The ACL Padres get underway in a big way, Dylan Lesko struggles again, and El Paso gets a win with a strong outing from another potential bullpen option for the big league club. That and more in today's Daily:
Imagine telling a
#Padres
fan in 2014 that one day, they'd make a local kid who threw the club's first no-hitter a $100M deal to become the fourth-highest paid player on the team, and it wouldn't be the team's biggest story of the day.
These are not your padre's Padres!
We lost a few followers, but thank you to everyone who put up with us commenting on things other than baseball. All of us tried to stick to our personal accounts because we realize people come here for Padres Prospect news, but we are human beings before we are baseball fans.
Obviously De Vries is the headline today, but the Padres' long connection to Diablos Rojos continues to pay off as the deal with RHP Humberto Cruz, widely seen as the best Mexican pitcher in this year's class, becomes official as well. The 17-year-old should begin stateside.
After a bit of a delay getting his visa, top international signee Leo de Vries has reported to Padres' minor league spring training and is on field for the first time this morning. He'll be one of the top storylines we will be covering in the system this year.
Tonight is a good night to remember that Barry Bloom once tweeted to us that we were over-hyping Fernando Tatis, Jr. after he saw him play ONE game in Low-A Fort Wayne. Now we’ll watch with everyone else if he hits home run number four. Enjoy.
Robert Suarez made his first rehab inning in the ACL this morning.

It goes without saying, the big league team has really missed him.
Dylan Lesko threw a total of 35 pitches over two "innings" of live BP. Sat 94-5, change looked as good as advertised at 80-82, spun a few nice breaking balls. He's definitely getting close.
Pierce Johnson came back after one day off and struck out the side to pick up a save in his third rehab appearance for
@epchihuahuas
. He's struck out five of six batters faced in his last two outings. Watch for a quick return to the
#Padres
bullpen.
Jose Castillo struck out a batter in his second straight mid-inning appearance for El Paso tonight. The big lefty hasn't allowed a run in five outings since moving up to Triple-A.
In case you were wondering.
After a bit of a delay getting his visa, top international signee Leo de Vries has reported to Padres' minor league spring training and is on field for the first time this morning. He'll be one of the top storylines we will be covering in the system this year.
MacKenzie Gore goes seven scoreless innings to bring his ERA down to 1.02 for the year. Nine more strikeouts gives him a 110:20 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 79.1 innings.
He leaves for the Futures Game this weekend.
May we all live a life that brings as much joy to - and shows as much concern for - the people around us.
Our deep condolences to the Seidler family and everyone who Peter touched with his generosity.
With profound sadness, the Padres announce that their Chairman and Owner Peter Seidler passed away today in San Diego. He will be dearly missed.
Please see the attached press release for further detail:
Big James Wood just blasted his eighth home run on the road at Inland Empire. For those of you prospect hugging at home, he is now hitting .327 with a 1.027 OPS.
@storm
up 5-0 in the bottom of the third.
Matt Strahm tossed 1.2 perfect innings in his latest rehab appearance for
@epchihuahuas
. 17 of his 22 pitches were strikes. He's now struck out 7 in 3.2 innings working on an every three day schedule.
Imagine if Cronenworth took the mound as an opener with his mid-90s fastball and a quality curve. He then spends the next 8 innings playing around the infield & blasts a home run. Padres’ Twitter might never recover.
When Luis Patiño makes his first start for Amarillo, he'll become the youngest pitcher in Double-A this year. The next closest competition? Also a Sod Poodle.
And the guy after that?
Him too.
And the next guy?
Yep, a Sod Poodle.
Nice to see Homer Bush, Jr. get out of the box fast in Peoria. The Padres' fourth-rounder goes 2-for-4 with a double and his second stolen base and he's now reached in six of his first 12 professional plate appearances.
How do you know it's Thursday?
Robby Snelling!

