Just finished the second Vergani Cup by scoring my last Grandmaster norm to become a Grandmaster! I wasn't sure what to expect after 9 months of absence from classical chess, but it was difficult to imagine this happening. Lifegoal achieved!
Congratulations to the man of the moment
@jordenvforeest
! It has been wonderful to experience it from so closeby, not only as your second but as your friend as well. Looking forward to your next achievements!
Alireza Firouzja seems to have made the mistake of playing 250 30-second games last night. 500 15-second games would have given him more training games in the same time frame.
Became shared 2nd in the Serbia Open tournament after a strong finish. Was pretty happy with my play, apart from the mate in 2 blunder from game 3😅 Congrats to
@NihalSarin
on yet another tournament victory!
Maybe we can keep on hosting candidates tournaments until Firouzja wins. The winner of the candidates will simply qualify for the next one and the cycle starts again.
Managed to survive the knockout phase of the Dutch championships to qualify for the final 4 which will take place later in November. Also crossed 2600 for the first time✅
Playing two tournaments in a row in Portugal was going to be tough, and having little energy left after the first one did not leave me with too much hopes for the second. However, in the end I had the best tournament of my career to win the Guimarães open with 8 out of 9!
It is great to be playing chess OTB again. Even though it wasn't easy to get to the Vergani Cup, it was definitely worth it! Scored my second Grandmaster norm in the first event, and just played one of the coolest games I have had which the engine sometimes fails to understand:
Scored my 3rd 7/9 in a row, but this time it was enough to win the 44th Ikaros tournament! Will go into hibernation mode for a month now before I will return to the board in Portugal.
Update for Anish: Happy to have finished 2nd in Venice with 7/9 to pick up some rating. Turns out you do not only get a free point if your opponent forfeits, but you also get your amount of points added to your buchholz instead of who you were about to face 🧐 Next up: Belgrade
Congratulations to
@rpragchess
! His fighting spirit showed in the last round. Having a worse tiebreak won't matter when you simply have more wins. Can look back decently satisfied at my own tournament although this will sting a bit.
Erwin is a fighter on and off the board. He is an inspiriation and it is incredible to see him do so well again. Looking forward to many more walks in Wijk aan Zee with him!
GM Erwin l'Ami is an inspiration and an example of resilience! Diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease, a form of cancer, he defied the odds to become Dutch Champion for the first time. Now, he leads the pack in the highly competitive
#TataSteelChess
Challengers. Go Erwin!! 🚀
Missed underpromotions seem to be a theme in the Reykjavik Open this year. In this game, Black suddenly had a big chance to save the game with 47...e1N!, but went on to lose the game instead after 47...Rd8? 48.Kh4
Feels good to have finished recording my first
@chessable
course yesterday just in time, as I am on my way to Italy right now to finally play over the board chess again. Coincidentally also the country where I last played🧐
If you are bored due to a lack of exciting chess events, you might want to tune in to the finals of the Dutch Championships:
To make it more exciting, there will be a total of one commentary channel in a language you probably can't even understand!
My
@chessable
course has just been released! It is a highly dynamic repertoire for Black against 1.d4. We take our opponent away from the well known paths as early as move 3 after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Pc3/3.Pf3 a6! :
The Magnus Carlsen Invitational, the 4th event on the $1.5 million Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, starts Saturday at 17:00 CET! Check out all the details:

BREAKING | 2024
#TataSteelChess
Tournament full line-up announcement! ♟️
The world's top grandmasters and talents are expected to bring some exciting matches to Wijk aan Zee once again.
See you in January 💙
Great stream, thanks
@NihalSarin
and Sankalp for joining!
@max_warmerdam
is our new star. 😅🔥♟
Do stick around to follow St.Louis commentary by Srinath, I will drop by for some bullet lessons later too.🙏
Isn't it a bit odd that the new rating spot for the candidates comes down to one rating list? Apart from Ding Liren needing 26 games, it is close for the other players as well. They might start organising their own matches or participate in tournaments they otherwise wouldn't
Last November, I played in the World Team Championship, which had a rapid time control. Right now, the World Rapid Team Championship is taking place, which is an entirely different type of event. Make it make sense.
I have to admit that Richard Rapport’s 5.a3 is not in my
@chessable
course, but at least it does not seem like it is going to be a refutation of the Janowski.
♟| BREAKING | 2023 Tata Steel Challengers playing field announcement!
The field consists of a mix of established players and promising young talents. Find the full line-up on our website 💙.
Am I the only one that finds it odd they have not seen a reaction by
@FIDE_chess
on the deal between
@chesscom
and
@PlayMagnus
? Seems pretty relevant to the chess world to me.
Had a good run at the Dutch Championships, but all good things come to an end! Now it's popcorn time for an exciting final between Jorden and Anish🔥

Odd to see Rapport get such a bad position out of the opening, especially considering that he played 5.Bf4 himself in the 2021 Sinquefield Cup against Caruana.
Difficult to understand what went through Ding’s mind when he played Bxf6. The simple Bh4-Bg3 would exchange the right pieces and give the attacking potential to fight for a win.
#NepoDing
Jorden could have gone for the beautiful 28.Bxd6! here, with the idea of sacrificing the queen after 28...c3 29.Qxb5! cxb5 30.Bxb4 with a winning advantage. Instead, he went for the more normal-looking e5 which seems to give a winning advantage as well
Make sure to check it out! I have been employing this repertoire since Magnus Carlsen inspired me to start playing it in 2018. Not only have I played it with a lot of success, but most importantly, with a lot of fun!

Playing two days in a row in Russia was going to be tough, and having little energy left after the first one did not leave me with too much hopes for the second. However, in the end I had the best tournament of my career to win the Tolstoy Cup with 8 out of 9!
Happy to see the release of my newest Chessable course! The Von-Hennig Schara Gambit is an exciting pawn sacrifice for active piece play. It has seen a lot of big developments in the last two years with even Magnus Carlsen playing it these days:
It was a great experience to play the 9 rounder at the
@tatasteelchess
tournament. The experience was even better when I won the Top 9 rounder with 7 out of 9 points and earned my ticket to the Challengers in 2020!
Scored another 1.5/2 in the past two tournaments with it! If not for covid I would have liked to play it a lot more, but my hundreds of online games make up for it😅
**FREEBIE ALERT**
