Surprised and honoured to receive this tonight! Thanks to my family for putting up with my pay equity rants, & my editors and everyone at

One thing I love about the COVID-19 news conferences across Canada - stay with me here 😜 - is how many of the Chief Medical Officers are women. 💪💃

readers may have noticed my byline absent from the paper lately. That’s because I’ve been busy learning the ropes of my new beat — parenting. Meet Victoria. 💕
Volunteers with Project Kindness took to the streets of St. John’s with shovels and snowblowers today to clear driveways for anyone who hasn’t had a chance/aren’t able to do it themselves.
@StJohnsTelegram
Honestly, when government news releases include guidelines for reporters asking questions, such as "keep your preamble to a minimum" it only makes me want to keep my preamble nice and long. Government doesn't get to tell reporters what to do. Period.

Today marks 17 months of nursing for us. Posting this to help normalise nursing in public because babies shouldn’t have to eat in a bathroom stall. 🙃 (Photo taken last summer)

Today marks 5 years that I've been reporting with

. It's been such a privilege. This has been my dream job since I was a child, and I count my lucky stars every day that I get to tell the stories that are important to my fellow Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.❤️

Was quiet at harbour a few mins ago. 2 U.S. Air Force aircraft at YYT now. I’m signing off; hope to write good news tomorrow. All of us in NL are all too familiar with the danger, unpredictability & power of the ocean. I’m wishing the very best to SAR crews, Titan men & families.

I’m excited to get back to work

on Monday with a new beat — provincial politics. In this role, I want to lead, investigate, and be a conversation starter — not simply respond to govt. news releases.

I cried at work again this morning (I often do). I think it’s important in this business. Compassion is paramount. We talk to people every day who are experiencing their highest highs or lowest lows. It’s easy to become desensitized, but it’s best to keep our hearts open. ❤️
You guys, our 2.5-year-old coloured this entirely by herself. I feel like it’s really good for that age?! Is it? I have no idea how well children that age stay inside the lines. 🤷🏻♀️ I feel like she’s brilliant at everything, but clearly I have a bias. 😂

I still haven’t processed this. I grew up in a tiny rural community where the dream of simply being a journalist in St. John’s at our province’s daily paper felt big. I could never have imagined brushing shoulders with top reporters from across the country at a Toronto gala. /1
As a parent it is my responsibility to recognize that my child is an individual with human rights. Prohibited grounds of discrimination under the Human Rights Act include gender identity and expression. Children’s rights are human rights.
NEW | As a reporter, I prefer to ask others to share their feelings rather than share my own. But yesterday a woman on the radio said how common it is for people to struggle during the perinatal period, yet we rarely talk about it. So, I decided to talk.
Geez people, don't write The Telegram's obituary and mourn us yet. We're still here doing a stellar job with an incredible newsroom. We got a punch in the gut, not murdered. 🙄
CCGS Terry Fox is currently docked in St. John’s harbour on standby, loading search and rescue equipment and personnel should assistance in the search and rescue of the Titan submersible be required. More updates here:

issues in our province, or ways NL can be improved, but tonight we took the long way home with the windows down, and the cool, salty air left my hair in a mess, and all I kept thinking is how lucky we are to live in this place. Home. ❤️
Today is my last day
@StJohnsTelegram
until Aug. 15. I'm taking a brief childcare-related leave of absence while V's wonderful dayhome takes a very well-deserved summer break. I'm looking forward to lots of sunny snuggles, & coming back to work refreshed and refocused. /1
When I was pregnant and envisioning maternity leave life, I pictured lazily swinging with my baby in the backyard, and finally having time to write that book. The reality is that I’m lucky if I manage to find time for a shower every now and then. 🙃
Too many people in politics (not just politicians but also those surrounding them) are too focused on “playing politics” — “the game” — rather than authentically engaging with and helping the people they represent.
News release from Unifor says it's informed Loblaw that grocery members on strike in Newfoundland are willing to assist in any way to get perishables out of stores and into hands of not-for-profit organizations who can distribute the food.
I’m at Confederation Building where provincial budget is supposed to be delivered today but it’s delayed due to protesting fish harvesters blocking entrances. Here, what appears to be a public servant tries to enter and confrontation ensues.

After two months of

, I’ve concluded that whoever invented the idea “sleep while baby sleeps” obviously had a hired housekeeper, chef and errand runner. It’s the only explanation.
A meteorologist just mentioned a “significant area of icing” for tomorrow.
For those of you unfamiliar with Newfoundland, that’s not near as delicious as it sounds.

Did anyone who attended the budget lockup get an explainer on this surreal infograph? A family of 5 with a household income of $16K does NOT have $1K floating around to spend on physical activities. One of many incongruities in this. 🧐
I went to two protests today. In Mount Pearl, Yellow Vest protestors and counter-protestors stood on either side of a road. There were no clashes. Just some folks w/ signs signalling their msgs. Downtown I encountered this. Welcome to Newfoundland, Canada, folks.
I know many families w/ toddlers. I only know 2 paying $10. I know several moms who can’t return to work b/c they can’t find any child care. It’s misleading to say “$10-a-day Child Care Now a Reality for Families,” per the news release. It’s a reality for SOME families.

