Spaces was like a startup within Twitter. We moved quickly and had the blessing from management to ship fast. The beginning of 2021 was a time of product innovation at Twitter, due to the acquisition of a bunch of small cool startups (Squad, Ueno, Revue, Threader, Sphere).

I founded two more companies, including Breaker, a social podcast app, in 2017 (with @sferik ). The pandemic hurt podcasting (and fundraising) so we decided to sell to Twitter. For me, it was all about getting to work on Spaces, which I saw as the future of podcasting.

At this point I had to seriously think about what I wanted to do. I live within walking distance of Twitter HQ, so “return to office” wasn’t a problem. I’m an engineer and I’m used to working hard (startups are hard). Great people were laid off but others were still at Twitter.
