My latest book which deals with Jefferson, Madison, Monroe & Jackson conquering Florida for the US is now available in paperback/Kindle & Hardcover. Lots of Spanish, British & native history as well.
The American Conquest of Florida (Albion Florida) .
A reminder- At least 12 counties I know of (maybe more) are still counting provisional ballots. All counties still could be counting military ballots. Broward and Palm Beach aren't alone. Governor Scott mentioned them for a specific reason.

I wonder why American soccer twitter & media aren’t celebrating Khiry Shelton today instead of making myopic Pulisic comments. Shelton worked through college, PDL, USL, MLS & Buliga2 to make his Bundesliga 1 debut today. A great example of long-term development in the US system.
Democracies don’t become autocracies overnight. It doesn’t take a coup or insurrection necessarily. It’s a process where gradually local governments & representative institutions are usurped. That’s where we are in DeSantis’ Florida. It’s a gradual weakening of checks & balances.
I cannot believe it has to be explained to people who follow MLS why so many Americans, particularly those of us who have been disenfranchised by the closed-league, crony-driven system in this country find Wrexham very compelling.
It’s so stunningly obvious it’s pathetic .
The FIFA video game has been IMO the single biggest driver of new interest in soccer in the US since 2005 (not the USSF or Prem on NBC or Champions League or MLS or anything else).
How today's news impacts that, I have no idea.
Would love to hear some feedback.
When CNN leads the news, hour after hour with Grant’s passing, and ESPN dedicates SportsCenter segments to discussing his work & reporting from Qatar, Fox really failed. Even worse than usual. He worked with them for 7 years ! This should be the breaking point for fans w/ them.
Watching US sports is really tough once you are accustomed to soccer. I've tried watching the NBA & College Football lately but the number of commercials & frequency of breaks kill me. I am accustomed to 45 minutes uninterrupted, an intermission, then another 45. Like a play.
I get a lot of fans of MLS teams & people who work in MLS don’t think this is a big deal.
But for those of us who’ve toiled, either working in the lower divisions, or covering the lower divisions ( in my case both), I can’t quantify how disrespected I feel
for everything I and
It is insulting when the mainstream news media mentions the NBA restart at Disney and does not mention
#MLSisBack
having already kicked off in the same complex. Equally disappointing no one mentioning
#NWSL
. Domestic pro soccer implemented safety protocols & bubbles first.
MLS pulling out of the
#USopenCup
deprives lower division teams of a potential huge home gate.
This is a way of financially starving independent lower division clubs. Putting them out of business. Or forcing them to submit by joining MLS NP.
It’s bad for soccer.
Period.
I hope the national media, inspite of its inherent anti-soccer bias acknowledges what
#MLS
players did tonight. They make a lot less than NBA and MLB players do - the sacrifice and risk greater for them. Yet they did what they believed in. Give them some credit, please!
Consider history. UGA led the move to strip Florida of its first SEC title in 1984. Bama along with Auburn and Ole Miss defended UF. The Gators had the title stripped by a 6-4 vote. Any long-term Gator should always root for Bama, Auburn or Ole Miss vs Georgia. Period.
The obsession the national media has with Afghanistan is taking important attention away from Florida.
More Floridians have died of Covid in the last 3 weeks than American service people (not contractors) in Afghanistan the last 19 YEARS!!! Let’s get our priorities straight.
2,000 Disney executive jobs (these are the type of high-end professional jobs I talk about our state badly needing) were to move from Burbank to Lake Nona in 2022. Now they’re staying in Burbank… Thanks Governor DeSantis!
Since the Governor is doing a press conference in Lake Nona to celebrate the approval of a conservative think tank (LOL) maybe someone should ask him about all the Disney jobs that got “delayed” due to his attacks on one of our region’s largest employers LOL
Totally obscene.
Especially given Seb and Herc do the only mainstream media English language show that’s focused on the game at all levels and men’s and women’s in this country.
SUM/MLS should be ashamed of itself.
I just can’t believe this.
No US player who skipped
#MLS
and went directly to Europe has ever been as good as Canadian Alphonso Davies who played in MLS. Each player is different & needs a unique development path. Still the absolute certainty some anti-MLSers operate with can be easily debunked by Davies.

Do not account for travel or a long hard club season just ending.
This is a HUGE development in US Soccer. I’m disappointed more people are not talking about it today. Do I have to lay out in laymen’s terms how important having USL clubs in non-MLS markets developing high level guys is for the game? Should be obvious. Needs to be embraced.

