Vermont trailed Yale with 3.8 seconds left.
- Full-length layup in 3.2
- Offensive foul drawn
- Banked in 3 at the buzzer PLUS THE FOUL
- Made free throw with 0.3 left to win it in regulation.
Unreal finish in Patrick Gymnasium.
FAU ranked higher in NET *and* KenPom before the NCAA Tournament than…
Miami
Virginia
Kentucky
TCU
Indiana
Michigan State
Northwestern
Missouri
This isn’t your typical Cinderella run. FAU isn’t shocking the world. They were underseeded and doing what they believed they could.
🎟️ NC State. Five wins in five days. Unreal.
Tuesday: 94-85 over Louisville
Wednesday: 83-65 over Syracuse
Thursday: 74-69 over Duke
Friday: 73-65 in OT over Virginia
Saturday: 84-76 over North Carolina
This shot last night will go down as even more special than it already was:
Teams with three Q1A wins and no Q3 or Q4 losses to miss the NCAA Tournament in the NET era:
...zero.
Butler and Kansas State both fit the criteria as teams on the outside of most projected 2024 brackets.
#Butler
’s Thad Matta has completed his transfer class. He added two shot-blocking bigs in Manny Bates and Jalen Thomas, a versatile big wing in Ali Ali, and a rock-solid two-way guard in Eric Hunter.
He also retained all returning players. Hard to find much fault in that.
Random fact of the day. Two players in all of college basketball met the following criteria last season:
- Freshman
- >25% of minutes played
- 2.0 or better A:TO ratio
- .565 or better TS%
Those two players? Braden Smith and Braeden Smith.
I have one overarching takeaway: The Big East and the Mountain West should be furious. Absolutely furious.
The Big East being the second-highest rated conference by most metrics and only getting three bids is extremely disrespectful. MWC was underseeded across the board.
In other news....
#Butler
now holds the longest active non-conference home winning streak in the country with Duke falling to Stephen F. Austin....

BREAKING:
#Butler
is expected to hire Alex Barlow as an assistant coach, per source.
The former Butler point guard has worked in the Boston Celtics organization since 2015. He was the head coach of their G League affiliate this past season.
Projected No. 1 seeds entering the day:
Purdue: Lost to Wisconsin in OT
Houston: Lost to Iowa State by 28
UConn: Beat Marquette by 16
North Carolina: Lost to NC State by 8
UConn was the only winner — and it faced arguably the toughest opponent.
Micah Potter (6-10) and Nate Reuvers (6-11) were the only two Wisconsin players that did not record a single rebound today. They played a combined 40 minutes without collecting a single board on either end.
The annual Stat Pack is back! For

first-round matchup.
For example, Saint Mary's is 15-0 when forcing 10+ TOs. Grand Canyon committed 10+ in 24 of 33 regular-season games.
WORDS for HC+:
"Heck of a college basketball game. Hats off to Butler. They did to us what nobody has been able to do all season long."
"Anybody that can come in here and score 99 points against us on our home floor played pretty darn well."
-Creighton's Greg McDermott
Michigan State transfer Pierre Brooks has committed to
#Butler
, per his Instagram.
He played limited minutes for the Spartans over the past two years but is a former four-star recruit.
WORDS ($):
#Butler
has officially secured the commitment of NC State transfer big man Manny Bates, per
@JonRothstein
. He is an elite rim-protector who brings athleticism and size to the frontcourt.
Coach Matta’s transfer class now features Bates, Jalen Thomas, and Ali Ali.
UC Irvine transfer DJ Davis has committed to
#Butler
, per his IG. The Bulldogs add one of the premier shooters in the portal.
Davis hit 88 3s at a 40% clip last year while making First Team All-Big West. Butler lands its sharpshooter.
WORDS ($):
#Butler
’s 2020 class will be the most highly-rated in program history and all five recruits have now signed their NLI.
The future looks bright under head coach LaVall Jordan with all of the pieces coming together.

Coming soon to the Hinkle Fieldhouse near you...
I have heard from close to the situation that Thad Matta’s health is good.
He’s coming to Butler to win games and for the long haul. I wouldn’t put much weight in the talk of coach-in-waiting or wanting to be AD one day. Butler hired its basketball coach today.
Let’s roll.
How about Butler's underclassmen tonight?
-Bizjack scored 11 on 3-for-3 from 3.
-Moore scored eight and dished two asts
-Kapke hit two 3s and stepped up for two huge FTs in the closing seconds
-Cassia played a career-high eight minutes.
That's two freshmen and a sophomore.
I’m home now, so I can follow
@PoshAlexander
’s instructions to the media:
“PUT THIS IN ALL CAPS: THIS IS A BIG SHOUTOUT TO THE CROWD WE HAD. AMAZING FANS TONIGHT. WE REALLY REALLY AND TRULY APPRECIATE THAT.
PUT THAT IN ALL CAPS FOR ME.”
Big East in KenPom’s preseason rankings:
8. Villanova
17. Marquette
18. Xavier
20. Seton Hall
31. Providence
33. Butler
36. Creighton
56. Georgetown
77. DePaul
95. St. John’s
Projected to be the nation’s second-best conference.
