of SHE SAID, about how we broke the Weinstein story. Follow the women. DM for Signal.
Susan Faludi reviewed SHE SAID, starting with a fair question: why would anyone want to read one more word about Harvey Weinstein? We're honored and thrilled by her answers, which go far beyond me,
@mega2e
, or Weinstein.
Chris Smalls, fired from Amazon almost two years ago to the day, just popped champagne outside the NLRB offices where he and his peers won one of the greatest labor victories in a generation. “To the first Amazon union in history,” he said.
23 years for Harvey Weinstein.
@mega2e
and I just witnessed it for ourselves. Weinstein was cuffed to his wheelchair then rolled away. The women who testified sobbed afterwards. Irwin Reiter, his accountant of 30 yrs who secretly helped us break the story, sat just behind.
Backstory: Amanda Gorman had been struggling to write that poem. Then came the assault on the Capitol. That night she stayed up late and finished, certain of what she wanted to say.
When people say reparations are impossible, I think: well, I know someone who gets them. My grandmother. A Holocaust survivor, liberated almost 74 yrs ago. Gets a check every month from Germany. Has for decades. It's made a huge difference for her.
"I'm Harvey Weinstein-- you know what I can do."
Weinstein, whose signature throughout forty years of allegations was lack of accountability, has been declared guilty on two counts.
Better video of the feminist flash mob outside the courthouse where Weinstein is being tried. The message, in English and Spanish: the problem of sexual violence is global, and it’s systemic.
My grandmother, a 97-year old Holocaust survivor, has lost more than anyone I know and yet is the happiest person I know. Grateful beyond words to
@cbsthismorning
for sharing the story of how she survived and thrived.
Very few Holocaust survivors are still alive to share their experiences. One of them is 97-year-old Hana Kantor, who came to the U.S. after World War II.
She's the grandmother of

Here's her family's story of survival.
NEW from me & colleagues: Jared Kushner put bewildered 20-something volunteers with no disaster or medical experience at the forefront of PPE sourcing. The result: “bureaucratic cycles of chaos,” according to one who became a whistleblower.
I hope the world remembers that when the president of the United States refused to release his taxes, a group of journalists spent years reconstructing the truth, finding new ways in, and teaching us more with each scoop. This is reporting for the ages.
Jill Abramson has new evidence in the Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill case and an argument that he should be impeached "because of the lies he told, repeatedly and under oath" during confirmation.
Last night at our SHE SAID event in LA, a woman stood up and broke her NDA right then and there. Said it had been 20 years and she’d had enough.
We didn’t ask too many questions, bc we weren’t sure how far she wanted to go.
But thank you. We are thinking of you. Good luck.
This was us, two years ago today, about to push the button on the Weinstein story, unsure what would happen next. Thank you to our brave sources, everyone who has helped, and readers of SHE SAID. Such a relief for
@mega2e
and I to finally tell you the story of what happened.
Just published: The gravest problem with the way Amazon treats employees may be one you’ve never heard of. As the company hit record profits, it fired and underpaid employees who sought leaves for illness, new parenthood and life crises. (Thread.)
If you've read our stories about harassment among the famous and the elite, please promise me you'll also read this shattering tale set on Ford factory floors.
Please note that The National Enquirer's Dylan Howard, who threatened to publish the explicit photos of
@JeffBezos
, was Harvey Weinstein's "chief media enabler."
With
@jodikantor
@megantwohey
closing in on their first NYT story about the sexual allegations against him, Weinstein made a last plea for help from his chief media enabler, Dylan Howard of The Enquirer, email shows
Eight men, as old as 82, write with regret about how they sexually violated, coerced and took advantage of women years ago.
Their accounts are painful but insightful.
God it feels good to read something constructive and healing.
NEW: A former anti-abortion leader says that the recent Supreme Court leak was *not* the only recent breach.
He obtained word of the 2014 Hobby Lobby ruling after years of using faith & favors to gain access to the Court, he says.

