I report what I see. If it's good, it's good; if it's bad, it's bad. Does not depend on me. Make them release more awesome stuff. Don't shoot the messenger.
Tesla did a great job on the video browser for the sentry/dashcam clips. Really like the UI. You get to see all 4 recorded cams in real time and select which one is maximized.
I am sure you are all eager to know more about HW4, so I am going to show you the refreshed car computer from a Model X. Just don't tell anybody you saw it, because it's really a secret still.
This unit made appearance at the EPC about a month ago, but the picture was hidden.
Looks like 2022.44.11 includes the new vision autopark for USS-less cars:
Tesla Vision Park Assist provides visual and audio alerts of surrounding objects. This feature uses the occupancy network to predict high-definition outlines of objects 360 degrees around the car.
Some Semi porn for those that need it on this New Years eve.
The modular battery is rated at 1000V
DUs are cooled with "mega cooling" modules.
Axles are called: Torque and Efficiency.
(Happy New Year everybody!)
wow 2022.20.7 seems to go into insane details to improve range predictions.
Even tire pressure is taken into account (amongst many-many other extra variables just added). Also takes into account energy loss to phone charging and 12V accessories, air density, battery heat/cool,...
Interesting that "phone use" for Tesla means "driver is holding a phone in front of them" not "driver is talking on a phone that's pressed to their ear".
Great job,
@Tesla
, the reworked trip planner (in since late 2021.4.xx) is really spot-on for predicting arrival SoC for me while still sitting at a charger, more accurate than ABRP even!
At first I thought it was just luck, but it really is consistently almost perfect.
In case you were wondering what does the selfie camera in model 3 currently try to detect:
BLINDED
DARK
EYES_CLOSED
EYES_DOWN
EYES_NOMINAL
EYES_UP
HEAD_DOWN
HEAD_TRUNC
LOOKING_LEFT
LOOKING_RIGHT
PHONE_USE
SUNGLASSES_EYES_LIKELY_NOMINAL
SUNGLASSES_LIKELY_EYES_DOWN
Got a pretty worrying

in the mail.
This is on AP (NoA, really), 75 mph into a truck, no braking, no warnings of any kind.
The firmware is 2021.4.18.2, accident in June 2021.
radar-equipped car (but hw2.5 of course)
HW4 made an official appearance in the production code with FSDBeta 10.11
While rumors were it would be very similar to hw3 just more/faster RAM, in fact the differences appear to more than that.
Exact details remain somewhat nebulous, but official launch is likely pretty soon.
So I decided to look into how Tesla does alternate routes (I know, late) fully expecting to see they just get a few alternatives from Google and that's it and... nope, there's nothing like it!
Some seriously cool and very practical information Esp. for the tinkering types.
@Tesla
now gives access to repair manuals, service information, vehicle diagnostic (remote in EU) and such.
For free!
I was told it's not a bug.
Seriously step in the right direction!
It looks like Tesla is planning (already doing?) display of (recognized) Tesla cars on autopilot cars visualization as such. Keep your eye on it?
Also no models yet but coming later:
Ambulance, Fire truck, Police car and "construction"
Looks like Tesla is planning a big boost to (camera based) driver monitoring.
They are now tracking additional things like how many yawns the driver had recently, how many blinks and how long they were, leaning. All this is to calculate how drowsy the driver is.
The mystery of the model3 in-cabin "selfie" cam is slowly clearing.
huge thanks to
@davidhooperr
for performing a bunch of research and providing the car.
The images are not perfect but at least we get the idea of the coverage now.
Well, tested the new "Tesla autopark" that Tesla only deploys to refresh model S for whatever reason now.
It is camera based (unlike previous ultrasonic-only implementation) so it can use just drawn parking lines and also centers in them rather good unlike the USS version
2023.27.12 (the new beta 11.4.8.1) brings us speed cam awareness (both fixed and mobile) and red light cam and a combination (light+speed), via Teslamaps.
A number of navigation features are in the wings including "avoid constrution on route" and uturn control.
Looks like model 3/Y is getting a second display soon?
I just took a closer look at an AMD based model 3/y car thanks to some enterprising people
And there are two unpopulated connectors near display, one of them is marked "2nd display".
EPC has it populated - looks like s/x
Hm, not sure why, but lately (a week or so?) sound system in my car suddenly sounds much better than before, much more voluminous and I am pretty sure it's not my imagination. At first I thought it was 2021.36 only, but seems to extend to at least 2021.32.2x?
Feels great!
Look like no more pretending you are a passenger to play games while driving. The car will now ask you "Adjust the passenger seat controls to verify you are a passenger."
Suddenly that passenger lumbar control becomes super used I guess?
New hardware incoming.
Integrated inductive phone charger (Qi) for S/X cars.
Two new S/X battery types in several configs (not yet sure of the capacity - TBD)
new lumbar (so new seats?)
New charge port type.
New suspension version.
I would speculate all these are imminent 1/
Tesla Service is very consistent in my experience.
Every time I pick up the car from service, I can be sure something is scratched, dirty, improperly put together and so on.
