mourns the loss of beloved alumna, Mildred Grier, one of our most precious jewels. Grier was one of the first women to matriculate at Johnson C. Smith University. She entered as a freshman in 1941.

MLK spoke glowingly of Charlotte's push for equal rights to 5,000 people at JCSUβs gymnasium on Sep. 21, 1966, our 100th anniversary. He often corresponded with local civil rights leaders Reginald Hawkins and Kelly Alexander, both of whom lived in the Historic West End.
