I'd be a *billionaire* now if I hadn't sold the 55,000 bitcoins I mined on my laptop in 2009-2010 way too early (mostly before 2012). That is regretful, but then again, with the early bitcoiners we set in motion something greater than personal gain.
Some lessons learned: 1) Money matters: more is always better than less. 2) Still, you don't need to be rich to lead a perfectly good life. It's about the basic things. 3) You don't live forever. Pursuing something greater than yourself brings meaning in life.
In 2011 when the exchange rate peaked at $15-$30, I sold over 10,000 BTC to buy a fairly comfortable studio apartment near Helsinki. Big deal for a 22-year-old who never had much money. Probably the most expensive studio in the world now, but at least I got more than 2 pizzas.
Perhaps owing to Finnish culture, idealistic mentality and lack of life experience, I never thought much about making money. It happened accidentally as a byproduct of Satoshi asking me to keep my node running so others could connect. Thank you, Satoshi.
I quit a boring job as a junior software developer and went to study Japanese for a couple months in Fukuoka, Japan. Also visited the Tokyo office of Mt. Gox when they were still doing great. Tokyo sunset from the office:
Satoshi downplayed his writing, but as evident from the emails, his English was perfect, much better than mine. I don't remember a single instance where he even made a spelling error.
Nope. Bitcoin was announced on the cryptography mailing list in January 2009 and many people could have tested it. I found Bitcoin around April.
@Cointelegraph
Then I ran for a while in 2010. At the time, there was no established exchange rate, and I operated it more like a bitcoin faucet than a business, ending up with 30,000 BTC less.
I was planning to hodl the rest of my BTC, but had to sell the most of it at a bad rate (~$5) in 2012 when finding a new job took longer than expected.
Apparently CSW has claimed in court that I cofounded Silk Road and worked "to allow assassination markets". For the record: that is obviously a made up accusation.
I have to add, this hasn't been as rough as it might first sound. It's not like I ever had $1B and lost it overnight. Besides Bitcoin's success, I was pretty darn happy about getting my own apartment at age 22.
Never had serious regret about not being super-rich or even a millionaire — that would be kind of entitled and ungrateful to all the good that life has given (and the absence of really bad things).
I'm leaning not to, since it would be a distraction from actually meaningful things. I don't think his claims are going to affect my life - no one takes him seriously. Then again, would be good to see justice served and him not getting away with outright slander.
Taking a closer look to the transcript, CSW is accusing me and Theymos of soliciting drug trade, assassinations, terrorism and child porn. That is too much to be ignored.
In the Finnish national epic Kalevala, the legendary blacksmith Ilmarinen builds the Sampo, a device producing endless riches and good fortune. It is lost in a "boating accident", but some of its fragments wash ashore, bringing wealth to their finders.
New Iris-electron release out. Iris is like Discord or Twitter, but it's a p2p application, not a "platform" that you can be thrown out of. Still glitchy, so dev help would be much appreciated!
I don't understand the value proposal of NFTs if you don't get the copyright.
On the other hand, I don't understand why anyone would watch soccer or listen to rap music either.
I want to thank everyone for the support I've received. Already got some suggestions where to start, but recommendations for good lawyers etc. are welcome. Email mmalmi

Torch update. I wanted to send it to someone who is more OG than me, and luckily I happen to know someone who is. This person is the first
#Bitcoin
developer after Satoshi Nakamoto.
@marttimalmi
a.k.a Sirius now has the torch!

There's a long history of economic "experts" telling us that bitcoin is not going to work. Historically, listening to them hasn't been a good idea. I don't think it's any different this time.
Passing on the torch to
@kangasbros
. He is the founder of LocalBitcoins, a service that has since 2012 helped millions of people all around the world, incl. places like Venezuela, to buy and sell bitcoins.
To the "keep telling that to yourself" folks: Basically all the early bitcoiners were idealists who above all wanted to change the world. In that we were successful.
”Money doesn’t work that way” - getting rejected or ignored was indeed the usual reaction to bitcoin back in the day. Bitcoin’s success forced ppl to re-evaluate their conceptions about money and other things, such as the authority of ”experts” in some fields.

There is tons of bizarre fantasy in the OT, but one of the things wrong with it is that a non-official & decentralized currency was politically & economically a very fringe idea. All economists of all stripes, including Austrian, who heard the idea either ignored or rejected it.
In response to some questions: It's not running on a blockchain. Blockchain is not the right tool for social media. You don't need or want strong consistency there - slow and expensive sync with everyone in the world.
I’m in it for Identifi and GUN. Generally very sceptical about altcoins. You need to ask why not just use btc+lightning - discussing that with
@marknadal
who does have good arguments in favor of AXE.
Of course, it would have been possible and fun to *also* get rich while being an idealist. Then you could invest and donate to advance the cause (while driving a sports car). But thanks to Bitcoin, many people are taking care of just that.
In late 2010 there was an influx of bitcoiners who were only interested in mining. That's not wrong by any means, just different than the idealist ethos. Bitcoin had the right incentives for growth.
EU-tasolla vaadittu louhintarajoituksia.

I just added support for
#nostr
keys and profiles to . If you already have an iris key, a nostr key is derived from it. If you log in with a nostr key, an iris key is derived from it. For now it only syncs your profile, but I'll add posts as well.
As an issuer of security tokens or NFTs, what do you do when someone claims they were stolen and demands reissuance? What proof do you require and when do you have a legal obligation to comply?

That is of course made up and easily warrants for defamation charges. On the other hand, is there anything to be gained? No one takes that guy seriously anyway.
If you're interested in fully decentralized social networking, check out . Lots of improvements added.
It's still a proof of concept, so more devs needed to smooth the rough edges.
Freedom Pi: open wifi hotspot with filesharing, chat, offline wikipedia and FM broadcasting. Designed for offline use, but optionally shares Internet access over Tor. What features would you add?
Like bitcoin gave us a free market alternative to banks, DeFi could give us a free market alternative to insurance companies. I think it could be a great development for freedom.
@Chainlank
PoS is not tested by time yet. There are potential risks with censorship and centralization. If PoW is the only way to avoid that, then it's worth the energy use. We'll see. And you don't even need to waste the energy — it can be used for heating.
Next month, I will be in Costa Rica for the world's first Nostr conference , and it will be epic! Huge thanks to
@r0ckstardev
for organizing the fundraiser and to all who made this possible through their donations!
Anyone else annoyed by Twitter showing dumb political tweets from people you don't even follow? Sometimes I've even unfollowed people because their follows would show up.
Spending a lot of money on something seemingly useless can be a display of devotion or social status. Perhaps NFT wedding rings will be the next big thing?
If commodities were traded for BTC on a DEX, could we use the market prices to establish a "basket currency" — a derivative unit of account that is relatively stable and can be used for pricing instead of USD? Its BTC value could be independently verified from the DEX.