Is there a handy term— like mansplaining or microaggression— to describe when someone likes a woman but defers anyway to others’ more negative views? Someone pls coin one quick, b/c I see this all the time, in reporting and in life.
This is a dispatch for history. About a mass grave of children. One killed on the soccer field. Another so young that an umbilical cord is still attached. By the last two international journalists in Mariupol, risking their lives to write.
@ap
Just published: We spent weeks investigating the complicity machine that Harvey Weinstein built. We've got his emails, the penile injections he made assistants procure, his threats, the powerful agents who knew and did nothing.
We’re in the courtroom waiting for Weinstein. For so long he had his own private system— fancy lawyers who paid to silence women, private investigators and spies. Now he answers to the same system as the rest of us.
Nothing says “Rosh Hashana” like my 94-year old grandmother, a Holocaust survivor, Facetiming in Yiddish.
No matter your faith, may you be inscribed for long life and a sweet new year.
One thing I'll never forget about journalism in this era: the supportive cards, calls, and high-fives from readers (including strangers who spot the NYT badge on the subway.) To the subscriber who just left me a beautiful voicemail: thanks for making my Friday.
Dramatic protest happening outside the Weinstein trial: a Chilean feminist anthem/dance gone viral/global, created "to show rape not just as a crime against an individual woman, but the expression of a larger social issue."
He served as a concentration camp armed guard.
Made it to the US. Lived on a quiet street in Tennessee.
And was just deported at 95 in what be may the last US Nazi case.
I interned for these Nazi hunters in college. They are the epitome of Never Forget.
Things we're staggered by:
The courage and impact of the women who came forward.
The changes we see stirring.
The work of all the other winners, and the might of a free and independent press.
This prize.
Something is happening with college journalism. The level of interest was already remarkable. Now a new generation of reporters are being forged by the pandemic. They're covering whole towns, beyond campus. And they seem unafraid of confronting power.
NEW: Ashley Judd is suing Harvey Weinstein for harming her career, allegedly labeling her a "nightmare" and costing her a lucrative Lord of the Rings role. More from

The north end of Prospect Park has turned into a dance party, and every few minutes screams of joy just roll across the park, like a wave at a baseball game
Two years after the breaking of the Weinstein story, there are still stories the public doesn’t know.
Some of the common assumptions are wrong.
Read Rowena Chiu, in her own words:
New: Meet Rev. Richardson, a hospice chaplain who had to rack up “productivity points” as she tended to the dying.
Her story illustrates the rise of the worker productivity score, one of the biggest expansions of employer power in generations. 🧵
NEW: The legal case against Weinstein was actually a long shot. It pushed the boundaries of sex crimes prosecutions.
That's why the verdict could reshape what cases are brought and which victims are heard.
From
@mega2e
and me, on what this day means:
Waitresses on the brutal logic of putting up with harassment by customers:
"I needed the $20 tip."
“A significant portion of my income is how men feel about me that day."
“If you want to make the money, you’ll learn to laugh.”
NEW: We asked janitors from airlines to offices to Disney how things are really being cleaned as coronavirus rages. Many raised alarms and revealed glaring problems. Dirty rags. Bathrooms that are not disinfected. (Thread)
Exclusive: this investigation took us all the way to Bezos and the heart of Amazon’s employment model. We have a lot of new information, and Twitter convention says I need to start shooting it out this second. But I don’t feel ready. (Thread.)
To summarize:
NYC schools appear safe
Indoor dining and gyms do not
It’s schools that have to close
Why are we about to stomp on a hard-won success story and end one of the only things that’s working?
This is what a real-life, current reparations statement looks like. It belongs to my grandma, a 97-year old victim of the Nazis. For over 50 years, she’s gotten $$ from the German government each month. “Fur Schaden” means “for harm”-- words that hint at a universe of loss.
One year after Weinstein, why is the
#metoo
discussion still so powerful and durable, lasting longer and going further than anyone predicted?
Because women keep revealing horror stories, like this nightmare account from the TV journalist Connie Chung.
Important development re E Jean Carroll's rape allegations against Trump: the two friends she confided in, Lisa Birnbach and Carol Martin, went on the record with

Dublin:
NEW: Chris Cuomo was fired three days after the network received a new accusation of sexual misconduct from a former junior colleague. This means that both Cuomo brothers have lost their positions in the wake of
#metoo
accusations.
Breaking: Roberta Kaplan, chair of Time's Up and co-founder of its legal defense fund, has resigned from the organization in the face of criticism over her ties to Cuomo's sexual harassment scandal.
Just called my grandmother to check in. Holocaust survivor, refugee, patriot, turning 95. She didn’t seem to have heard what happened and I didn’t tell her.
“I am a regular person... It all sounded like a rich person did this, but I’m just a little black girl from the South Side... We can all do this together.”
