Iโm excited to announce that today is the first day of my new job at NASAโs Jet Propulsion Laboratory! I look forward to a future of planetary exploration! ๐๐ช๐
@NASAJPL
My Juno Participating Scientist Proposal was selected!!!! I'm joining
@NASAJuno
!
I'll be using a combination of theoretical models and Juno data to figure out how the wacky geology of Io, Europa, an Ganymede "contaminate" gravity data. (1/6)
Watching the data stream down from
#DARTMission
via the Deep Space Network (DSN) at
@NASAJPL
!
T-minus 1 hour, 15 minutes until DART impacts an asteroid!
My new sketch of
@NewHorizons2015
โs small Kuiper Belt object,
#MU69
! Itโs a glimpse into the discussions going on behind the scenes: what do the shapes and colors mean and what geologic processes are at play? We will soon find out!

Just discovered this NASA webpage that has transparent PNG icons of a ton of spacecraft... perfect for putting lil spacecraft in your planetary white papers
NASA is using my sketches! I guess this is a good time to announce that Iโll be officially joining the New Horizons team as a resident artist, and will be sketching the MU69 encounter!
The
@NASANewHorizons
spacecraft that flew past Pluto in 2015 is on its way to its next target: a distant, icy body in the Kuiper Belt. Now, new data hints that this object might have an orbital companionโฆa small moon! Get the details:
Franรงois ForgetโEarth & Pluto both have snow-capped mountains, but the origin of the snow is different. Earth: adiabatic rising, cooling, and condensing of H2O-rich air at high altitude. Pluto: mixing of atmospheric CH4 with cold boundary layer, and condensing.
@NewHorizons2015
Just submitted an
@LPSC2018
abstract (
#2981
) about sketching science! I plan on showing our evolving views of Pluto and Ceres over the past three years, as recorded by my sketches!
Buckle up folks, we're going for a drive on the Moon.
NASA's next strategic lunar mission: Enduranceโa concept for traversing the Moon's South PoleโAitken Basin and delivering ~100-kg of samples (!) to
@NASAArtemis
astronauts at the south pole.
#PlanetaryDecadal
(1/20)
One of my personal highlights for the
#PlanetaryDecadal
โ it contains my first real collaboration with
@dearestantoine
!
Here's some beautiful mixed-media schematic diagrams for the interior structure of Io and Europa (from Q8 [Chapter 11] in the
#PlanetaryDecadal
):
A key part of the
#PlanetaryDecadal
is prioritizing future robotic missions for exploring the Solar System. Buried in the new report are a set of 12 concept studies that were done in secret during the report. These complement the set of pre-Decadal concepts...
As of right now, we have no idea what
#UltimaThule
looks like. Occultations gave hints, Light curves are flat, and Ultima is smaller than 1 LORRI pixel. That will hopefully change tomorrow.
In the meantime, Iโll draw all the shapes!

Just watched the new episode of Star Trek: Discovery, and I thought I recognized a map they showed of some uninhabited world that featured prominently in the episode. They used a map of Pluto!!!!

Sketch-Up is out, and itโs about

Alissa EarleโPlutoโs climate changes on a variety of timescales, from diurnal (Pluto day = 6.4 days), seasonal (Pluto year = 248 yr), to Milankoviฤ-style cycles (t~3 Myr). These varying insolation geometries likely control volatile transport and geology.

Nine years ago, I came to
@NASAJPL
for the first time to develop a โpretendโ mission concept in Team-X as a Planetary Science Summer School student.
Last week, I went back to Team-X as a customer, developing a new concept that might be real someday. What an amazing ride. ๐
Paul SchenkโThe recent Ganymede flyby has enabled the creation of new stereo topography for select regions. Lots of interesting things, like a large dome very nearly aligned with Jupiter, and not associated with surface geology. No clue what it is!
#LPSC2022
Lauren SchurmeierโRadial labyrinth are ~100 km diameter, 500 meter tall, eroded dome structures on Titan. They could be the surface expression of liquid water laccoliths.

Sean HsuโCassini dust analyzer has shown that dust grains get carried off the ring plane by Saturnโs magnetic field, and rain on to the planet at mid-latitudes. Ice rains out at the equator. More dust is raining out than ice (3:1); rings may be self-cleaning!
Getting exited for the new images of Ultima Thule! I decided to do a quick painting, depicting Thule's surface. Hope it has craters!