MLS / SUM was responsible for marketing this tournament between 2005 and 2022. Don't let these quotes fool you. The state of the cup that the USSF inherited in 2022 was largely down to MLS itself starving the competition.
For those on your moral high horse about Red Bull and Leipzig. 1- No organization scouts young talent that isn't already being showcased in Europe better than Red Bull. 2- Red Bull bought a 5th division team and built them up. (1/3)

I STRONGLY object to term “riot” to describe Jan 6. A riot historically is an act of civil disobedience that turns violent be it leftists or right-wing. Jan 6 was an attempt to stop the electoral process and reverse the inevitable result. That’s an insurrection or a coup. Period.
Why is it when I watch Serie A and the Bundesliga I am not constantly complaining about

? Switch back to the Prem and it's outrage after outrage? This league is getting it so so wrong.
Klinsmann threw players under the bus all the time, even blaming Fabian Johnson (at the time the top US player in Europe )for a critical loss to Mexico where Klinsmann was holding a sub to swap in Nick Rimando for pens. I kid not. The double-standard of some fans is mind-blowing.
I'm indifferent to Berhalter & don't think he should be airing issues that are best kept in-house.
But to it's ridiculous to see the condemnation from Klinsmann apologists, given that publicly & needlessy airing gripes about his players, was his MO.
I think poking holes in Atlanta United's success & relevance just makes folks look (rightly) bitter. That club is the most relevant thing globally about American men's football/soccer right now. They're creating conversations and respect NO

CLUB EVER HAS. Embrace it America.
It's apparent when you observe MLS players having success in qualifying for countries other than the US, most recently Svensson w/ Sweden the league's level of play isn't the issue - it's the comfort zone & protection it provides American players who are inflicted w/ complacency.
I hate to say this because I’m a reformer in domestic soccer but must be honest. The

MLS is no different than a business that takes government subsidies then once those run out, turns around & starts calling for less gov’t regulation.
US soccer effectively subsidized MLS through the SUM deal.
When the deal was cancelled MLS went about screwing US soccer.
Seeing FOX pregame for first time this tournament. It’s rubbish and insulting to thinking football fans. The analysis is so basic and quite frankly patronizing to those who actually follow the sport closely. We all miss ESPN.

Some MLS fans tend to get very defensive when the Apple deal is critiqued, but you can’t help but notice how successful USL has been in getting its teams on local broadcast television in the wake of MLS abandoning local TV completely.

All the folks that were so alarmed about Trump need to realize DeSantis is a bigger lunatic, works harder, much smarter, more competent, more authoritarian and is basically an American version of Viktor Orbán. You guys need to wake up to what this guy is and what he is doing.
What so many MLS fan don't get is even if they are the top league in the world in terms of quality of soccer, the lack of authenticity, edginess, story building, community clubs, etc will always undermine its potential. This sport is about so much more than what's on the field.
I cannot believe it has to be explained to people who follow MLS why so many Americans, particularly those of us who have been disenfranchised by the closed-league, crony-driven system in this country find Wrexham very compelling.
It’s so stunningly obvious it’s pathetic .
Our dog Sebastian just months short of his 14th birthday (DEC 6) passed away after a steep decline the last 36 hours. Sadly it happens at his age. A shock but we couldn’t allow someone who gave us so much love for so long to linger and suffer. This pic is from 3 weeks ago.
Today is truly one of the darkest days I’ve ever experienced in my time around American soccer. I just don’t know what to say other than spilling raw emotion which I don’t want to on here so I’ll save my takes for a podcast or later on here when I calm down.
The most striking thing about the Messi signing for me, while it's IMMENSE from a marketing standpoint is that the rest of MLS has essentially subsidized a club they are supposed to be competing with, buying the best player around. Where else would that happen? Seriously?
COVID cases in Florida are coming down as are hospitalizations. Deaths continue to be high (about 350 a day per my calculations over last 3 weeks) but deaths lag weeks behind cases. I'm cautiously optimistic that we may be turning the corner finally. Maybe. Critical week ahead.
I’d urge those who don’t think small towns deserve pro clubs to read this - written by the late great American author Joe McGinniss , the story of an Italian town, its culture and its football. A must read. ⬇️
Mou should be envious of Klopp. Plays football against Pep & beats Pep. Now five wins. Mou's gameplan against Pep has always been to sit deep, play cynically, hack Messi, now hack Sterling/Sane and whine about everything. Positivism wins out over negativity in all walks of life.
I think the USSF should tell MLS no more foreign guest teams in their league.
Let the Canadian teams play in a Canadian league.
Concacaf forced USL out of Ottawa.
If MLS is going to disrespect the domestic game FORCE THEM to once again be a domestic league.
Quite frankly, US soccer might want to settle with the NASL in the next couple days if they’re not going to do the right thing regarding the Open Cup, because anything short of putting sanctions on MLS means the PLS is effectively null & void.
The US Open Cup/MLS situation is a crossroads for the sport in this country. If MLS gets away with anything but full compliance, then it’s time for final goodbyes to the last shred of US meritorious competition.
#ussoccer
Make no mistake about it. This is the US version of the Super League drama. The timeline & fan actions are kind of similar.
And while MLS may be given a face-saving compromise in the end, the scheme unraveled for them as quickly as it did for those snobbish European giants.
#USSF
has tacitly rejected the largest single monetary offer to invest in the sport of soccer in the United States. Maintaining political control and limiting competition (that depresses player wages) must be seen as an institutional policy given this development. Much to ponder.
I have not renewed MLS Season Pass. While it is going to really hurt me the first few weeks, once USL and NWSL kick off, I will hardly notice because they’ll still be plenty of other domestic soccer to watch.
Throw in NISA & NPSL after that and I’m super busy w/o season pass.
A lot of MLS fans may not understand that I was once you. I was so evangelical about the league, I even went to lengths the patron MLS sponsors and avoid their competitors.
I’m all for the league doing well. But not at the expense the rest of the game in this country.

