“If a person is living out his Personal Legend, he knows everything he needs to know. There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.”
-the alchemist, The Alchemist
I've always hated the way our profession makes it hard for clients to find their financial advisor when they change firms--I get why firms do this but I find it ridiculous to make it difficult for clients to find their advisor.
So, I did this:
Before the day ends, I want to thank everyone who took the time to leave a comment, send a DM, text, or email.
🙏
It's been an honor to have been included in this year's
@investmentnews
40 Under 40. So many talented leaders in this class and I'm thrilled to stand next to them.
This guy has no idea how unhappy and unfulfilled in his professional life he was.
The suit. The tie (they made me change into this one). Even the haircut. 🤦♂️
This was the day of a photoshoot for a Forbes award we “won” aka paid advertisement.
Life is so much better now.
met with a client today getting ready to move into a long term care facility.
he's been retired 9 years--1 year in begin to have health issues that forced him to move in with his daughter.
watching him decline has been sad--I can't imagine how he and his wife have felt...
Great write up on
@michaelbatnick
in Barron’s.
The Irrelevant Investor was one of the blogs that inspired me to start writing.
Michael will always have a special spot in my professional journey. I appreciate him always making time for me.
Sentimental tweet: Roman turns 9 today and last night I realized that half of his full-time home life is over.
The last 9 years have flown by and in the same amount of time, he’ll be off to college. 😭
It’s not just any exciting day for one of my favorite rappers,

FA’s don’t lose sight of how personal finance is and that our job is not to force the spreadsheet answer on clients.
The art of what we do is finding the balance between spreadsheet and personal preferences and emotions.
Three years ago today I resigned from my previous employer and filed for RL Wealth Management, which would later become RLS Wealth Management, to become a business.
Man time flies when you're having fun!
“It was pretty cool you had the podcast and blog to help us vet you.”
-Final comment in a meeting with new clients.
Ignore the haters. Being yourself, creating content and being genuine works.
Unpopular opinion: The profession would benefit from smaller, specialized, niche advisory firms.
I'm not a beer drinker but think craft breweries for financial advisors.
More collaboration, support, and abundant mentalities would bring more and better planning to families.
Leo trying to give me a heart attack—luckily I saw this AFTER he did it. All I could see was the multiple ways he could have gotten hurt.
And then I realized he threw the ball off the ceiling, caught it and dunked it. Impressed.
Today was tough.
Being a financial advisor is a lot of number crunching and analytical thinking.
BUT, it is also a relationship business and losing clients who become like family is never easy.
Working from the townhome we own and rent out (not by choice--bad luck buying in 2006) getting maintenance work done.
About to drop $2k, which has inspired a blog post about real estate and my personal experience.
My tenant is chilling on the couch w/out a care in the world.

