For
@rapplerdotcom
, I spoke to filmmaker Arvin Belarmino about his beginnings in IT, his pivot from neorealism to absurdism, and why 'bakte' became the subject of RADIKALS – his new short premiering at Cannes Critics Week 2024 (

Many of us will not be affected by the results of today's elections. Privilege will insulate us from the effects. The rich can easily leave the country. But the poor and the marginalized will be robbed of chances at a better life. They have no option but to stay and suffer.
One of the worst parts about having body dysmorphia is the self-loathing that comes with taking photos. You get so conscious about how you look that you end up refusing to document your life. You wind up erased from your own milestones.
So today, I had a career talk for a bunch of life sciences undergrads on why we need to do research.
I started by asking: "Name five Filipino scientist from the top of your head. Go.".
They were silent and after a while, I said:
"Exactly. I hope you understand the problem."
BREAKING: Malacañang is asking PH Congress to declare a nat'l emergency, grant special powers to Pres. Duterte to address the crisis spawned by

We have more people following COVID-19 protocols (wearing masks, etc.) here than in other countries.
We're failing because the government is focused on militarization and taking advantage of the pandemic for their political gain.
They're sacrificing us. They always have been.
Admittedly, I'm curious about this because what falls under "plagiarism" for dance? Sure the steps themselves are a staple esp in the context of the songs, but here there are also similarities with changes in formation. Where do you draw the line esp in the context of cheer?
Every journalist who asks these questions — ones that endangers their subjects, especially in this political situation — should not have a place in journalism.
I just wanna say that I know a lot of people like this and more often than not they're discouraged from learning the language because people shit on them for not knowing Filipino early on.
Only a specific batch, which was made in Thailand, was recalled. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland added that "the contaminated product does not pose an acute risk to health." Why does this thread not include these details? People are panicking over pancit canton!
JUST IN: The governments of Ireland, France and Malta have issued health safety warnings, telling their constituents not to consume popular Filipino instant noodles brand 'Lucky Me' ‘due to high level of ethylene oxide.’
I am asking that
@inquirerdotnet
take this article down because it is blatant misinformation and is outright irresponsible journalism.
Here's why (a science thread!!!):
An LRTA personnel equipped with a UV light disinfectant goes around an LRT coach at the Baclaran Station. LRTA says UV Light disinfection is done on each end of the LRT line before a coach is sent for its next run.
Can we stop using "the resilience of the Filipino community" as an excuse to allow for shitty governance and the persistence of these horrible social structures???
BREAKING: Erik Matti's sociopolitical thriller 'On the Job 2: The Missing 8' has been selected as the Philippines' submission for the Best International Feature category at the 95th Academy Awards. The film won John Arcilla the Volpi Cup in 2021.
"Ano itong list?"
"Trailblazers from around the world, mom. They picked me."
She squints at the screen.
"Bakit? LGBTQ ka ba, Jase?"
I paused. Maybe this unravels everything but maybe it puts everything into place. I'll only know after.
"Yeah, mom. I am."
I think it's pretty nice that both GOMBURZA and FIREFLY — two films that have been struggling to play in theaters — are the top two films at this year's
#MMFF2023
.
But that begs the question: Can't the festival intervene so their entries have proper cinema distribution?
2018 was such a weird year for film, but i feel like everyone’s favs from it tell a lot abt their taste. genuinely curious what’s everyone’s top 3 from 2018?
We vote not only for ourselves but for others. The status quo has disenfranchised many of our fellow Filipinos and pushed their stories and lives to the margins, only to be forgotten by the system meant to uphold their lives and liberties. We failed them. We failed each other.
In third year college, Calasanz asked me during a Philo oral exam: "Paano kung hindi ka tanggapin ng magulang mo kasi bakla ka?"
I told him:
"Kung ang tagal kong di natanggap ang sarili ko, bakit ko aasahang tatanggapin ako ng iba agad-agad?
Okay lang. Mahal ko pa rin sila."
At the height of my mental instability and endless self-loathing two years ago, I was curled up in the car next to my father.
I asked him: "How do you manage me, dad?"
He said: "I don't. I love you and hope that is enough."
I wept. He hugged me.
I am grateful for my parents.
FIREFLY (2023; dir. Zig Dulay): The spiritual successor of BLACK RAINBOW. Initially bogged down by its framing device but is saved by its sincerity and simplicity. Could've easily been an animated film. Alessandra De Rossi is one of our most underrated actresses.

I am aware that this is not the last battle that we will fight. But it still feels like an overwhelming loss, even if the counts aren't official.
I have no more words. Tonight, like the rest of you, I grieve.
The photo is a year old but the smile remains the same.
Wish

a lot of luck today!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
And catch him on SNL later!!!

"As a kid who grew up in the province, all around me people were aspiring to be doctors. But no one wanted to be a scientist.
If these narratives aren't available to Filipino kids at a young age, how can we ever hope for them to aspire to be researchers?"
Kara Moreno is one of the best cinematographers working today. From THIRD WORLD ROMANCE and CONGRATULATIONS, DX! to BECKY & BADETTE and KAMPON, it's been a series of knockouts from her. Indelible imagery that always emerges from and prioritizes the story. Stunning, top-tier work.
As an openly gay actor, I'm really tired of having to beg for my place in this industry.
We train in workshops to hone our craft and go to dozens of auditions, only to be rejected because of our SOGIE.
Then we see opportunities go to people like this?
Make it make sense.
I'm openly gay, but I haven't discussed this yet with my parents.
They are the only people I feel like I haven't come out to yet.
I honestly do not know when I'll be able to have this conversation, but it's something that I've been meaning to do for the longest time.

For

As a person who grew up in an informal settler's area and whose parents grew up in poverty, I really hate it when people use derogatory terms especially against the poor.
It might be small to you but it's reiterating an entire language of oppressiveness.

"There is so many unrecognized efforts in the country for scientific research.
What you'll realize is what's hindering science in the Philippines isn't just the lack of people/money. It's also because our laws are outdated - making it slower/more expensive to do science here."
It's a strange full-circle moment for the two of us:

“Of course I’ll hurt you. Of course you’ll hurt me. Of course we will hurt each other. But this is the very condition of existence. To become spring, means accepting the risk of winter. To become presence, means accepting the risk of absence.”

An Inconvenient Love (2022; Petersen Vargas): After watching this in a packed cinema amidst a sea of fans, I finally understand the power of a love team and the joy of sharing a romcom in a theater. Dare I say: DonBelle has never looked better?

"This dilemma continued til when I was college. In my undergraduate years, I was surrounded by people who were doctors. I couldn't connect to a lot of the people in my course because everyone kept talking about med schools and NMAT scores.
It was a very lonely experience."
