I have a degree in English. Every time my profs were explaining symbolism and foreshadowing in books, I wanted to know how they knew that was the author's intention.
Now, as a writer, I'm convinced most of it was bunk. 😄😉
If you were a young reader, which books were your first binge reads? I couldn't get enough Nancy Drew mysteries. During summer break, I'd read two a day.

For anyone who graduated HS 10+ years ago:
Are you friends with anyone from HS? Not just online, but you actually talk or hang out?
My sisters both have a few friends, but I can't think of a single one.

Do you remember any of the opening lines of books that you've read?
I know there's a lot of emphasis on a killer first line, but I'll be honest: in 45+ years and thousands of books read, I only remember two (and few people would consider them great).
I'm ready for some employment diversity in romance novels--no more coffee shop/bakery owners, writers, or contractors please.
What are some careers you'd like to see in a romance?

FB has suspended me for 24 hours for violating community standards.
My crime?
Liking people's posts. Apparently I liked too many in one day, so I could be a spammer. 🙄
Saw this post and loved it: what words do you use when you don't want to swear but want to express yourself?
My mom always went with cripe. I'm a big fan of 'cheese and crackers' and 'son of a biscuit.'
Anyone else not really care about the eclipse tomorrow? I didn't understand the hype last time, and I don't get it now. 🤷♀️
I'll likely be editing with my lights on.
Saw a tweet about a non-romance reader knocking the genre because of the predictable happy ending.
So true.
I'm now working on a mystery novel in which we never find the bad guy.
From an editor friend at a publishing house:
Please don't use Google Docs. Use Word.
Apparently even after you copy/paste it to Word, there are a lot of things that make the document difficult to work with.
🤣🤣🤣 I have a timeline issue in one of my books (I'm not telling which--you'll have to figure it out). Since then, I've started keeping a calendar handy when I write.
Anyone else?
Saw a post asking who you'd want to talk to on a plane.
No one.
I'm a raging extrovert, but when I travel, I get into a work zone and don't want to be interrupted. Anyone else?
For real, though: whenever I sell something on eBay, I can't help thinking that the buyer has my DNA and fingerprints on the packaging tape. What if they use them for nefarious purposes??
Went to hear an author speak recently. When she said, "Writing a book is surprisingly easy," I stopped listening.
Yes, writing a book is easy.
Writing a GOOD book ... not so much.

Saw this post and it made me think about WHY I write:
Is it still worth it to continue writing and publishing books after you realise that you will never become rich and famous?
#WritingCommunity

What do YOU think? Why do you write?
Seriously, though--as a freelance editor and former acquisitions editor, I've never read an author's first manuscript that didn't still need a professional developmental edit (writer friends and English teachers don't cut it.)
2024 hasn't quite started the way I'd hoped, so I'm not very focused or motivated. With that in mind, breakfast for dinner: yay or nay?

Does your SO read your work?
My hubby doesn't really read fiction, so he hasn't. He's offered to, but I told him it's not necessary--he's not my target audience.
What about you?
X: I need book recs!

, what other creative outlets do you have? I love admiring visual arts but have no talent. I'm not the greatest, but I love playing the piano when I can.
While I adore "breakfast" foods (pancakes, oatmeal, etc.) I have no qualms about eating any food any time of the day.
This morning, I cooked the ground beef I was supposed to use Tuesday and make a lovely cheesy saucey pasta thing.
Anyone else okay with the nontraditional way?
I used to go to the movies ALL the time. The last movie I saw in the theater was the last Mission Impossible. Past that, I can't remember.
What's the last movie you saw in the theater?
I did it.
This stupid manuscript has taken me two stupid years, but I FINALLY finished the first draft.
I already know who stars in the next book. I can't wait!
New favorite unsolicited X DM:
Stranger: do you design your own covers?
Me: I'm all set, thanks.
St: bud do you design your own?
Me: I'm all set, thanks. 😊
St: don't ignore me. do you--
BLOCK!
Do you have a fun exchange to share?
Is there an "autocorrect" your phone always makes that's wrong?
I've NEVER used 'foe' in a text message, but every time I write 'for,' "autocorrect" changes it.
Why??
I finished the first draft of my WIP last month. I vowed not to touch it for a month before editing.
The first two weeks were easy. I'm finding it more difficult to stay away now.
How long do you wait between finishing your draft and editing it?

Where are my romance writers??

Me: Hopeful fiction with a healthy dose of romance. 🌶️

Great question from
@DavidBadurina
#Authors
: if you had an extra $500 to spend on anything writing related, what would it be, and why?
(ideas: books, software, computer, editing, cover design, etc.)
I'm going to be on the local TV morning show tomorrow and I'm freaking out! Peri-menopause has not been kind, and the weight gain is crazy. I have so few clothes that fit anymore. 😢
I tell ya, my wardrobe is NOT something I thought I'd stress about as a writer.
Do you (can you) work on more than one manuscript at a time?
I can't work on more than one in a day (edit one, then switch to writing another), but I can spend a few days on one, then move to the next.
"The aim is not to make money, the aim is not to be a bestseller, the aim is to change people's lives.
No. The aim is to do whatever you want.
Write for your family? Go for it!
Shooting for bestseller? Yes!
Only writing to entertain people? Perfect!
Your goals are your own.
Confession: I've been baking for almost 40 years. I rejected parchment paper until last year.
What was I thinking?? My life will never be the same.

I've said it before, but it's all over Twitter again, so here it is again:
There's no word you should NEVER use and ALWAYS cut from your manuscript, even adverbs. The trick is to learn when and how to use them effectively.

conference I went to, the organizer said no writer can resist two things:
A book store or an office supply store
Is that true for you?
(100% me)
An author on X recently lamented cutting 20K words of his draft because it was backstory; it felt like wasted time to have written and cut it.
Nothing is wasted time if it improves your story. Being able (and willing) to identify and cut weak writing should be celebrated!
I had no idea how many single ex-military men were available and looking for a good woman until I started an Instagram account. 🙄

Is this a fair eval of authors?
"Authors who can't answer a question about their world don't take their books as seriously as their fans."
I can't answer every question about THIS world! People will always wonder about things I never thought about. I'm okay with that.
In a FB writing group, a writer was completely distraught because everyone kept telling her a novel needs to be told from only one point-of-view character.
1. Not true. Use as many POVs as your story needs.
2. I don't know who "everyone" is, but stop talking to them.
"It only took me 2 days to read, because I didn't want to put it down!"

If publishers didn't encourage you to be on social media, would you?
I'd probably stay on FB (because my family and friends are there), but I have my doubts about the rest.
Saw this beautiful story. Wanted to share and tag the author ... except this account doesn't exist. "Kate" has two accounts, neither with a blue check and neither with any tweets.
On the plus side, she's apparently inspiring others to be creative.
What the heck, Amazon?
Search my book title, nothing appears.
Search my name (make sure it doesn't autocorrect), nothing appears.
Click on my bookmarked links? There they are.
Gah.