Now they also changed the pick up process so you don't interact with people, and can't bring these new
Hm, it looks like that "if you can see under a semi, you can drive there" problem is fixed now? At least the car behaved really sensible today when I encountered a suitable scenario.
Other (than the release notes) stuff from 2024.14.3
- Amazon music playback support
- beginning of what looks like "tesla voice assistant" that would be activated by a wakeword-? (Aka car always listening for it), narrated by "Jenny Neutral" voice by Microsoft.
A bit of a model3 refresh (highland) teardown.
I guess the biggest change (reported elsewhere) is that all comms were ripped off the board.
Wifi, cell modem, ... on external TCM module in the headliner somewhere connected via gigabit ethernet to the infotainment (brown connector)
Looks like that 2024.24.1 release is lit (not a typo).
active noise cancellation (on refresh s/x).
improved lane guidance/ nav including voice prompts for "speed/radar locations, trafic light cameras and bus lane detection".
also alt route selection (yay!)
needs new maps
Wow, totally did not expect I'll see anything like this.
Waze was stubbornly routing me into closed I-75 South between Lexington and Richmond just now while Tesla nav correctly insisted to take a detour (and I ignored it, sigh)
If Tesla was a REAL software company, after you press that "YES" dialog button about "This is beta, blah blah, I understand what I am doing and will keep both pieces if it breaks" setting windows become accessible
Your periodic

reminder to pay attention on autopilot (and not).
This particular one also shows dangers of having increased follow distance setting "luring" people into the gap.
On autopilot (but not at fault)
Tesla did not receive this report it seems.
Hey
@elonmusk
you might want to have your team look into the moon tricking the autopilot system. The car thinks the moon is a yellow traffic light and wanted to keep slowing down. 🤦🏼
@Teslarati
@teslaownersSV
@TeslaJoy
Ok, autopilot assist app activated!
the much coveted augmented reality view!
(perfect "stop line" detection I must say, only 31% probability of indoors though which is a bit of a bummer.)
Interestign that A/B nodes vision fps is different (both far from 36fps nominal though!)
HW4 Model Y are nothing new, but I have not seen any inside picture yet.
So here comes.
Thank you for your sacrifice, anonymous donor.
The computer formfactor is similar to s/x cars (so no retrofit to hw3 cars)
Peeked a bit into 2023.38, lots of stuff seems to be in motion.
Congestion fees added (if you charge above 80% on a congested supercharger)
"object on road" pushed by map service (waze-like, but detected by (other tesla) car visions?)
option to autodial 911 on airbag deploy
2023.44.30.8 brings us this knowledge about upcoming hardware:
Mexico-UNECE homologated Model Y
Model Y will get Stealth Grey color
Models Y, S and X efficiency package 2024
Model S and X also get a new steering wheel and yokes with "mechanical horn"
So despite 11.4.2 release notes not changing from .1, the differences underneath are substantial
There's now autowiper v4 with ability to disable "deep rain" (I guess that did not pan out all that well)
There's AEB for cut-in traffic (server side toggle)
And a bunch of more stuff
Hey
@tesla
you might want to get somebody check that bsdiff rig that generates patches, it seems to have broken so all people on 2021.12.25.x now receive full firmare at 1.9G instead of a 130M patch. Imagine that EoM bill.
hint, bsdiff requires 17x RAM size from source file
Remember that widely publicized (not!) case where a detached truck tire hits oncoming Tesla, landing right in the windshield and not piercing through it ?
Yeah, me neither.
Kinda scary how sudden it all can be
#TeslaCrashFootage
had to drive in a bit of rain today
Tesla autowipers had no idea at all🙃
surprisingly it was dry-wiping 30 minutes prior before the rain started (no video though as I did not think at teh time it'd be relevant)
Impressions after nearly 600 miles on 11.4.3 with Elon mode (could not get a non-Tesla car to try in time).
It went much better than the prior experiment obviously.
Many contributing factors. I was not as late so I did not mind as much (still ended up 5 minutes late solely
Got my hands on a plaid model S car computer.
Kinda weird to see that it only has 8G of onboard ECC RAM and 128G NVMe (made in June 2021)
For comparison Model Ys (AMD-based, made this year) have 16G of non-ECC RAM and 256G NVMe.
2023.44.1 brings us:
- front camera is getting a washer too and here's the button to activate it
- new js player for media: shaka player
- media playback added 1.25x 1.5x and 2x speeds (for apple podcasts?)
Got a model Y hw4 computer for some exploration.
Interesting that actually the back side has an adapter that makes it compatible with old style holes in the "firewall" (old style adapter from hw3 for comparison on the left).
Now that HW4 is widely available I got some firmware samples and discovered that:
The shipping version is internally called 2-SOC and has two possible camera layouts. The current one or the expanded one with added surround view cams (front bumper and two more)
To start with sorta bad news, The form-factor is totally different, so definitely no retrofits on this one.
top/left is new unit, bottom - current plaid unit)
A ranger was changing my 12v battery today and I noticed the HEPA filter was not looking great.
Would not it be amazing if Tesla app instead of nagging you about extended warranty reminded you that "hey, your HEPA filter, cabin filter, ..." are recommended for a replacement.
