RIP Seamus Flynn. Winner of O’Byrne Cup & Gaelic Weekly Cup in ‘65, National League and NFL Division 2 in ‘66 and Leinster SFC in ‘68. Selected on Team of Millennium, he won 7 SFC’s with Clonguish (Captain in ‘68 & ‘72). Only Longford man to captain Leinster in Railway Cup (‘68).

@willocallaghan Longford has had just 3 adult hurling clubs for 20 years now. Can't raise more than 20 players from Longford clubs for county team this year. Big investment needed in grassroots hurling in Longford. The few are doing all the leg work. It's unfair and unsustainable.

The Longford Slashers club was formed this week in 1954 (Monday 4th Jan 1954) when Whiterock Slashers and Longford Wanderers clubs united to form a new club. The 'Slashers' name is a nod to Cavan's Myles 'The Slasher' O'Reilly, a legendary Irish hero of the 17th century.

In March 1970 Longford played Clare in SF Challenge in Milltown Malbay. Longford could only muster 15 on the day. When John Smith (Mostrim) got injured there was no sub, so the County Board Chairman Liam Mulvihill (later DG of the GAA) was pressed into action as his replacement.

70 years ago this month Whiterock Slashers invited Longford Wanderers to their AGM in the Temperance Hall in Longford town on 4th January 1954, where both clubs agreed to merge and form a new club called 'Longford Slashers'. And just like that a legendary club name was born!

RIP Mick Loftus. He was the man in the middle when Longford played Kerry in the All-Ireland SFC semi-final in 1968, and in Longford's NFL Division 2 decider in 1966.
