(I'm going to pin this tweet and that feels terrible) but anyway this website has resources and next steps for those who have been laid off.
Also a step-by-step guide for establishing a mutual aid network for Js in your community who have lost their jobs

In a meeting that lasted less than 15 minutes this afternoon,
@Gannett
announced mandatory furloughs at the holidays, buyouts, freezing our 401(k) match and stopping hiring. No details. Very little info on timeline.
I think most of us are either speechless or swearing rn.
It's Sunday. The first one of 2023!
Time to re-share my "templates" folder with y'all so you can organize your life and stop forgetting when you need an oil change or what the name of that really good recipe was.
Ok here's a long thread (with many links!) about Florida student athletes being asked to report their menstrual history.
Many national outlets have picked this up, so I want to bring you along on the ~journey~ that has been reporting this story.
If you're a
@Gannett
employee impacted by layoffs, there is a team that's working on community aid needs (networking, food assistance, insurance needs, etc) regardless of shop union status.
DM me for details.
I get tired of reading "said."
I get tired of writing "said."
If the book is full of nothing but "said," it makes me feel like the writer is unimaginative, and I might have trouble finishing their story.
Just saying.
There are so many words out there. Use more of them.
I'm not saying this to garner sympathy. I'm saying it to show how important it is that newsrooms commit to this kind of work and how much coordination goes into reporting something that people clearly do not want reported.
Support local news, y'all!

If your newsroom (or adjacent media company) is hiring, please reply to this tweet. We’re collecting opportunities for an online job board for folks who were caught up in

Include city/ state and links pls.
RT to spread the word!
I know everyone is dunking on this, but I’m going to add on.
Last year
@Gannett
laid off at least 600 ppl and stopped filling 400 jobs. People had to wait almost 2 months for their severance, which btw was capped at 26 years.
Local this, local that. Where are the priorities?

I'm laying this out here bc this reporting (and this story blowing up) would not have been possible without buy in and valuing of local watchdog reporting by my editors.
The bare minimum that the national news outlets covering this can do is to attribute + link to the

It's that time of year: If you're a student journalist I would like to personally tell you that you're doing great.
Don't worry about everyone else's jobs or internships or post-grad plans. Hype them up with grace, and then remember you're doing great.
It's going to be OK.
A reminder for tomorrow: Clicking on

Gannett is doing a second round of layoffs Dec. 1 and Dec. 2.
Journalists already have to convince so many people that the work we do matters. The owners and leaders of this company (the biggest newspaper chain in the US) shouldn't be on that list.
And if you made it to the end of this thread, please subscribe to your local newspaper so journalists can do this work in your community!
My fave, of course, is the

It's $1 per month.
Tomorrow,
@Gannett
will inform people (we don’t know how many) that they’re being laid off. They’ll have until Dec. 9 to work.
Our community aid network is kicking into gear. Fill out this form if you’d like to donate aid in any capacity:
@ChelseaTodaro
I was a reporter in SC through Michael, Florence, Dorian and Isaias and now Ian in FL.
Never once has a Waffle House closed near me! Hope that holds.
So now we're here: February 2023. The sports med committee's recommendation to mandate the questions will go to the board of directors when they meet at the end of the month.
I've got a hotel room booked. I'll be there.
I learned two very important things that day:
- don’t propose unless you’re sure of the answer
- if you turn down someone’s marriage proposal, you’re obligated to at least offer to pay the bill.
Happy Valentine’s Day.
y'all there are SO MANY PEOPLE who want to help Gannett journalists who were laid off today. It's really, really amazing to see on this crappy day.
If you know someone who was laid off, DM me. We're circulating a form for people to tell us what they need.
And that decision is based on one piece of info from FHSAA director Craig Damon, who says that 49 of the 50 states require students to report their menstrual history to play.
But according to my research, that's wrong:
Because the
@FHSAA
's executive director said he spoke with directors from all 50 states who said all but 1 require athletes to report their period history and turn it into their schools.
The problem? That's not true.
I know because I've reviewed every single state's form.
I was just in Gannett's shareholder meeting and it was a complete farce. I personally submitted questions directly related to the agenda and yet Mike Reed said there were no questions. Others also submitted questions.
#GannettGreed
Anyway, it's January and the FHSAA committee meets to discuss the form. They decide they want to recommend the questions be MANDATORY and require athletes to turn in all their med history to schools.
For repro privacy advocates, that's a big step back.
286.
That's the number of years of combined experience that the people
@Gannett
laid off last week had at this company. And that's only amongst the 42 people who have requested mutual aid so far.
286 years. Out the door.
Also the meeting, despite being public, was not available to stream online and had a bare bones agenda.
I drove to and from Gainesville the day before the November elections and two days before Hurricane Nicole to cover the meeting. It's 275 miles away.
10 states specifically tell students NOT to turn in their medical history and another 5 don't ask any questions about an athlete's period.
I sent that research to the FHSAA and sports med committee.
Every type of journalism has its particular strengths but one way TV folks will always dunk on us print/digital folks is their ability to function on early assignments.
I have to be at a high school at 7:15 this morning and it feels like
BREAKING: Florida’s state athletics association will discuss removing questions about period history for student athletes at their meeting in 3 weeks.
Confirmed by board member
@ralpharza_
to the
@pbcsd
just now. Arza will recommend removal AND changing the form. Story coming…
I was waiting until May to launch this site, but in light of the
#Buzzfeed
news:
I made this website as a guide for how to set up a community aid network following media layoffs. If you want to do something to help those affected, become a coordinator!
That FHSAA form is loosely based on a national medical history form, where athletes also have to report their menstrual history.
BUT on the national form, developed by
@AmerPedSociety
, the athletes are specifically told NOT to turn in their medical history forms to schools.
These meetings had no public comment period, and dozens of people have emailed me about this story asking how they can be heard.
In short... I tell them I don't know. The FHSAA has a "public input" email address but I've never heard comments from that avenue shared or addressed
In short, the story blew up.
Our local school board addressed it immediately. They allowed parents to use paper forms this year, and sent word to the FHSAA that they want changes so athletes don't have to turn in this info.
Side note: I was quite unwelcome at that meeting.
The board forced me to introduce myself and name dropped The Post multiple times. A member of the sports med committee wrote a letter to the board calling out me out by name and criticizing my lack of medical expertise.
Two days later, the committee calls a special meeting.
The director apologizes for giving false information, again name dropping The Post in his remarks.
So I wrote about it. We tracked down where the info is kept, how coaches use it, and talked to parents about how they feel differently about reproductive privacy in a post-Roe world.
Here is that story:
It's Thursday! Time for a
#journalismjobs
thread!
A few folks who were impacted in December by
#GannettLayoffs
are looking for full-time gigs following a few months of freelancing.
Is your newsroom/media company hiring? Drop the location, job title, salary and a link below ✨
If you are laid off by Gannett, PLEASE report your layoff and tell us how we can help.
There are so, so many people who want to help you and it is not brave to suffer in silence.
Here’s the link to report a layoff:
In August, Palm Beach County parents reached out to me worried about having to put info about athletes' periods into an online registration form.
The form was based on the paper forms from the
@FHSAA
, which distributes a standard form across FL to all public school athletes.
Thanks for the support, y'all.
Working on a catch-all story today to bring folks up to speed on this issue and answer big questions. FHSAA board meeting is Feb. 26-27 so I'll have new info then.
If you'd like to continue following this issue, I've compiled the links to my stories from October - present in this document. If you're a j with a national media outlet covering this issue, please attribute + link!
I'll update as new stories come out.
In November, the
@FHSAA
board of directors took up the issue. One member wanted to scrap the qs all together.
But the director suggested the board send it to their sports medicine committee (made up of doctors) to get their input before making a decision
Hello, it's your friendly neighborhood Type A pal here.
Here's a thread of helpful spreadsheets I've made over the years that have made my life easier. Feel free to rt, take a look, and make a copy for yourself using the links below.
BREAKING: The
@FHSAA
has called a special board meeting Thursday where they'll consider scrapping the questions about athletes' menstrual history.
A complete reversal from a committee's suggestion to make the qs mandatory to answer and turn into schools.
🧵: Seizures. Asthma. Allergies.
#Florida
student athletes have to report all of these in their annual physical form.
But female athletes are also asked about their periods: When they got their last one, how many weeks are between them, etc.
Why?
Nine months ago, we scrambled to help 400 people laid off by
@Gannett
. We created an ad-hoc community aid network to support folks with financial assistance, job leads, professional networking, insurance aid and moral support.
Today, we're in

