Excited to see my latest article out, “Data-owning democracy or digital socialism?”. It articulates a vision of democratic ownership and control over digital infrastructure and theorizes how this could be achieved.

🚨 New articles on AI labour
Finally, the last of what I see as a triptych of articles is out! They are all on AI data work and explore how colonial patterns of power influence the production of AI systems. All written with fabulous co-authors as part of OII's

and I examine the rise of digital workers who do not consider their labour as ‘real’ work. This degrades the value of their labour and facilitates companies offering low pay and poor conditions.
Springer Nature wants to translate one of my books into German using artificial intelligence and sell it full price even though it would be an "automatic translation" (basically Google translate). absolutely zero shame anymore in academic publishing.
Overton window of sensible UK politics now seems to range from low tax/low spend austerity politics on the left to anti-trans culture wars and low-key fascism on the right
Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy.

and I argue for the importance of a European tradition of experiments with digital democracy that we call 'decentralized participatory democracy' - focussed on how citizens can build collective power and make decisions.
When you read headlines like these I want you to remember:
- large data centres consume as much water and electricity as 50,000 ppl each day
- global data centre electricity demand will double by 2026
- we will need 10-20 times more data centres by 2035

My article today for
@jacobin
on web3 and platform socialism.
"Web3 is unlikely to meaningfully redistribute value because it doesn’t challenge the fundamental drive to commodification that now dominates the web"
Third, 'Artificial Intelligence in the Colonial Matrix of Power' sketches the broader theoretical framework of how the entire value chain of AI is structured by a logic of coloniality, operating through its inputs, algorithms and biased outputs.
I have been waging a relentless campaign against Google to prove I am not 85 years old. No amount of passports, drivers' licence and me holding my ID with a copy of the day's paper has so far satisfied them. Trying to harness the spirit of the blitz. I will prevail.

She turned to me and gleefully said ‘you can loot their bodies and if there are no witnesses you just get away with it’.

Helping my wife prepare for a job interview last night and was struck by how easily she could do my job and how not in a million years could I ever do hers. Of course, now I know this, she can never be allowed to discover the truth.
Who is working on tech companies and climate change? What articles/books do you recommend? I thought there would be tons of literature but finding it hard to get a sense of what is out there.

today. Time is not right for Labour supporting an xmas election. We need to sort out Brexit so that the election can be fought over Labour's strengths: anti-austerity and rebuilding our communities.
BMG poll puts Labour only 6 points behind. We're on the up and are going to absolutely kill it in the final two weeks!
Tory lead a tiny 6 points.
Conservatives 39% (-2)
Labour 33% (+5)
Lib Dems 13% (-5)
Brexit 4% (+1)
Green 5% (-)

We do have the rule of law though. The problem is with the private ownership of digital media, which needs to be replaced by a socially owned alternative.
Friends, Musk/Twitter headlines are all variants of ‘what will Elon do?’ It’s a signal of how lost we are. We obsess over one man and his whims because we don’t yet have the democratic rule of law needed to govern our information spaces. Without law power is dangerous.🧵[1/8]
