Grateful. Today in 1993 was my 1st day at NY1 News. Grateful to work at something I love. Grateful for our viewers. Grateful to all those I’ve learned from: Other weather people, reporters, anchors, producers, tech folks, managers and bosses. Grateful.
Why do we have 90s in September ? It's Ruschell ! She LOVED hot weather and this is her smiling down on us. I'm so sad today but grateful to have known and worked with her. World is poorer today without her. The smile and spirit will live forever.
We have some deeply sad and personal news to report.
Ruschell Boone, an Emmy award-winning journalist and our beloved colleague here at NY1, passed away Sunday due to complications related to pancreatic cancer. She was 48.
Today marks the 30th anniversary of NY1 News. I was the first meteorologist. In my 29 years, I’ve seen 13 blizzards and a total of 72 feet of snow! I joined NY1 in March of 1993. 6 months after they launched.
Break out the shovels and plows. Biggest snow for NYC in 3 years hits Tuesday AM. 6” likely. Big shift in weather models overnight. Worst is 6am to 11am. Snow will collect quickly Tuesday AM. Plows won’t be able to keep up.
Excited to welcome Guy Brown to NY1 and the the NY1 weather team ! Got any NYC advice for
@GuyBrownWeather
? Best pizza ? Best neighborhood ? Best season for NYC ?
You onboard ? See you next year. Winter is over for NYC. It will be in the 40s or better every day through at least next week. NOAA outlook calls for above average temps for the rest of the month and the start of March. 4 weeks until we set the clocks ahead for daylight saving.
Turn out the lights ! Migration alert tonight for NYC. BirdCast large numbers of migrating birds will move through our area tonight between 11pm and 6am.
Here’s a shot of the last full moon of the decade. It will officially be full at 12:12am on 12/12. It’s called the cold moon. Share your shot with

Turn out the lights ! Migration alert for NYC 11pm to 6am. Turning out lights can help save birds. Watch Live at 10 with

on Spectrum/Optimum cable, Apple TV, Roku, Xumo and the Spectrum News App.
Get ready NYC: Surge of smoke is getting set to move in this afternoon. Conditions will be as bad or worse than yesterday. The smoke won’t totally clear until Sunday.
Lewis Dodley - a NY1 staple since our channel's first day - announced that he is leaving the anchor desk after more than 30 years.
"NY1 is a window to New York City, and to be a face you see here has truly been an honor."
Any advice for him ? Twitter-verse, Let’s welcome
@MAutovinoWx
He’s joining the Spectrum News NY1 Weather team. This Brooklyn native is back home. You’ll see him on Weekend Mornings with
@ShannanFerry
and
@RoccoNY1
and in weekday evenings.
Maybe they should stick to rating the best brunches in NYC & leave the science to the pros ? Btw, today’s weather models show nyc with rain/snow mix & heavy snow in the Poconos. Real news: Weekend winter storm is possible for NYC but too early to know if it’s a hit or miss
Say it ain't snow ! NYC could see 1-3" of snow on Monday. It will be a close call. Weather models show NYC on the northern edge of the storm. This is the "screw zone". Northern edge sometimes means no snow Sometimes it brings more. Reasonable worst case: 4-5".
Caught between the moon and NYC. Mars is easy to find tonight. Look for it just about the moon. It will be a red dot. Visible without binoculars or a telescope.
This is not ok. 7th straight weekend with rain for NYC.
@DeanMeminger
and
@ShannanFerry
are not feeling it. How about you ? Last dry weekend was Labor Day. For 2023, 71% of our weekends have had some rain.
Up all night ? NYC this might be the best chance you'll ever have to see the northern lights in the 5 boroughs. It's less than a 10% chance. 3-4am. Find a dark spot of the city with a view of the northern horizon. Give your eyes 15 minutes to adjust
For whoever needs to hear this. Sunrise will get earlier instead of later on Saturday for the 1st time since June. So far this month, we've gained 12 minutes of daylight.
Tune in at 1pm today to Spectrum News NY1 for an hour long special on how Climate Change is impacting our city. These are photos from when we filmed the special. Can you guess where this is ?
@ErickAdameOnTV
Leave it to the pros! How do meteorologists feel about the groundhog? We have years of physics, calculus and atmospheric dynamics…they have a furry face ? We’re fine with it. Just fine !
This just ain’t right. The high temperature Tomorrow in NYC will be about the same as it was on Christmas Day 2019. Seasons Greetings to all. Hope your shipping is done ?
NYC swamped by storms ! Climate change ? Well, not quite. One storm isn't climate change. Climate change is 6 of the 10 wettest years for NYC since 1990. Climate change is the doubling of the 2"+ rain events in NYC since 1950. Warmer air holds more moisture.
Sad ? Winter is mainly done for NYC: Today will be the coldest day for the next week or more. Next storms are rain not snow. We spring ahead the clocks in 3 weeks.
Super pink moon spotted ! No it’s not pink. It’s named that for the pink blossoms in April. Next month is the flower moon. In June: The strawberry moon.
Update: Accumulating snow is not in the cards for NYC today. Passing snow showers late this morning and early this afternoon. Dusting on the grass and cars at worse. Storm is staying south of NYC.
A good three days in the woods. Backpacked on the Appalachian trail in NJ. Finishes my 2023 backpacking season. Did over 200 miles in 6 months in four states. Ski season next !
Snow lovers won’t like this. The snow chance today for NYC is drying up. Latest data leaning to a few hours of snow showers with under an inch collecting. Last snow chance for the month.
Kitten takeover. This feed is now only about my new cats, Chewie and Xander. Kidding! Some showers for NYC this evening…little sprinkles during the day.
On the bright side ! Today the Earth is at its closest to the sun during the year. It’s called perihelion. We’re almost 3 million miles closer now than we will be in July when we’re at our furthest point…called aphelion.