It’s my First First Day of School* as an education reporter!!!! 🍎 📚✏️🚌
*yes I had dreams last night about going to all the wrong schools, forgetting my homework (??) and showing up on the wrong day
Not-so-friendly reminder that
@Gannett
proposed a pay scale that starts at $40K for new employees and goes up to $50K... after TEN years of service to the company.
This is why we're fighting for better. We have to.
While CEO Mike Reed got a raise last year, Gannett’s last salary offer to our newsroom staff at the bargaining table included a *lower pay scale* than we have now.
Good morning (I am inexplicably awake).
The
@FHSAA
board of directors meets in a few hours to discuss removing all qs about athletes' menstrual history from physical eval forms.
I'm focused on getting a story up, but may have time to send some live updates. Watch this space.
contrary to what recent pieces in The Atlantic and The Cut may suggest, I promise journalists can be really good pals to other people and not silently judge them for decades and then drag them in print for everyone to see
Sitting out today’s
@Gannett
town hall because we can’t ask meaningful questions of our company leadership (like how many people actually lost their jobs last week).
#AnswerUsMike
Not sure who needs to hear this, but if you're a member of a newsroom union and your company's CEO thanks you in a town hall for working during "employee actions" last week ... ~ * you're a scab * ~
I am honored have to received the award for in-depth reporting named in Lucy Morgan’s honor last night from the

Good morning dark and early from Palm Beach Gardens, where local physicians are gathering to address the growing number of COVID cases in Florida and advocate for masking and vaccinations.

@pbpost
Also, edit that is ancillary to the story but important: There were 15 cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. on 2/13/20 !!
I didn’t mean to minimize this in my earlier tweet! Pandemic restrictions and lockdowns had not begun in the part of the U.S. I was in.
remember when selling things on Facebook Marketplace was like a fun and convenient way to get rid of stuff you didn’t need and now it’s like the seventh circle of hell only with half a dozen strangers who leave you on read and also try to scam you

me after we have we have two (2) days that are a little bit rainy in south florida:
As soon as she starts to speak I realize I’ve misunderstood — she is going to propose to him. He is totally disengaged and honestly looks uncomfortable.
She orders a martini and he orders a sprite. I scurry away.
Because the

The problem? That's not true.
I know because I've reviewed every single state's form.
I take the champagne out of the cooler and put it back behind the bar. I tell the kitchen to 86 the engagement dessert.
I bring them the bill and she politely looks at him. He looks away and SHE PUTS DOWN HER CARD for a martini and a sprite.
Community aid update + how to help 🗣️
It's been 17 days since the

Since then, our community aid team has distributed direct financial assistance to help with emergency costs, organized an online job board and established a moral support letter writing network.
