AR. def needs a lot of work, but it‘s a cool start :)

Half + Half was designed to be a space my mom and I could enjoy together. I love hearing stories like this. VR is a great way to make the distance feel a little smaller :’)
Oculus Quest is the headset I've been waiting for since I started Normal. I took some time this weekend to write up why I believe Oculus Quest is the only VR headset you should care about. Let me know what you all think :)

Here's what my AR gestures look like
This type of interaction should be included with Unity, even for regular 2D apps that need basic pan/rotate/pinch. making gestures like this requires me to rewrite the entire touch / gesture stack from scratch which is unreal.
I saw a lot of XR folks were affected by the Meta layoffs :(
If you want to keep working in the space, DM me, we'd love to have you at Normal!
Also, I'd really appreciate a RT on this to get the word out. I'm not as active on twitter as I used to be 😅😅
My Quest is always dead. It drives me absolutely crazy. I've got the extended battery. I can never play with friends because theirs are always dead too...
I swear this is the biggest barrier to entry for VR lol.
Does anyone else have this issue?
I was walking around my house with a VR headset on and the pass-through cameras enabled. I caught sight of myself in a mirror. Let me tell you, seeing yourself in the mirror, but not being able see your own eyes is terrifying.
My decade:
- Made an app for the first iPhone
- Graduated high school
- Made an app with Björk
- Made an app with Lady Gaga
- Björk: Biophilia acquired by the MoMA
- Sold my first company to Google
- Started Normal VR
- Launched Half + Half on Quest
Absolutely wild =)
It’s wild to think that we shipped a game at Normal and most of the team has never met in-person. We’ve only ever worked together in VR. There are people on the team that I haven’t even met in real life =P
This is one of my favorite spaces in Half + Half. It’s Hide + Seek, but people hiding are tiny, and people seeking are huge :)))
Can’t wait! Half + Half comes out September 12th for Oculus Quest + Rift
Did the hat clips + no light seal mod and it’s a million times better. No weight on my face. Having Peripheral vision feels great. And the field of view is now /incredibly/ wide.
Remotely interested in what we’re building at Normal? Come work with us remotely!
Our whole team collaborates using our own internal multiplayer tools :)
We’re seeking a Web Developer to join the team at Normal. If that sounds like you, we’d love to say hi! Reach out at jobs
@normalvr
.com, and check our jobs page for more details.
Last year I wrote about how everyone at Normal uses VR to work remotely. If you’re a VR dev working from home now, I highly recommend giving this a shot:
When I first started Normal, my goal was to see how VR would fit into our daily lives. How it would replace the hours we already spend on screens instead of eating into the time we don’t. Multiplayer VR offers a glimpse into how that’s going to happen.
As a developer the Quest has entirely replaced all of my other VR headsets. I went from having a desk covered in headsets and cables to just a single headset and a single cable w/ Oculus Link.
about to announce some cool new work at
@normalvr
so I dusted off our mixed reality capture app. here's a test shot of me blobbing in the studio :)

Just about every time I have a good idea for Vision Pro. Some bogus API limitation prevents me from building it.
I /love/ that you can run multiple apps side by side, but to access any ARKit features, I lose the ability to participate in multitasking...
Are you shipping a multiplayer game with a custom game server in the next year?
We're beta testing Normcore scalable game server hosting.
We use our existing scale to get $0.05/GB with tiers down to $0.02/GB ( vs $0.14/GB for other services )

research that involves the Wii—yes, the 2006 Nintendo game console!
There are thousands of papers that used the Wii in novel, sometimes weird, research applications & I've been digging through a few of them so here's a thread!
Oculus Quest launches today! It’s incredibly impressive and the first standalone headset with 6dof head + hands. If you’re a developer, this is the only headset I think you should care about:
I created an instagram face filter!! It’s a recreation of the original photo booth app. Follow me on instagram and it will show up in your list of filters :)
Implemented a gamepad driver at
@Dynamicland1
. To install it, you literally just put it on the table and other pages can use gamepads now. I love this so much 😍😍😍😍
underrated piece of business advice: pay anyone who invoices you quickly (~1 week). this is your relationship with someone else. treat them how you want to be treated. even if they were the worst client ever, pay everyone on time!
As I use more AI tools, the more I don't want AI tools that magically output the answer. I want AI tools that drive my tools for me so I can interrupt it at any point and fix anything it does wrong.
Create the thing piece by piece so I can course-correct as necessary.
It’s a lot of things, but at a high level:
1. you look at the ball, not the world. 2. you grab the world to move, but it’s not 1:1, it’s the 1st derivative which lowers instantaneous acceleration significantly. 3. No close visual landmarks. 4. “Perfect” deceleration (see reply)

Gotta spill the beans!! 🤩 I get sick easily in VR and Nock was totally fine for me! Is it the stationary skybox that engulfs most of your view? Maybe the lack of textured patterns?
It’s unreal to see Half + Half packed with people 24/7. Many people have messaged me to say “Half + Half feels like the first game that was made for me” :’)
It seems like all other VR titles target 18-35yo men. It’s nice to feel like it might not be that way forever :)
For years now people have asked when they'll get to try out Wanda and the spaces we've created at Normal. Only a few more days!
Half + Half is coming to Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift this Thursday :))))
Normcore now supports visionOS!
No changes required. If you're using Normcore in your XR app already, export your Unity project for visionOS and everything works out of the box :)
That said, fuck these lists. My mom died this year, and I’d give up all of this to have her back. Your accomplishments don’t make you who you are. You shouldn’t compare yourself to others for validation.
Draw a sticky note on an iPad and then pull it out into the AR world. I added little spring force and try to make the transition feel like pulling a physical note out of a book. Tested on a 6-year-old boy, he can definitely get it. :D
