I highly recommend other designers to read Addiction by Design - one conclusion for me was the biggest change in All games over the past decade - solo or gacha hell - is their repackaging of the gambling industry's addiction design as "good game design".

Playing more Brightis (1999, Quintet/Shade, PS1) really feels like proto-Dark Souls at times! This area's cliffs remind me of Valley of Drakes / Darkroot Basin. Brightis has a mostly continuous world, different-sized weapons, a barren world with sad dude NPC lighthouse keepers..

As a barely sustainable studio (<$80k/year for 2), the '20s have been marked by divestment towards artistic games. Hard to find support for games that haven't derisked via existing fans, addictive loop, pop art style, which is why so many indie games stay within genre bounds
