If you have a robust skincare routine you have demonstrated aptitude in many core skills of data science. I will not be taking criticism of this idea. Girls who have developed personalized skincare routines know more about multivariate causal inference than many engineers.

So rest up, friends. You have earned rest because you are a living creature who exists on this planet. If you want to devote yourself to high achievement, you are justified in rest by understanding the complexity of how achievement functions.

Creativity research reliably documents the importance of deep rest, and that the people privileged to be able to live highly creative lives often have these deep rest cycles built in. Has been missed in research often but profoundly predictive of work outcomes when included.

Rest is required for learning (& forgetting is required for learning!). Learning isn't just mashing more content into a bucket-brain forever. Lots of effects (from deliberate practice to spacing) show cram/work 'til you drop methods are inefficient, destructive in the longterm.

I don't believe we need to justify rest--but it is *clearly* tied to performance. High performers worked far fewer hours than we think. When you look into famous intellectual figures that people tweet hustle porn about, they did not work the 80+ hour weeks we have normalized.

Achievement by supposed lone figures rides on the labor of all. Many of us come from families that have had to work every moment & had that work only expand the privilegeds' time. I think...I think that sometimes resting is reclaiming, healing intergenerational exploitation.

There's no place on a resume for "really good at noticing when people are starting to give up on a task because they think they're stupid, and rallying them by yelling NO THIS TASK IS STUPID and WE'RE GONNA BEAT IT" but I wish there were I think it's one of my Top Skills

Kind of wild when HR in tech is like, "Yes, the canary is dead! But all the other canaries in the other chambers are also dead, so we're meeting our industry expectations 😇"

I realized today that I write all my code in the kitchen (the island is the right height to stand at), which makes every single time a guy in this industry has told me to "go back to the kitchen" objectively hilarious

Dragged my sad long covid self outside. This time of year I'm usually hiking ten mile hikes. Too scared to hike right now because I don't know what's happening to my heart so I just sat a bit. Still very nice. The world belongs to us all in all our abilities.

The best networking advice I have beyond the usual is that when you meet someone with a job that's different from yours it's really fun to ask them to tell you something that would surprise most people who don't work in their field, or that most people get wrong.

Hm I'm just a learning scientist what do I know but it seems to me if your goal is to get people to feel welcome in learning stats you shouldn't be dunking on screenshots of earnest questions trying to figure out a more accurate decision?

Surgical masks do not protect you from wildfire smoke, n95s do. But we decided to not care about teaching people about masks. Indoor air is not filtered well in many NYC buildings. But we decided not to care about indoor air. We're going to watch a lot of crises create crises.

Another man yelled at me for putting on a mask to pass him on a trail early this morning and mockingly repeated me in a high pitched yowl when I said 27 people died in the veterans home my grandmother was in. I'm just, so tired and tired of being shaken up and tired of their rage

@LetMood *fancy PI voice* "what if.....a LITTLE bit of trauma....intricately excavated out of the entirety of societal experience with such a privileged lens that it is in fact, not trauma at all.....could be good for you?"

A year ago we beat everybody to Zion in the very early morning and I'm really glad we did! This is one of those photos you look at and you're like wait did I really take that

I know tech loves to go “let’s fix minorities’ self-esteem!!” but that’s prob not the biggest issue, e.g. mid-level tech women are accurate about skills, but expect hiring situations to be much harsher than men do (and are they wrong?!). Check out reports-

I think sometimes there is a fascinating paradoxical effect: companies trying hard to get more inclusive, and put encouraging language in their ads, will ALSO double-down on language about “genius” and “rockstar” because they want to reassure that they’re not “lowering the bar”
