All-hands video call with my Beijing office. 90% of people have Covid (up from 50% a few days ago). Some obviously miserable. Many nursing kids/parents at home. Our “work at home” policy is now “work at home if you’re well enough”. This thing came on like a runaway freight train.

Yesterday we were ordered to close our Beijing office and all employees work from home. This morning most of our 30+ staff reported their communities went into a 7-day lockdown. This is happening all across the city. Most government offices are apparently closed as well. Chaos!

Some believe the pull back on zero-Covid is a reaction to public protests. I disagree. With censorship, most people have been unaware of ongoing protests. It's all about a bleak economic outlook and a frantic effort to drive a tanking economy before it sinks even further.

This isn't always the case in China, but there is a fundamental lack of trust in the system. People just don’t want to get caught up in a police investigation, and fear there is too much risk in being a witness (or worse, a suspect) in a possible crime or legal violation.

Weekend in Zaozhuang (Tsaochuang). Had lunch with local friends 1 km from the derailment site of #ThePekingExpress . Nothing beats an 8 kuai ($1.15) bowl of hand-rolled Shandong noodles, veggies, and chicken. Making new (bandit) friends and checked out the local sorghum firewater.

Sure, guys, let's go back 100 years when China was in the middle of the chaotic and murderous Warlord Era beset by internecine fighting. Russia, too, in 1923 just came off a series of civil wars and famine that put the country in a near-state of ruin. History matters. Learn some.

"Right now there are changes, the likes of which we haven't seen for 100 years," Mr. Xi told Mr. Putin through an interpreter after the state dinner as the leaders bid farewell. "And we are the ones driving these changes together.”

But it’s still inexcusable to block the exits or seal any door or exit with anything other than an alarm that can be ignored in the event of a fire or other emergency. Even the FD said its illegal to block the doors. 3/4

Every home in Beijing (and for those that used to live in Beijing) should have a Liuba Draws book on their coffee table. Liuba really captures the essence of life in the Jing. (Book published Nov 2022)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs — which is the supervising government agency for foreign media — needs to investigate the treatment of @EP_Lawrence . Otherwise, his press credentials and the rules allowing foreign media to operate in China, are meaningless. This is a safety issue.

A friend who has lived in Beijing for 20 years took a flight 6/9/22 to Phuket for time at his condo. He got Covid with symptoms of bad cold. Went to clinic 6/16/22 ($50 fee), got meds, and was ordered to "bed rest at home" for week. Already feeling better. Contrast with China!

Schools in Chaoyang district, including int'l schools, are going online. Half day tomorrow to prepare for the transition (long haul?). Now parents need to scramble to have someone watch their younger kids at home. Not a great development. Notice from Western Academy of Beijing.

A bit hazy today but still a nice Sunday for a long walk, including a visit to the Beijing Ancient Observatory (北京古观象台) with its impressive instruments from the Jesuits dating from the mid-1600s.

@macastel3 The decline of foreign biz executives on the ground (and CEOs that previously travelled to China) is a deeper, long-term loss for Beijing. These executives have historically been strong advocates for China back home. Zero-Covid is doing more harm than just driving people away.

In the past, lawyers in China had more fun than those in today's legal profession. In Norwood Allman’s 1943 book "Shanghai Lawyer" the key qualification was horsemanship since “[m]ost of the American lawyers in China played polo”. Who'd rather ride a horse than study XJP thought?

Journalism is not a crime. When PRC police and security forces harass and detain foreign reporters (and local staff) all they do is create a whole new storyline — and most oftentimes its negative. If China has a good story to tell, let the journalists do their jobs. @fccchina

The old Jesuit library in Shanghai (上海图书馆徐家汇藏书楼) is a fabulous resource for anyone researching life in China/Shanghai in the early 20th century. In the course of researching The Peking Express story, the staff was most helpful. A national treasure.

Happy Easter from the Bibliotheca Zi-ka-wei, the old Jesuit Library (1847). Here’s a peek at the two-storey library, though we can’t bring you that glorious antiquarian book scent (why does no one bottle THAT?). How did it survive the Cultural Revolution? 1/

Just finished reading “Assignment China”, an extraordinary work @mikechinoy . A captivating narrative involving the media giants of China sharing their stories — personal, upfront, and insightful. An important historical record of journalism in action.

Pedestrians in Beijing have no rights — parking on the sidewalk is all too common. Welcome to my daily commute to the office. These guys only get in trouble if captured on camera parking illegally in the street. Meanwhile, there is plenty of underground parking — but for a fee.

Got results of 12th test: negative, of course. Also told that no one in this hotel has tested positive. But told a new rule today: Close my window to keep my “air” out of the hallways, especially when I open my door. Sorry, but no. It’s called making up the rules as we go!

Great Saturday for urban walk in Beijing. High 40sF. No wind. Sunny. Walked from home (Guanghua lu) to Panjiayuan (Dirt Market). Crowded but I didn’t see any foreigners. I am always intrigued by the old book section.

WeChat account suspension is a serious risk given the dependency on the platform. And the risk continues to increase on a daily basis as the gatekeepers add to the list of sensitive topics. What’s sensitive information? What's benign information? You will know it when you see it.

Maybe I missed it but I am waiting for "Balloons-R-Us (Beijing) Co., Ltd." to be publicly revealed. The PRC foreign ministry claims the owner is a private company yet no-one has come forward, and whether ownership traces back to the PLA, MSS, or the weatherman.

Out of quarantine. Took train SHA-Beijing. Hongqiao station normal. Shops open. Almost no dabai. Many unmasked people. Beijingnan normal, but when home received dreaded pop-ups. Ugh! No stores/office until after 7 days or after multiple tests. Endless testing. Home sweet home!
