The way I see it is that it's just a very old rich person who decided to make tuition free in an attempt to make her medical school more accessible and affordable. Big deal. It's her money, and you can't fix everything — what's wrong with putting it here vs doing nothing with it?

The correct answer is there’s nothing wrong with it. People like Ben just believe their causes are more important because they’re close to them. Dr Gottesman chose an interest close to her being a former professor. They suggest the money could have gone to kids in the Bronx,…

The cherry on the sundae would have been to make the guarantee contingent on practicing for a number of years in an underserved area...other than that.....

People are saying it's not the most efficient use of charity, but that doesn't make it bad. Who among us uses their time and money the most efficiently way possible to help humanity as a whole? Almost nobody.

If she wanted to actually make the school more accessible bribing the AMA to stop artificially restricting the number of doctors in the US would have been a better use of her money
@lxeagle17
It’s better than buying naming rights to another campus building. My wife is first generation college and medical school. If med school had been tuition free, it would have been life changing
@lxeagle17
Why is it bad to make it more accessible and affordable? It IS a big deal for those who might have wanted to be doctors but could never have afforded to live while attending.
It’s absolutely HUGE for them.
@lxeagle17
ben is automatically assuming all med school students are wealthy nepo babies, which isn’t the case. and this donation would further help students from lower income backgrounds. it provides equity. it would be better if higher education was free but this is a start.

i think the anger is generally not directed at this specific instance but rather what it means to live in a society where we’re told this cannot be achieved by our government for all people and have to resort to the luck of billionaire philanthropy to have what other countries do
@lxeagle17
Eh, I can say from going through the medical school application process it is very broken and there is a lot of issues within it. One thing to keep in mind is that medical residency is funded by the federal government. So this money goes to the school, not students applying.

Is it about those who recently graduated, but in heavy debt from student loans that is like 20 years to pay back, don't feel fair about it? I am no American.