#Butler
has landed Purdue transfer guard Eric Hunter Jr., per his Instagram. The local product has one year of eligibility remaining and is a proven contributor at the high-major level. Excellent defender as a 6-4 combo guard.
Akron transfer Ali Ali has officially committed to Thad Matta and
#Butler
, as announced on Instagram. Big-time addition to the Dawgs as a versatile 6-8 forward.
"Providence is under-.500 w/o Bryce Hopkins."
But is that fair? Shouldn't the time required to adjust to losing a star be accounted for?
PC lost its first four games without a healthy Hopkins but then finished 10-7 with wins over Seton Hall, St. John's, and Creighton — TWICE.
#Butler
’s Henry Baddley has absolutely epitomized the “next man up” philosophy tonight. The senior has played huge minutes and keeps making big-time plays on both ends.
#GoDawgs
#Butler
has landed NC State transfer Manny Bates. The 6-11 big man missed this past season due to injury but is one of the nation’s best shot-blockers. He likely immediately slots into Butler’s starting lineup.
Massive land for Coach Matta.
WORDS:
#Butler
’s biggest offseason needs were…
1. Retain the roster ✅
2. Add a big wing shooter/scorer ✅
3. Bolster the frontcourt ✅
Coach Matta and Co. brought back everyone (including Lukosius and Turnbull), and added big-time transfers with Ali, Thomas, and Bates. Huge Ws.
Big 12 in the first round:
No. 1 seed Baylor by 36
No. 1 seed Kansas by 27
No. 3 seed Texas Tech by 35
N. 6 seed Texas by 8
No. 9 seed TCU by 27
No. 11 seed Iowa State by 5
6-0.
Best conference in college basketball from opening night through today.
North Carolina transfer Puff Johnson will arrive for a visit to
#Butler
tonight. 6-8 forward with two years of eligibility remaining.
A former four-star recruit, Johnson averaged 4.1 points and 2.7 rebounds this past season. He scored 11 points in the 2022 national title game.
FINAL: Butler 99, Creighton 98
Unreal game. Unreal finish. Butler wins its first game at Creighton since 2015.
Huge Quad 1 road win to pair with already having beaten Marquette on the road, and Butler did this one without Posh Alexander. Wow.
Some have already posted about it (and thank you to those that have said kind words), but I did in fact get married this weekend!
Could not have asked for the day to go any smoother and can't wait to start this next chapter.
Andrew Nembhard shows the value of having an elite point guard in a year where there is less star power at the position than normal. He’s one of the best, and he perhaps separates Gonzaga from others. Awesome performance against Memphis.
No Selection Sunday. No Opening Weekend. No Final Four. No One Shining Moment.
But yet…memories that will never be forgotten.
In remembrance of the season that was never finished, here are 68 defining moments of the 2019-20 campaign.
WORDS:
Here is look at what the implied bid share of the seven major conferences was based on KenPom's conference strength rating, compared to actual bids.
The Big East received three bids FEWER than the implied share from KenPom.
Central Arkansas transfer Camren Hunter has committed to
#Butler
, per his Instagram. The 6-3 guard averaged 16.9 points and 3.9 assists per game while being named Third Team All-ASUN last season.
He has two years of eligibility remaining.
WORDS ($):
St. John’s transfer Posh Alexander is set to begin a visit to
#Butler
on Monday. The 6-0 guard is one of the premier defenders in the country.
Alexander averaged 11.7 points and 4.7 assists over three years with St. John’s, starting 77 of 84 games played.
#Butler
has landed 6-foot-3 graduate transfer guard Jair Bolden. He averaged 8.5 points per game last season with South Carolina while shooting 41.2% from 3-point range (on 114 attempts). Bolden's floor spacing will really help right away next season.
#GoDawgs
Butler had chances down the stretch against UConn, but this was *the* sequence of the game.
From up seven to tied in just 50 seconds. Hard to overcome those mistakes and beat a top 5 team in the country.
Opening-game KenPom adjustments...
Power 6 teams with the largest KP jumps:
-NC State
-Butler
-Wisconsin
-Washington State
-Duke
-Penn State
-Maryland
Power 6 teams with the largest KP falls:
-TCU
-USC
-Florida State
-South Carolina
-Oklahoma
-California
-Providence
#Butler
guard/forward Simas Lukosius is reportedly out of the transfer portal. The 6-6 Lithuanian averaged 6.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per game as a freshman while showing serious flashes.
BREAKING:
#Butler
will be returning all four seniors for the 2021-22 season: Aaron Thompson, Bryce Nze, Christian David, and Jair Bolden will all play another year in Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Thank you to everyone that read my content throughout this season, from Butler coverage to Top 25s to Bracketology updates.
This year was a blast to cover even if it ended early. I appreciate all the interactions and will be bringing plenty of offseason articles as well.
If it’s “so easy” to dominate a non-Power 6 conference every year and get an inflated seed, why is it that Gonzaga is the only one that does it?...
People act like 50 programs could dominate the WCC the way that Mark Few and Co. have. The Gonzaga program is special. Elite.