fam would you help me shower
@angcastelli
with some birthday love?!? It’s taken awhile for her to understand our relationship, but she gets it 😀
Happy birthday to my amazing, hard-working, business-owning, loving-mother, wife!
Please help me with my big bro
@ReformedBroker
a Happy Birthday!!
He’s paved the way for many of us, helped change the game, and genuinely wants the profession to get better and for us all to succeed. Thanks for all you do.
Enjoy your day, DJB!
Two years ago after taking Roman and Leo Trick-Or-Treating,
@angcastelli
and I went to the hospital b/c she was having contractions.
Arrived at 8:10 and Silas arrived at 8:27 👀. We barely made it.
Hard to imagine our family without this personality.
Following several injuries Brazilian pianist João Carlos Martins lost the ability to move his fingers.
But after more than 20-years of being unable to play — a pair of “bionic” gloves are bringing him back.
He’s crying. I’m crying. You’re crying...
Why didn't anyone warn me rolling funds out of
@TIAA
is an hour-long process? 🙄
I can't imagine how long this process would be if I wasn't on the phone with my client.
Talking to clients about what's happening in the crypto space, helping them gift their grandson BTC for his bday, and they told me about seeing
@LongNeckieLady
on the Today show.
Showed them how to navigate and buy one and now I have this beauty.
I rarely ask for retweet, likes, or shares. BUT, I’d love to get this in front of as many people as possible— spark some conversations and maybe make a few people uncomfortable.
I’d appreciate your help!
Just talked with a local index-annuity only guy. Told me he is getting his 65 because of his 2550 annuity clients he should easily get 50 M AUM and “that at even .75 that’s a lot of money for doing nothing.”
This is why we need a career path for our profession.
Annual trip to my client’s lakehouse.
For young advisors, slanging product or selling performance doesn’t create relationships like this.
Build relationships, not businesses. Those relationships will become your business—focus on on planning.
Pretty special when your kids get to spend time with people who have made a significant impact on you and are irreplaceable forces in your life.
Thanks for the time
@Downtown
!
I lucked out with my first and only hire.
This is my Christmas present from Darlene, my Director of Operations. I love this cartoon and reference it all of the time, so she drew it and included a card saying “Thank you for never giving up.”
I mean, C’mon.
Spent nearly three hours on the couch with this little guy—he’s been fighting a fever the last couple of days.
Moms and Dads out there will probably agree-we HATE to see them not feeling well, but there’s something special about those under-the-weather snuggles.
I grew up loving Calvin and Hobbes--I still have all of the old books. I need to revisit them because as I see comics like this I realize how insightful and deep Calvin and Hobbes are.
The Ancient Greek word "telos" means end or goal.
From this root, philosophers have defined two types of activities in life:
1. Telic: With end or goal.
2. Atelic: Without end or goal.
Here's why we all need to understand them:
You’ve seen the “advice” of don’t save until student loans have been paid off—it’s horrible.
By commenting and retweeting it you’re only helping him get more people to sign up for his class and get horrible advice.
Part of me thinks it was all part of the marketing plan
Going through the photos on my phone and came across this clip from my high school highlight tape.
I made this myself using two VCRs to send to colleges trying to get some offers.
Been shooting my shot, literally and figuratively, since I was a teenager.
Politics aside...this is not leadership. Leaders build people up, not take cheap shots at people doing good things.
I don't care if you're a Democrat, Republican, or any other party member--you've got expect/demand/want more from a leader.
SMH.

I’ve consumed
@TR401
’s interview with
@ReformedBroker
at least three times now & thought I’d share some imprortant business-related takeaways for advisors.
If you don't believe in the power of video for building your brand and business, I just finished a meeting with a new client and she specifically mentioned videos she saw as WHY she reached out to work with me.
This is why I'm so bullish on video to tell our stories!
Disruption to the custodians can't come quick enough. My Director Of Operations was just told by
@TDAmeritrade
we're on a TEN DAY turnaround for cash management paperwork. 🤯
This will be speeding up the growth of my
@altruist
accounts.
The day almost got away without me wishing
@angcastelli
a public happy birthday. Twitter doesn’t give me enough characters to brag about how lucky the boys and I are to have her in our lives.
I love this picture of her and the boys—they simply adore her.
Just held a fit meeting with a HNW couple looking for an
#advisor
. It was clear I was not a fit, so I gave them some suggestions on finding the right advisor and we parted friends. LOVE IT!
What a sight to wake up to.
I can’t wait for the authors from the
@theadvisorgc
to get the spotlight with our first community written book.
And I can’t sing
@ShannaDue
’s praise enough…this does not happen without her leadership and love for the project.
Enjoy an entertaining and educational conversation between
@billsweet
and myself about taxes--don't roll your eyes, I promise you won't regret taking the time to learn about the value of tax awareness.
Well, can’t show only the good. I’ve been a father for 8 1/2 years and we made our first trip to the ER for stitches—the little guy took a spill and is gonna need some stitches.
Thankful we only have to deal with this, but worst moment as a parent.
We were supposed to be in NYC for spring break—obviously that didn’t happen. So tonight we’re having NY-ish pizza (best we could find in our area) and watching Home Alone 2.
I wanted New Jack City, but don’t think the boys are old enough yet.
