BRIDGE NEWS.
So, in case you didn't know, there's a toll bridge linking Cheshire to Greater Manchester. It costs 12p to use - as it has done since 1890.
But now owner Peel Ports want to increase that toll to £1 to pay for improvement works. [1/7]
To bring in the increase, Peel Ports has to submit a document to the gov, known as a Transport and Works Act Order - or a TWAO if you like your acronyms.
They've now done this and you can read it here:
[2/7]
The bridge spans Warrington and Trafford council areas. Warrington says it "strongly opposes" the plans while Trafford says it is "concerned to ensure that any changes represent a fair deal for the local community". [3/7]
Charlotte Nichols - the Labour MP for Warrington North - says she'll formally object to the order and "oppose any regulation that the government brings forward in parliament to implement one". [4/7]
Peel Ports says "12p per crossing is clearly insufficient" as it need to do works to both improve the condition of the bridge and introduce a free-flow (eg automatic) toll system. [5/7]
And, if you read the consultation document in the TWAO, there's a lot of support for these works and bringing in an automatic toll system - just not for the cost increase. [6/7]

The bridge pictured is not the toll bridge, the actual toll bridge is about ten or fifteen feet from the toll booth and built from stone, peel ports are taking the piss if they think it's worth £1 to cross it, the metal bridge is nothing to do with the toll charge🤔
@kaleighnews
As
@nessie1570
has pointed out, the actual toll is a small stone bridge - not this. This bridge has a crossing every second at busy times. THOUSANDS per day. £1 per car would generate far more than that stone bridge needs for upkeep. The whole thing is about 2m across.
