Finally got around to finalizing the Spanish version of my turf disease ebook. You can now purchase "Una Introducción a las Enfermedades de las Cespitosas" for yourself or your crew. Big thanks to my former students for helping with the translation!
More good news today. Met with my oncologist and the recommendation moving forward will be aggressive monitoring only. Since I caught it early and surgery was able to remove all of the cancer they aren’t recommending any follow up treatments. Crazy how fast this all happened.
I’m sure more info will be coming out from MSU, but I just heard that Dr. Vargas passed today. Sad day for the world of turfgrass and plant pathology.

I don’t have time to deal with people who think today’s actions were justifiable or who deny that Trump didn’t have a direct role in what happened. Feel free to block me if you’re one of those people. Or drop one of these (🙋🏻♂️) so I can block you. (For the record I’m Republican)

Me: Pete, it’s 2:30. Where are you going?
Pete: It’s quitting time for full professors.
I now get it. Damn Dernoeden is still training me 14 years later.

Got the new students a swag box to welcome them to campus. Key items include magnifying loop (grass ID), thumb drive (assignments), winter hat (❄️), stress ball (🤯), and a few other items. Coffee tumbler and multi-purpose pocket knife also on their way.

Cancer update: T1A seminoma. Caught early. Need to schedule appointment with oncologist and radial oncologist in next three weeks. Options include routine scanning and waiting, radiation or chemo. In laymen’s terms this is just about the “best case scenario.”

Today I had 6 students graduate. They earned over $53k in scholarships while at

Would this be a good week leading into the

Big congrats to

How’s the saying go? “Another day, another dollar.” Plenty of dollars flowing from my budget this year with 18 internship visits. Hoping to save a ton by visiting 9 in one week though. Here’s the start of the thread for the 2023

How many volunteer jobs are glamorous. Most people fill divots or rake bunkers. It’s about the experience. Don’t volunteer if you don’t want to be part of the experience. Certainly don’t bitch on Twitter about it.

Books arrived and I spent 2 hrs in USPS post office packaging them for tomorrow’s shipping. Maybe they’ll even make it out tonight. Some might be delayed a day or two but will come with Dr. Turgeon’s signature.

And just when you thought you were getting an advantage...there goes turf quality. Carts are among the top detriments to course conditions. Doubling them is disastrous to turf. I’m fine with it if it protects lives but just know what you’re getting into.
Today is always the most exhausting day of the year. Lots of highs in seeing students finish but also lots of lows in being disconnected from them for now. Looking forward to the graduates reaching back out in a few years when looking for the next career move and also to visiting
I set out this week to visit all of my

Just boarded flight to LAX from Philly. First on upgrade list but didn’t make cut. Took my seat to prepare for the trip. Got settled in and BOOM they moved me to first. Sometimes shutting your mouth and rolling with things works out. I should learn to do that more often.
Just learned that

Dr. Watschke was not only one of three prominent mentors in my life but he was also a great friend. This is like a gut punch similar to when Zontek passed.
Saying it was 2 different golf courses out there between morning and afternoon. What about if a big storm came through and softened it up or if players had to play through that? That would be 2 dif courses too. Also listening to Chamblee makes me ill

Green is being renovated currently. Originally constructed on native soils in 1919, it’s finally getting its USGA makeover. Awesome to see what 100+ years of rootzone looks like. Lots of variety in top dressing habits over the decades.

Zoom bombing? Any superintendents out there want to “zoom bomb” my class this semester? In the online environment I’m hoping to have superintendents drop in for a few minutes to offer words of encouragement while students learn in a, predominantly, online environment.

It is with great sadness to report the loss of one of our turf faculty. Dr. Uddin was much greater than just a turf professor at Penn State. Do a search on twitter for “Wakar Uddin” and see all he did outside of the university.

Saddened to hear of the passing of Rohingya activist and my friend Dr. Wakar Uddin. My recent visit with Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar made clear the continuing importance of his work. Dr. Uddin was a powerful force for the Rohingya community and will be missed.