The gap from his league-leading 1.57 ERA to second place is greater than the gap from second to ninth.
He's thrown 51.2 innings so far this year.
A two-run home run by Joshua Mears with Robert Hassell III on. Mears just dented the video board in left field. Joshua has 13 hits; 5 of them have been doubles, and 6 are home runs.
Dillon Head with a single, double, and two walks so far in his professional debut. Hitting behind Homer Bush, Jr., who's been on base three times and swiped his sixth base in seven games.
In the desert, Gore walks a second batter and gives up an infield single, but strikes out two more in the fifth. So far:

Craig Stammen signed as a minor league free agent with an invite to spring training in December, 2016.
The fact that he proceeded to appear in 333 games over six seasons and never left the organization is truly remarkable.
Guerra, Pagan, Pomeranz, Pierce, Stammen, Yates is one hell of a core of a bullpen. And combine for zero minor league options. Which leaves two spots for Muñoz, Castillo, Wingenter, Strahm, Bednar, Perdomo, etc. to rotate through.
Totally unrelated to AJ Preller's announcement, figured we'd point out that Jay Groome has posted a 3.97 ERA with 36 strikeouts across 34.2 innings in his last six starts for
@epchihuahuas
.
Hard to be surprised by anything Salas does at this point. He's far exceeding any reasonable expectation for this season.
After posting a .632 OPS in his first month in affiliated ball, he just demolished the Cal League throughout July.
Another day, another award for Ethan Salas!
He batted .366/.416/.720 with 1.136 OPS and finished the month second in the league in average (.366), hits (30), home runs (seven), triples (two), AND slugging percentage (.720)
Robert Hassell III, Euribiel Angeles, and Brandon Valenzuela have all been promoted to
@TinCaps
. The trio immediately become the top position prospects on the roster.
Pierce Johnson struck out two in a scoreless inning for
@epchihuahuas
tonight.
Craig Stamen struck out two in his first rehab appearance with
@Storm_Baseball
.
Dylan Lesko makes a statement with his outing against South Bend:

Up to 97 with the fastball, showing off the change.
First pitch of the game, Esteury Ruiz smacks a line drive into left field. Second pitch steals second base. Third pitch, CJ Abrams hits a single to left, Ruiz scores.
@epchihuahuas
up 1-0 in the bottom of the first.
A few weeks after some key talent arrived at
@TinCaps
, there's a big group moving on from there:
IFs Jackson Merrill and Marcos Castañon and RHPs Adam Mazur, Jairo Iriarte, and Ryan Bergert have been promoted to

.

The Padres have six guys making their professional debuts in the ACL today including first- rounder Jackson Merrill. Five draftees and UDFA Cole Cummings.
Robert Hassell hits his second home run in Game 2. The first was an opposite field shot, this one was pulled down the right field line.
@TinCaps
up 6-2 in the 5th. Fort Wayne has a team this year.
Thank you for all the texts and DMs checking in on me. No one ran into any problems exiting the stadium. I’ll see everyone in the morning for the Daily. jc
This won't be news to our followers, but it's a reminder of just how impressive Snelling's season was.
Given how rare it is, probably worth noting that it's the second time in five years a Padres prospect pulled it off.
We’re not talking enough about Robby Snelling’s historic 2023. He’s one of just seven pitchers since the year 2000 w/ a MiLB season w/ 100+ IP and an ERA under 2.00. This group includes Bumgarner, Hamels, Jose Fernandez, Pineda & Painter
In the desert, Jarlin Susana making the case for promotion to full-season ball. 4 hitless innings with 8 strikeouts tonight. Now up to 32 strikeouts in the last 18.2 innings.
Mears just crushed his second home run of the afternoon to left-center. The opposing team's announcers are still not sure where it landed. It's his fifth home run of the series & second two-run HR game.
@TinCaps
up 11-7 in the sixth of the first game of a doubleheader.
Here's our Top 25 list as the Padres head into 2021.
In this very different year - and in the wake of this week's Prellerpalooza - we've done a few things differently. What's not different? MacKenzie Gore is at the top of a strong system.
38 hitters across MiLB have at least 15 doubles, 15 homers, and a K rate under 20% this year.
Six are in the Padres system:
Merrill
Martorella
Marsee
Pauley
Ornelas
Daniel Johnson
Add in 15 SB, and the full list drops to 14, and for our the Padres remain.
Bobby Barrels is making his presence known with a 414-foot blast to right field for his seventh home run of the season. Hassell is 2-4 on his first day back.
@TinCaps
up 3-0 after 7 innings.
Padres first-rounder Dillon Head has been activated in advance of tonight's ACL game in the desert.
Looks like the rest of the class will wait another day or two.
