a few weeks ago, I was endlessly scrolling on TikTok, when I came across a video of Nisreen Shehade, a young woman in Rafah, baking fresh bread in a tent. it made me sit up in bed. I reached out and we started talking. today, we spoke with her for NPR.

Called a Lyft to the Capitol to cover the weekly Muslim Congressional Friday services for NPR. My driver happened to be a Muslim uncle. We spoke about the NZ shooting, and afterwards he came to the prayer with me. Subhanallah. This unity is what makes me have faith.

I went into journalism naively thinking I’d join a field that genuinely spoke truth to power and held the responsible parties accountable. to learn that leading news orgs are just cogs in a machine that works to uphold systemic injustices is…disappointing to say the least.

I, for one, would love a seminar or class on navigating contracts as an adult. I literally have no idea what I’m supposed to look for in job contracts, what are red flags, what benefits are a given, etc. Someone school me, please. I’d love it if it were geared towards journalism.

Looking for book recs! Preferably by Muslim or South Asian/Middle Eastern writers. Some of my faves in this genre are ‘A Woman is No Man’ by Etaf Rum, ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ by Khaled Hosseini, and ‘An Ember in the Ashes’ by Sabaa Tahir.

One truly remarkable highlight of my week: today, while waiting in line to pay for my lunch, the guy in front of me struck up a convo. His smile & good mood was infectious. He generously decided to pay for my lunch. I introduced myself & asked his name. It was @NPR CEO Jarl Mohn.

Commissioner Michael O’Donnell just compared mandating people to wear masks to countries in the Middle East “that force women to wear things they might not want to wear.” None of the other commissioners responded to this comment.

I’m really excited for my first ever therapy appt tomorrow :))) I’ve scheduled many appts in the past & always cancelled them, due in part to stigma and due in part to me thinking I didn’t need it anymore bc I briefly felt better. I’m proud of myself for sticking to this one. 💘

my TL yesterday was a surreal mix of Super Bowl reactions and horrifying images coming out of Rafah. it was sobering, to say the least, to be reminded of (as if it ever leaves my mind) what is happening across the world, as we watch a football game, of all things.

I have found that over the past 6 years, *86%* of the journalism scholarship recipients from this org have attended “intensely selective universities” (defined as “the top 13% most selective four-year colleges nationally”, Voices) including the likes of Columbia & UC Berkeley. 🙃