There’s a large gathering of Dominion workers blocking entrances at the Pearlgate Plaza location this morning in Mount Pearl. A small group just started singing Twisted Sisters’ “We’re Not Gonna Take It”.
Our daughter, age 2, danced in her first ever dance recital tonight at the Arts & Culture Centre. Her class did it all by themselves (without parents) in front of a full house! We’re so proud ❤️ Way to go to all of the dancers who worked hard all year for this moment! 🩰💐👏
Rod “Cocker” Dunn, the “Jiffy Caaaaaabs” man takes calls on his last dispatching shift after 39 years. He’s been called a St. John’s legend and icon, but he says he just wants to make sure people get where they need to go.

“If you want to recruit teachers, the first thing is: can they afford to live on the job that...you're offering? Quarter time is not. And I've known of units that are down as (low as) 0.1 (per cent). Unacceptable," said NDP leader Jim Dinn.

Every year around this time I’m reminded how thankful I am the Bowring brothers decided to donate a bunch of land for a park. And thanks to all the groundskeepers for doing such a top notch job on the flower beds, etc. Especially love the hyacinths! ☀️

Becoming a parent is such a trip.
I have to pee all the time. I have heartburn. I’m surviving on basically no sleep because I can no longer get comfortable. My hands and feet are swollen.
Yet I’ve never been so happy or excited. 💕 T-4.5 weeks! 🎉

During Stormageddon I stepped outside one day about halfway through the SOE and heard the birds singing. I live on a busy street, normally just hear cars. Gave me hope. Today I heard the birds singing hope again. Made me smile. I hope you all get a reason to smile today.

An international producer in St. John’s to cover the Titan search just asked me where the sailors go for drinks after work. All I could offer was George Street. As a retired captain’s daughter, I feel like I should have done better. So, where are you local sailors drinking today?
One thing I found interesting from yesterday’s rate mitigation presser was the reaction from Premier Furey when Michael Connors asked why the number of media questions were getting cut down.

I’ve seen far too many cars on my street with ppl who appear to be just out for a look. The SOE remains in effect, and I’m sure will remain longer if ppl go out unnecessarily. Videos of emergency vehicles stuck behind cars. We’re better than this, St. John’s.

never feels like a celebration to me. Not until every one of us is safe with the person who should respect us the most. Not until every one of us sees people like us in the legislature. Not until every one of us is paid our true and equitable value. Then I will celebrate.
Called St. John's Regional Fire Dept to get an update on a few situations, and they are so busy with "several scenes," as they put it, that there was literally no one available to talk to media right now.
Thank you to all emergency crews working through this!

You can plan childcare for those days well in advance because they happen every year. Right now a bunch of people (myself included) are scrambling last-minute to try to get childcare lined up for Monday. I’d argue this decision disproportionately affects working women.

AAHP (union that represents N.L. healthcare professionals) just announced it's no longer participating in conciliation talks with govt, who they say isn't truly listening, and is readying for possible job action. They want pay equity — equal pay for work of equal value.

I had a lot of fun with this. Have a read to learn the stories behind some of the oldest trees in St. John's.
And if you're looking for something to do one day this summer, why not check them out in person?
There's even a handy map.
Mom is babysitting V this week, and overhearing them looking out the window after breakfast with Mom telling her, “It’s a mauzy day,” makes me feel grateful we have parents within driving distance who can pass down bits of our culture, even if it’s just a word which I never say.
Thank you to the NLESD for saying this! The fact that it has to be said at all is ridiculous, but apparently there are still some people out there who need to hear it.

Govt determined to deliver budget. Police in riot gear at Confed. Reporters told be inside for budget. Labour leaders treating protest as picket line. I’m in union. Sought advice. Union advised reporters in unique position, should attend lock-in to keep public informed.

Another update looking at the Marine Traffic website. Again, I’m not an expert in using this site, but I hope this is helpful for you to see some of the assets that are currently helping with the search for the Titan submersible.
I spoke with sex workers in St. John's who told me that

has them out of work and worried about how they'll afford basic necessities, such as groceries. They wish govt. would give them the same help it's giving everyone else.

First, Canada’s chief public health officer is a woman. Provincially, we’ve got NL, NB, PEI, Alberta, BC, and NWT. 46% of the provincial CMOs are women, plus we’ve got Dr. Tam at the top. That’s pretty well parity! 🎉

Imagine being a literal billionaire and spending your time bullying people on the internet instead of giving away most of your money and having everyone love you for it because literally no one needs billions of dollars??? Why is that so hard? Genuinely perplexed by it all.
I think the biggest positive to working from home (for me personally) has been having more time in the morning to make breakfast that isn’t just coffee and maybe a slice of toast.
