Beta tester, software engineer, and angel investor. ✨ Co-author of OAuth and oEmbed specs. Formerly: iOS at
@Twitter
, tech co-founder
@breaker
and

My financial advisor told me about a client who became very wealthy in tech. They owned several homes, married and had children, traveled all over the world, and bought expensive things. When asked what made them happiest, they replied, “Sitting in a quiet room writing code.”
Life update: I’m pregnant with my first baby (a boy)!
I’m currently 38 weeks along and due very soon. I’m 40 years old and lucky to have had an easy and healthy pregnancy. I continue to exercise 3-4 days a week and walk and e-bike to get around.
When I left Twitter in March, I…
Major Twitter improvement we just released is that you can now bookmark tweets from tweet details page.
Importantly, bookmarks are *private*, unlike likes. No one other than you can see your bookmarks.
Why do I continue to work at Twitter?
First, some backstory…
I was the technical co-founder of Pownce, a social network and early competitor to Twitter. Here’s a video of 25-year-old me talking about Pownce (ht
@jdlasica
and
@seeMOUSErun
).
I turned on a Spaces feature that did not perform well at scale. Luckily the Site Stability team was on it right away and we rolled it back. Apologies! 😭
So that’s where I am now. The new Twitter team is TINY compared to what it was. I have a front row seat to Elon Twitter. TBD what happens next. It certainly is not boring.
I tried my best to stay positive and keep Twitter a good place to work. 🍨
What’s next? I have some travel planned and am looking forward to relaxing! 😌
In work news, I’m joining Twitter to help build
@TwitterSpaces
! 🥳 While I’ll very much miss
@breaker
, I’m so excited to help create the future of audio conversations.
My laptop was locked on Saturday night but I didn’t get notified until today. My only regret is not getting fired for something awesome and hilarious. Instead I’m just part of the layoff of acquired founders.
Really neat that the new owner is the co-creator of OAuth, but as fits that role the great blank key shot
@leahculver
slipped in and Business Insider used made my day.
Baby boy Japheth “Japhy” was born 10/10 at 7 lbs 8 oz. We are both healthy and happy! 💕
We chose the name Japhy from the protagonist in Jack Kerouac’s book The Dharma Bums and his full name, Japheth, comes from one of the sons of Noah.
Welcome to the world, baby Japhy!
Six years ago SVB was the only bank who would give my startup a credit card so we could launch our iPhone app in the App Store. Really bummed about the future implications of their current situation.
Yes, it's a San Francisco landmark! And yes, it's a fixer-upper. 😬🔨 Follow along with the remodel... the before, after, and in-between at
@pinkpaintedlady
on Twitter and Instagram.
If I left San Francisco, where would I go? I’m an independent, ambitious, technical, athletic woman who likes wearing costumes in public even when it’s not Halloween.
@kelseyhuse30
I’m getting married for the first time in a few weeks at 38 years old! ❤️ I know myself a lot better than I did in my 20s and we got engaged this spring after only a year of dating.
So when
@elonmusk
forced us to opt in to staying at Twitter, I said “yes” right away. I certainly do not blame anyone for opting out and taking the severance. Personally I could afford to take the risk and could quit any time.
My bad. We weren’t originally planning to display counts on Promoted Tweets and there wasn’t time to update the text here and have it translated. It’ll be fixed next version! 🫣
SO EXCITED to finally ship my Twitter Hack Week project… hashfetti! ✨
Tap the hashtag

Then, keep on reading for a bit of backstory…
New laptop! ✨ I’m not really a hardware nerd, and although I’m an iOS developer, I don’t follow
@apple
updates that closely. So this week I got the new MacBook Pro 13-inch, and I’m excited to give what I’m calling “The Average Developer’s Review”…. a thread.
The plan is to preserve and restore and make it a beautiful San Francisco home. ❤️ It will cost some time and $$ but hopefully will be worth it. I’m also very excited to share the process! Feel free to ask me anything.
New
@TwitterSpaces
features for muting! 🤐 Now everyone can see who is muted (or not). Hosts have the ability to mute individual speakers or everyone at once.
SF Painted Lady sells for $3.5 million. It’s a fixer upper and the new owner is sharing some of her vision tonight at 11. You can even follow along
@pinkpaintedlady
. And yes pink will be part of the facades paint pallet.
@nbcbayarea
I'm concerned about our upcoming US elections and hope that everyone can vote and also stay safe. Since I'm fairly healthy and cautious, I signed up to volunteer as a poll worker. You can too!
Spaces was like a startup within Twitter. We moved quickly and had the blessing from management to ship fast.
The beginning of 2021 was a time of product innovation at Twitter, due to the acquisition of a bunch of small cool startups (Squad, Ueno, Revue, Threader, Sphere).
I’ve been working as a software engineer in social networking for nearly two decades; my entire career. For many years I was bitter and resentful that Twitter “won” when I believed I had built a better product with Pownce.
For everyone who is skipping out on Thanksgiving this year... let me welcome you to my wonderful world! Turkey is trash dry chicken and you are allowed to eat tasty meat and celebrate what I call “Steaksgiving”! 🥩 😋 🍴
I founded two more companies, including Breaker, a social podcast app, in 2017 (with
@sferik
). The pandemic hurt podcasting (and fundraising) so we decided to sell to Twitter. For me, it was all about getting to work on Spaces, which I saw as the future of podcasting.
At this point I had to seriously think about what I wanted to do. I live within walking distance of Twitter HQ, so “return to office” wasn’t a problem. I’m an engineer and I’m used to working hard (startups are hard). Great people were laid off but others were still at Twitter.
For me personally, it was a happy retirement. I could write code for a fun product, the people were nice, and it was generally relaxing. Then
@elonmusk
happened.
🎶 suspenseful music 🎶
When
@elonmusk
took over Twitter, we saw our chance.
With the company in chaos, we quickly finished up our “Hashfetti” project and shipped it. 🛳️ 🎉
I’m so proud of our small, scrappy, and ambitious team.
Let’s keep Twitter shipping. 🐿️
The most successful people I’ve met:
1. Are a bitch.
2. Are a lover.
3. Are a child.
4. Are a mother.
5. Are a sinner.
6. Are a saint.
7. Do not feel ashamed.
The most successful people I've met:
1. Read constantly
2. Workout daily
3. Are innately curious
4. Have laser focus
5. Believe in themselves
6. Build incredible teams
7. Admit they know very little
8. Constantly work to improve
9. Demand excellence in everything they do
All my managers, all the way up the chain, were gone (and I had a lot of managers!). My Breaker teammates were out. Half the Spaces team as well. It occurred to me, probably more quickly than most, that everything was going to change.