Butler transfer Myles Wilmoth is headed to Hofstra, per his Instagram. Dealt with an injury early this past season, but showed promise over the offseason. Should be a good stretch-4 for Hofstra.
Seeds that have won today: 1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 15.
If Villanova and Morehead State win...every single seed except for a No. 16 will win on the opening day of the Round of 64. Wow.
#Butler
's only two departures (transfer or decommitment) after its coaching change were Simas Lukosius and Connor Turnbull.
Head coach Thad Matta has now recruited BOTH back to the program. Retaining AC David Ragland has certainly helped as well.
I talked about the "Isaiah Joe Factor" in my Bubble Watch earlier today. Arkansas is now 17-5 with him in the lineup after a win over Tennessee tonight in which he had 22 pts (Mason Jones had 37😳). Razorbacks are 1-5 w/o him.
Arkansas' resume looks better under this microscope.
6-foot-8 freshman forward Julian Champagnie is developing into an absolute star for St. John's.
He has averaged 17.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, and 1.3 steals per game over SJU's last six contests.
He should only keep improving.
#sjubb
Right decision or not -- that's up to the individual to decide -- Butler handled this decision extremely poorly.
The timing hurts the old staff to find new jobs, sets back the next coach without weeks of work, and furthers the idea of being a "cheap" program.
#Butler
’s roster is now full for next season. Five new faces join the mix around a returning core.
My projected starters:
Eric Hunter Jr.
Chuck Harris
Jayden Taylor
Ali Ali
Manny Bates
Simas Lukosius and Myles Tate to run the O off the bench. Jalen Thomas as the backup big.
I hope Butler fixes the Hinkle roof better than it did Jordan Hall.
I know many of you won’t get this, but the attempted fix of the leak in Jordan is legendary on campus.
If Utah State has a million at-large supporters, I am one of them.
If Utah State has ten at-large supporters, I am one of them.
If the world is against Utah State’s at-large candidacy, I am against the world.
Teams that I am high on (compared to national perception) for 2019-20: Florida, Gonzaga, Purdue, Dayton, Villanova, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Oregon, Marquette, Virginia, Alabama, Creighton, Colorado, Ole Miss, Houston, Rhode Island, New Mexico State, Wichita State, and Iowa State.
Presumably
#Butler
's next goal? Re-land 2022 prospect Connor Turnbull.
The big man reopened his recruitment earlier in the month but is still considering the Dawgs. His primary recruiter, David Ragland, was retained earlier this week.
Turnbull will visit Butler tomorrow.
2024 five-star prospect Flory Bidunga is expected to be in Hinkle Fieldhouse for
#Butler
vs. Creighton tonight.
Preferred walk-on commit Ethan McComb is also expected to be in the building.
Soooo
#Butler
has a need a center. But also, to play the names game, the Dawgs need to get involved. Starting Ali Ali and Akok Akok alongside each other would be hilarious.
FINAL: Butler 69, Marquette 62
Butler snaps Marquette's streak of 20 consecutive Big East home wins while also picking up its first Big East road win over a non-DePaul/Georgetown opponent since 2020.
To say this is a massive result for the Bulldogs would be an understatement.
#Butler
leads the country in Quadrant 1 (4) + Quadrant 2 (3) wins so far this season with seven total. Kansas is the only other team with four Q1 wins. Head coach LaVall Jordan's team has built one of the nation's best early-season resumes.
#GoDawgs
Today's biggest winner on the bubble: VCU.
-Wake Forest lost a Q3 game
-Xavier lost a Q3 game
-Vanderbilt blew out Georgia by 35
Vandy entered the day at 79th in the NET. Their high-efficiency win might cause a jump into the top 75, which would move VCU's road win into Quad-1.
Saturday/Sunday games just did not seem to matter whatsoever for selecting/seeding this year. They've always been just another part of the body of work, but it feels like they weren't considered at all this year.
I have a lot of feelings on this, none of them positive.
Butler's Pierre Brooks was one of the biggest steals of the transfer portal last offseason: 16.8 ppg on 44.1% from 3. Has scored 10+ in every game.
Last night, he went on a personal 13-0 run to put Butler up double-digits at Georgetown. The Bulldogs never looked back from there.
I have one overarching takeaway: The Big East and the Mountain West should be furious. Absolutely furious.
The Big East being the second-highest rated conference by most metrics and only getting three bids is extremely disrespectful. MWC was underseeded across the board.
Alabama has made a strong push recently into the NCAA Tournament conversation. Nate Oats has his team playing at a high level and the Crimson Tide are way better now than they were a month or two ago.
Bama defends its home court against K-State behind 26 points from Kira Lewis.
Coach Jordan is going to be really good at this. He was always great to talk to about nationwide college hoops when he was at Butler. Should rock this role.
Head coach Mike Young has flown under-the-radar as an elite leader for the past few seasons. Now in first year at the helm of Virginia Tech, he has put the team into the NCAA Tournament conversation despite losing a ton of talent. Hokies take down NC State.
#Butler
was up for a foreign trip and it could not come at a much better time. New coach Thad Matta will be taking his roster to Italy and Greece this summer. Some critical practices and exhibition games for the new staff.