I am hearing (without much fanfare) Tesla suddenly reenabled supercharging capabilities in salvage model 3 cars.
Would be interesting to get some confirmations from a wider field if anybody has salvage model3s with disabled supercharging.
Great news if true!
Now to the actual meat:
Infotainment was reworked compared to current units. The GPU is now on the same board, so no more GPU daughterboard. This makes the whole unit thinner, otherwise no changes there - same 256G NVMe and 16G RAM, same AMD CPU and GPU.
Looked into 2020.48 NNs (yay for holiday break free time!)
Interesting to see they are migrating right of way guessing from C++ as seen in the early FSD betas in October to NNs now.
The quantum leap is being implement bit by bit I guess.
Hm, just discovered that all the way back in 2023.7.x (beta v11.4.x) autopilot module would request satellite tiles from Tesla services and then feed them into a component named AiMap that then would generate maps for what's ahead in addition to what's nav feeding us
2023.32.1 adds a new chime option - when speed limit changes.
Some payment card integration with a warning that the fee might be higher than displayed in this case.
STEM charging.
Adds police vehicles as an explicit detection class for ui (We saw the assets for awhile)
seems this FSDBeta is very impatient about sitting in stopped traffic ;)
Even when there's nowhere to go, at least we can dry-steer to signal our intention to go somewhere, anywhere, just to avoid standing still ;)
Well, I've seen my share of stupid autopilot tricks people have been playing, but this is right there in Darwin award territory I suspect.
CanBus-injection to make (parts of) the car think it's in park to allow Theater use, while on autopilot?
losing some control ability?
2022.16.0.2
#TeslaReleaseNotes
:
- Media Player accounts (e.g. Spotify lgn) are now linked to your driver profile (Not in China)
- (some) Model 3/Y in NA: Blended brakes (Your vehicle can now automatically apply regular brakes for consistent deceleration when regenerative braking)
Good writeup.
And yes Tesla security came a long-long way from when I started in 2017 to today.
And they keep improving resulting in a nice puzzle that keeps getting better.
Rarely you see this level of care elsewhere (Though my experience is limited)
I would also like to say special thank you to people that help me satisfy my curiosity by various means including hardware donations, useful advice and such. I really appreciate all of you!
Looks like Tesla started to build cars with it but does not deliver them yet, I imagine the plan is to announce on March 1st that all cars off the line are already having it.
When yellow light turns on, you know what pedal you need to press, right? No, not THAT pedal.
I guess we can call this SIA: Sudden Intended Acceleration. Something nobody expects from you which makes it doubly dangerous.
This is a common theme in
#TeslaCrashFootage
(not on AP)
Interesting case. Detected turn signal in a car ahead of me, but it was not actually on.
Is it taking other stuff into account like "we are in a turn lane" I wonder. Or just "brain reading"?
On straight stretches no turn signal viz was observed from that same car.
So about that 100kWh model3 from the other day
I am sad to report it turned out to be not real. It did come form Tesla and it has a sticker with a higher weight than usual. We rooted it and peeked inside and nope, it's a regular 74kWh battery in the end which is a disappointment
PSA: Tesla changed from "only fix when customer complains" to doing a full wide stealthy recall for the 2020/2021 3/Y.
The A/C sensors are going bad so if you think you have any problems with A/C - you know what to do.
Make an apt or ask Tesla during your service appointment
familiar looking
#TeslaCrashFootage
, only this time it's not on autopilot by Tesla definition because the driver disengaged 5.9 seconds before impact (with a stalk).
No FCW, no AEB, autopilot remained available until brakes were pressed 0.6seconds before impact
2021.44.30.7
hm, it looks like 2021.4.15.8 added code to detect when driver vacates their seat?
I wonder if somebody could do a safe test to confirm this?
Also new safety limitations limitations:
Auto High Beam cannot be disabled while Autosteer or Traffic-Aware Cruise Control is active
When people say "my car took the same route as before and this time drove better" - the map updates like this help immensely and is probably why.
And overall it seem to be updating certain elements in near realtime. This also includes rough road patches and such.
A whopping 160x120 grid (so 1/8th of the native camera resolution) but hey those are actual 3D points in space. I don't know how to make a 3D video, so just visualizing "distance" as "brighter = closer" on the scale of 5 to 62 meters (the actual limit of the output):
Looks like Model Y heat pumps are seizing en-masse in Russia as well. This is how it looks like:
(in the video they just count start attempts), video credit to some Russian Tesla owners group
HW4:
A lot less improvement than many hoped for.
Still Samsung Exynos-IP based.
Bumped CPU cores from 12 to 20 (5 clusters of 4 cores each), maxing at 2.35GHz, idle at 1.37GHz
Number of TRIP cores increased from 2 to 3, 2.2GHz max freq
All x2 since there are two SoCs per board
Bad news Sunday. If you had infotainment computer in your Tesla replaced (model3 FSD upgrade, mcu2 retrofit, mcu1 emmc fix or any other fixe requiring computer swap) - consider all accounts you logged into from the car compromised and change pwds.