My father who passed on Friday at 79 had last been admitted to the hospital in 2005. That’s how healthy he had been before the cancer diagnosis in March. He worked 14 years at Johnson Controls, and 18 years at NASA as well as at FAU among other places.

Raul Jimenez is the most complete Mexican striker to play in the Prem IMO. Better than Chicharito, Vela, Borgetti, Gio (if you consider him a striker), etc. Raul does a ton well, not just scoring goals.
Oh I thought it was only an Open Cup problem? 😂
Selling midweek matches irrespective of the competition when they’re not part of a season ticket package is nearly impossible in this sport in the US.
Trust me,
I’ve been around enough in this sport to know this.

It’s not all about quality on the pitch. It’s about authenticity, community, potential for upward mobility, and any number of other reasons why so many football fans connect with the grassroots instead of the highly sanitized product MLS produces.
HOT TAKE: Wrexham's popularity in the US is cool but its also kind of annoying. People will refuse to watch MLS because of quality but will happily support a club in the 5th tier of English soccer. Sorry but you're not gonna argue that the National League is better than the MLS.
I’ve been saying for a few years the stereotypes of Serie A particularly among the English were horribly dated. See what I meant now? Italians play as free-flowing intricate passing football as anyone now. And it starts in the domestic league there.

If you like the Premier League because you like oligarchs, big spending, ownership changes every year & league hubris don’t watch the Bundesliga today- you won’t recognize what it is. If you just like football, watch it. It’s football as it once was everywhere & it’s meant to be.

Japan, Australia, maybe South Korea...China soon. Americans have to stop the “we’ve come so far” mantra and the victimization of the “game being over a century old everywhere else.” It’s simply not true. Deceptive spin.
Simple: Show me a country whose soccer infrastructure, supporters' culture, professional leagues, media, global relevancy, domestic relevancy, youth development, women's game, men's game, marketing, sponsorship and television has grown more in the last 30 years than USA.
I don’t even know what to say anymore. This is absurd. And beyond obtuse.
Those players have always had USL, NPSL once had NASL and now NiSA to play in.
As I tweeted the other day over half the current USMNT player pool has played in USL at some point .
First off 74.3 million isn't 75. You round down in that case. Secondly, no one has done more rhetorically to divide America than Senator Rubio who in the past accused President Obama of sedition and said he was divisive for visiting a mosque. Religious bigotry isn't unifying.
A radical leftist agenda in a divided country will not help unify our country, it will only confirm 75 million Americans biggest fears about the new administration

Much convo about how history will judge Trump enablers - I am far more concerned about how history will judge a generation of Anericans so selfish that they were willing to sacrifice their neighbors, families & friends to a pandemic so they could eat out, watch sports & travel.
Wrong.
It is MLS’ responsibility to facilitate a healthy professional game in this country, instead of being predatory and condescending towards the lower division.
He’s right. Hardcore soccer fans love US Open Cup but the facts are that games get bad attendance and viewership.
It’s not MLS’ responsibility to make US Open Cup a good product. US Soccer has done a bad job organizing it for YEARS and it’s no shock to hear things like this
The Florida Board of Education has voted unanimously to undermine local authority of School Boards in Alachua and Broward counties potentially targeting salaries and removing board members. Do people still think I am exaggerating when I say Florida is becoming an Autocracy?
